enthusiast, and a true blue family man—these
are but some of the many facets of the life of
Erdie, as he has come to be known in the
industry.

headed the technical
staff that developed the
5 year development
program for the college.
While detailed to Malacañang, I headed
negotiations for a $6 Million loan from the
world bank. This lead to the development of
the college as the U.P. Los Baños. I was a
member of the U.P. Board of Regents for 8
years and participated in important decisions
such as the appointment of a UPLB chancellor
and a U.P. President after I retired from the
world bank, I was engaged in the tourism
industry, I still do part time work for ADB.
Vision for UPAA - Initiate projects to attain
development of U.P. as a premiere research and
extension institution in agriculture.

our country. The UP is an equalizer. It does
not recognize social or economic position. But
it should regain its preeminence as the center
of academic excellence as well as strengthen its

Outstanding Educator by the UP Medical
Alumni Society in 2010, Dr. EYAN continues
her work as technical consultant to the DOH
National Voluntary Blood Services Program,
which has taken her to all the regions in the
country giving lectures/ workshops on
transfusion medicine and blood safety, as far
as Papua New Guinea (WHO). She has also
served as World Health Organization consultant
in the Fiji School of Medicine. She still pursues
her passion for pathology and poetry.
Vision for UPAA - I envision the UPAA
playing a major role in reversing the
DIASPORA of our graduates by providing a
network of alumni in the provinces willing to
offer apprenticeships or assistant / associate
positions or simply JOBS to new doctors,
lawyers, etc.
I believe part of giving back or “paying
forward “ shall see brilliant UP alumni as
advocates and prime movers in conserving our
country ‘s natural resources and safeguarding
the environment.

U.P. Prep High School, and earned his Bachelor
of Arts in Political Science from U.P. in 1969.
While in school, he joined several organizations
and was active in extra-curricular activities.
He is currently a member of the board of
UPAA. He is a Past Chairman and Founding
Director of U.P. Barkada; Past President,
Rotary Club of Marikina North; Past District
Secretary, Rotary International District 3800;
Past Program Director, Knights of Columbus

instrument in the grant of P 1M from the DOT
to the UPAA for the grand alumni ball in

Mrs. Romero’s career has spanned information,
education and communication work with
international organizations, the government and
private sectors. She has extensive experience
in marketing communications, event
management, media relations and corporate
communications.
These skills and
specializations were acquired and honed during
her active involvement as development
communications and management consultant
and Manila-based correspondent of three
regional trade publications.
From 1984-1994, Ms. Romero wrote
articles on information technology (IT),
productivity and quality as a journalist here
and abroad. She covered the IT and business
beats, focusing on issues and concerns of the
local IT and telecommunications industry for
Asian Computerworld, IT Asia and PC Week
Asia. In 1985-1986, she was posted in
Singapore as News/Sub Editor of the Asian
Computerworld.
In 1991, Ms. Romero left government to
do freelance consulting. In 1992, she set up her
own management consulting/PR agency,
Strategic Organizational Services (Phils.) Inc.
(STRATOS), starting with four accounts.
STRATOS has since serviced about 200 firms
since it started 20 years ago.
University Involvement – Mrs. Romero
never cut her ties with her alma mater. She has
been involved with the image-building projects
and activities of the University of the
Philippines (UP), the UP Alumni Association
(UPAA), the UP College of Mass
Communication (CMC) and UP CMC Alumni
Association for the last 35 years, serving in
various capacities. She has been two-term
president of the UP CMC AA and is presently
serving in the Executive Board of UPAA, UP
CMCAA and UP CMC Foundation as chair of
their respective PR/Publicity Committees.

of providing invaluable, tangible contributions

“Jimmy” Yambao is a

(1965). He’s a former
Philippine Collegian
editor. Armed with MA
in diplomacy from the International Institute
of Public Administration in Paris, he took and
passed the Philippine Foreign Service Officers
examinations. He served as a career diplomatic
and consular officer in Paris, Washington DC,
Jeddah and Geneva. He was Ambassador first
to Laos, and then to Pakistan. He retired in
2010. The Department of English and
Comparative Literature honored him with an
Achievement Award at its 2011 centennial
celebration. He’s also a classical singer and stage
actor.

