April 2011
THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Students
As we approach mid-semester, North Park is as lively as can be. Students are busy writing mid term
assignments, and preparing for major tests. There is a substantial amount of academic pressure for all as the mid
term reports come on April 21st. In particular, we congratulate all of our Grade 10 students who completed the
Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on March 31st, and wish our senior students well as their mid term
marks are submitted to colleges and universities for admission consideration.
All students and parents are encouraged to visit our informative website at: northparkvikings.ca.
The site is being used to update information about school news and events that are important to students and
staff. The site is being used more and more by students to channel them in to school activities such as option
selections, class work, academic and career planning, class blogs, etc. We hope to continue making this site an
easy and functional "one click" entry to the school. Please see the web site for Summer School Information,
Student Web (tracking diploma status, current course selections for September 2011, attendance) Parent Web
(student attendance, parent information) and Making My Way (student planning / Guidance). Let us know if
there are other links you would like added to the site.
Finally, please be sure to scan the website for news on school activities, pictures and upcoming events. In
particular, we wish our DECA team well in Orlando, our IBT students in Washington, and encourage all of our
students to contribute to our fun filled Relay for Life as we hope to raise over $20,000 for cancer research.
Yours sincerely,
P. Geale
Principal

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND
TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
The IBT Admissions Committee has been busy in
February and March sorting through more than 600
applications to the IBT program for entry to North
Park in September. A committee of five
experienced IBT teachers carefully examined all
applications over a span of three days. We have
admitted nearly 180 students to the IBT program for
next year – enough for six full grade 9 homerooms.
We look forward to meeting our new group of IBT
students in September. For current IBT students,
May brings our Senior IBT Retreat. We will invite
grade 12 IBT students to an ‘off campus’ event for a
day to acknowledge their achievement in
completing four years of the IBT program, and to
hear talks given by prominent leaders in the local,
national, and international business community.
Finally, for all IBT students, portfolio evaluations
will take place from May 17 to May 20. This is an
important part of the IBT program requirements,
and more information will be provided in the near
future on our school website at northparkvikings.ca.
Exam Review 10:30 – 11:00 A.M.)
* Please note that final examinations are
compulsory in each course as prescribed by the
Ministry of Education. Students’ summer plans are
to be made outside of these dates as examinations
will not be rescheduled. Medical exemptions
should be supported by a medical certificate.
SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL
Our next meeting is Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 7:00
p.m. in the Library.
LITERACY
On March 31st, all grade 10 students and previously
eligible students wrote the Ontario Secondary
School Literacy Test. Results will be made public
at the end of the school year. If a student is
unsuccessful for a second time, it is strongly
recommended that they enroll in the Ontario
Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).
On March 8th, 80 students were involved in a
Readathon which promoted reading for pleasure.
The students enjoyed a guest speaker who
specialized in writing graphic novels and also

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES
CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION
Semester 2 students in co-op are now at the halfway
point in their placements. On May 13, they will be
displaying their career fair boards in the commons
area of the school for all staff and students to see.
Some of the placements our students have been
working in this semester include Canadian Armed
Forces, Canadian Tire, Brampton Golf Club, City of
Brampton, Canadian Rail, Future Shop, Level 2
Salon, Northwest Lexus, Chinguacousy Wellness
Centre, Greek Symposion, Boston Pizza, Montana's,
Rona and West Mark Truck.
Did you know that 2 co-operative education
credits can now be counted toward your 18
compulsory credits? If you would like more
information regarding the co-op program, you can
contact one of the co-op teachers (Mr. Moniz or
Mrs. Upenieks) at (905) 456-1906, ext. 419 or your
son/daughter's guidance counsellor.
PLAYSCHOOL
The Playschool has had a great start in semester
two. We are happy to welcome most of our little
ones from first semester back and have had a few
new friends join. Our new set of student-teachers
are working diligently, always demonstrating our
core values, Love, Respect and Responsibility.
They have taken ownership of the program and are
the reason for its great success.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
On May 20th, our vocal jazz ensemble Abstract will
be travelling to Toronto to compete in the Toronto
Festival of Music. After a silver medal finish at the
regional level, they are hoping for gold at this
national level competition. Best of luck to Mrs.
Johnston and the entire ensemble!
North Park’s Concert Band and Jazz Band will be
participating in the Simcoe County Arts Festival on
April 15 and the Canada’s Wonderland Music
Festival on May 26. Last year at these festivals our
concert and jazz bands earned some of their best
adjudications ever. We look forward to even more
successful performances.
In preparation for these festivals, we will be
working with clinician Colin Clarke for a full day of
intensive practice.
GRAD FORMAL
This year’s Grad Formal “Moonlight Masquerade”

able to pay their remaining balance or buy their
ticket in full. Exact cash and cheques (payable to
North Park S. S.) are accepted.
Graduating students are encouraged to attend this
alcohol and smoke-free event! The Prom
Committee has been hard at work planning this
great event. Please contact Mrs. Massi or Mrs.
Goncalves if you have any questions.

before losing a tough semi-final game 7 – 6 to
Cardinal Leger.
SCHOOLREACH

hosting the first tournament, we travelled on to

Many, many sharp and diligent students allowed us
to present two teams in the league, whose total final
Our Junior Mixed team finished the regular season
in second place, with only one loss all season. They
advance to the finals, but lost a hard-fought lowscoring game to Mayfield 4 – 2 and had to settle for
the silver medals. Congratulations on a successful
season to Devin Refling, Bethani Sullivan, Philip
Tobin, Tara Reid, Shawn Hardy and Andrew
