Essential Statements
 Large-scale production – accompanied by massive technological change,
expanding international communication networks, and pro-growth
government policies – fueled the development of a “Gilded Age” marked by

Potential Essay Questions
1. Evaluate the extent to which the goals of Reconstruction (1865-1877)
regarding African-Americans were achieved by 1900. Be sure to address
both continuities as well as changes during this time period. (continuity and

2. Evaluate the extent to which women’s activism contributed to maintaining
continuity as well as fostering change in United States society from the
1840s through the 1880s. (continuity and change)
3. To what extent and in what ways did the conservation and preservation
movements in the late 19th century extend public control over U.S. natural
resources? Support your answer with specific and relevant historical
information. (causation)
4. To what extent and in what ways did Southern industrialists’ attempts to
create a “New South” alter the South’s economy and society? Support your

5. Both the Jacksonian Democrats during 1824-1840 and the Populists during
1890-1896 attacked and sought out special privilege in American life. The
Jacksonian Democrats attained power and succeeded; the Populists failed.