Mr. Somera graduated
from the College of Law
of the University of the
Philippines in 1985 and
also holds a degree in B.S.
Business Economics,
which he obtained in
1981, from the same
University. He joined the Carpio Villaraza &
Cruz Law Offices (now CVCLAW) in 1988
and is currently a Senior Partner and its
Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer.
His areas of expertise are intellectual property
law and litigation.
Mr. Somera was an accredited Mediator
for appellate cases having completed his
training at the Philippine Judicial Academy of
the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He has
held several positions in his chapters of the
Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), from
1993 to the present. He has held the positions
of Treasurer and First Vice-President of the
Philippine Bar Association (PBA). He was
Director of the National Committee on Legal
Aid of the IBP from 2003-2005. He was also a
former Director of the Intellectual Property
Foundation and an officer of the Licensing
Executives Society-Philippines (LES). He was
President and Chairman of the Intellectual
Property Association of the Philippines (IPAP)
from 2003-2007.
Mr. Somera has written several published
articles and has served as resource speaker on
intellectual property law in the Philippines and
international fora. He was also a member of the
Editorial Board of the World Patent and
Trademark News, an international journal on
intellectual property news and articles.
Mr. Somera is an active member of various
international intellectual property law
associations, foremost of which are the Asian
Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) where
he serves as a Vice-President and Council
Member, and the Asean Intellectual Property
Association (AIPA) where he serves as
Councilor. He is the representative of his Firm
in the International Trademark Association
(INTA) and the Association for the Protection
of Industrial Property (AIPPI).
Vision for UPAA - I would like to help UP
achieve the status of a well-known institute of
learning internationally (not just locally) and
ranked among the best universities worldwide.
This can be achieved by tapping the rich
resource of our alumni whose individual
achievements have made them leaders and key
players in their chosen fields of profession,
occupation and/or business. Much can be
learned from our alumni, and with their
assistance and active participation the perennial
problems faced by UP such as lack of faculty
and the need to upgrade and improve
educational and sports facilities, can be better
addressed. A stronger alumni can only result in
a stronger and better UP.
REYNALDO G. TAGUDANDO, MPA’06
Reynaldo G. Tagudando
hails from Tarlac and he
is the Regional Director
of the National Capital
Region, Department of
Public Works and
Highways. He finished
his Masters in Public
Administration at the National College of Public
Administration and Governance on April 2006
and currently holds the position of Vice
President of the NCPAG Alumni Association.
He also took up Executive Education Program
in “Innovations in Governance” at the Harvard
University Kennedy School of Government in
October 2007 as a fellowship grantee.
His fields of expertise are in planning,
design, construction, maintenance and quality
control, contract letting and financial and
personnel management. As a Regional Director
he supervises and inspects all administration
and technical phases of the DPWH activities in
Metro Manila.

Pedro L. dela Cruz, Jr.,
born January 1, 1961, in
Sorsogon, completed
primary and secondary
education
with
academic honors, both
in Legaspi City. A
graduate of B.S. Civil
Engineering, Class ’84, Diliman and passed the
Licensure Examination in 1985. He took MBA
in Ateneo Graduate School of Business in 1992.
While working, to complement his profession
and as executive of a real estate developer as a
civil engineer, he gained considerable experience
in construction, land development and project
management, highlighted by the premier
Malarayat Golf and Country Club, as a Project
Manager. He worked as Technical Consultant
in Manila International Airport Authority,
2007- 2010, and continues to be engaged with
several consultancy firms on special projects
and institutional development. He is also
currently involved in solid waste management
system. He is a member of several professional
as well as socio-civic organizations. He was
past chairman of U. P Barkada, 2009-2010.

Director of UPAA Board, I envision myself to
