ECU has been named in the Times Higher Education (THE) 100 under 50 rankings for 2015.
2
Recognising the world’s 100 best universities
less than 50 years of age, the rankings are a
global showcase of a new breed of university.
They focus on performance indicators such as
teaching, research and international outlook,
and highlight universities that are developing
at an exceptional rate.
ECU is proud to be recognised for its research
productivity, research influence, quality of
teaching, industry innovation and international
focus. And we’re looking forward to building
on this success in 2016.
Why choose Business at ECU?
Business is different at ECU. At ECU’s School of Business, we provide you with up-to-date theoretical knowledge,
practical experience and important employability skills that can be used both locally and internationally. We offer you
a range of majors and courses to choose from, leading to a diverse choice of careers. So get set for a rewarding and
successful career when you graduate.
BUSINESS INTERNSHIP
At ECU, our Business students get the opportunity to apply
for business internship opportunities that comprise a minimum
of 16 weeks (600 hours) of full-time work experience in a
public, private or not-for-profit organisation. The unique
Internship program allows them to develop professional
networks; practice applying theory learned during their
degree, and develop skills and capabilities required to succeed
in their chosen profession. This real-world experience enables
students to graduate career-ready. Leading organisations
like Commonwealth Bank, Tourism Council of WA and the
City of Joondalup are just some of the places within which
ECU Business students completed internships in 2014.
INDUSTRY LINKS
Our courses have been developed in consultation with
industry, and are well regarded in the business world.
Our Accounting major, accredited by CPA Australia, Chartered
Accountants Australia and New Zealand and Institute of
Public Accountants, and our Human Resource Management
major, accredited by Australian Human Resources Institute
(AHRI) are just a few of our many popular areas of study.
We also offer you opportunities to get your career on track
with industry practice and work experience units.
FLEXIBILITY AND CHOICE
ECU’s Business courses are flexible, offering full-time,
part‑time and online study modes. Courses are available at
our campuses in Joondalup, Mount Lawley and Bunbury.
There are a variety of courses and majors to choose from,
leading to a wide choice of career options upon graduation.
Students can choose from popular conventional disciplines
like Accounting and Finance, to more contemporary ones
like Event Management and Planning. No matter what their
choice, students graduate with a range of employment skills
and experience that will help them hit the ground running.
“WITH AN ATAR OF 97.65,
I HAD MANY OPTIONS
BEFORE ME.”
I chose ECU because I liked how it emphasises the value of
practical knowledge, instead of just theory. Also, it had the best
atmosphere and campus facilities of the universities I attended for
open days. I’m only one and a half years into my degree and I have
already created a major financial model to complete a valuation of
Fortescue Metals Group (FMG). I’ve also had the opportunity to
meet many contacts from the financial sector within the mining
industry, including the CFO of FMG. Last semester I competed in
the CFA Research Challenge as part of a team for ECU, and we
came in 3rd – it was an invaluable learning experience.

ECU BUSINESS STUDENT, WESTPAC CEO
FOR THE DAY
ECU Business student Amy Joslyn had a unique experience
while working as a Bank Teller at Westpac during the holidays.
She was chosen out of hundreds of applicants across Australia
to become CEO of Westpac for a day. Amy is pursuing a
Business and Arts double degree that she feels, perfectly suits
her interests. “I will be able to further my career in Banking
through my Business degree, while the visual arts major gives
me the ability to utilise my creativity! The processes I’ve learnt
and knowledge I’ve gained at ECU have led me to have a
better understanding such that I can showcase my skills and
perform better at work.” As the Westpac CEO for the day,
Amy spent the day alongside then CEO Gail Kelly, undertaking
tasks such as meeting Westpac’s biggest customers and
attending meetings.
STUDENTS EXPERIENCE A DAY IN THE
LIFE OF A PLANNER
Planning students in the Practice of Planning unit recently
experienced ‘A Day in the Life of a Planner’ during a one‑day
industry placement. The aim of this placement was to bridge
the gap between theory and practice, providing students with
skills for the workplace.
The students spent time with professional planners in the
public and private sectors, learning about the day-to-day tasks
of the job, and receiving advice from experienced planners.
Besides getting a preview of what their future career might
be like, students were given the opportunity to make strong
connections with industry.
TOURISM STUDENTS JOURNEY
THROUGH SABAH
Tourism and Hospitality students from ECU embarked
on a ten-day journey through the land of Sabah to
acquire knowledge and experience on ecotourism.
The visit was led by Professor Ross Dowling in
conjunction with Mr Albert Teo, Managing Director
of Borneo Eco Tours and Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
In addition to several charity events and donation
ceremonies organised by the students, the group
had a great wildlife viewing experience on several
river cruises where they sighted many endangered
species. A highly emotional highlight of the tour
was the group’s attendance at ANZAC Day’s Dawn
Service at Sandakan War Memorial Park. The students
summarised the study tour as ‘an eye-opener’ and a
‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’.

ECU AT ENACTUS
BEIJING WORLD CUP
ECU Business student Kym Arnold recently got
the opportunity to represent ECU at the Enactus
(Entrepreneurs Action for Us) World Cup in Beijing.
As the incoming President for the ECU Enactus team
in 2014, Kym received a scholarship from Enactus
Australia so she could see how teams from around
the world compete at a global level. “It was a great
learning opportunity for me,” said Kym,
“I got to see how other Enactus teams from around
the world are creating and delivering worthwhile
community projects. I have learnt so much.”
At the three-day event, Kym was able to watch
presentations from teams representing the US,
Ireland, Malaysia and others, and networked with
leading industry figures and fellow students.

a confident public speaker during my time at ECU by
participating in an advanced public speaking course.
That changed the course of my life as I went from being
a very nervous speaker to hosting maritime lectures
aboard QM2 that have audiences of around 500
people.” Presented by the Customer Service Council
of Australia, the Customer Service Excellence Awards
– ‘Raising the Standards’ – encourages individuals and

EVENT MANAGEMENT STUDENTS COORDINATE
WORKSKILLS AUSTRALIA EXPO
Business students Hayley Knowles and Hanna Oeyre were
offered the amazing opportunity to coordinate the closing
ceremony of one of Perth’s largest skills expos held in
October 2014. The Event Management students were
invited to undertake the shared role of Event Coordinator
for the Closing Ceremony as part of their Industry Practice
unit. “What really excited me was the adrenaline rush in
the lead-up to curtain call,” said Hanna, a Business student
from Norway, “I drew extensively on my knowledge gained
in event management units. The satisfaction post event,
knowing it ran smoothly, was the highlight of my experience.”
The students were responsible for a variety of tasks including
the creative concept, staging requirements, logistics, volunteer
management and staging the event. Speaking on her
experience, Sport, Recreation and Event Management student
Hayley said, “Our experience helped us really understand what
it takes to create an exciting, creative and engaging ceremony.”

BUSINESS STUDENTS TOUR THE USA
ECU Business students embarked on an 18-day international
study tour to the USA last year. Venturing through Los Angeles,
Colorado, New York and San Francisco, the tour was designed
to explore major sporting stadiums (eg. Madison Square Garden
in NY and Angels Stadium in LA). Students also got to learn
about event management operations and college sport and
recreation programs and facilities at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Southern California (USC)
and the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO).
Students got to see first-hand how the Australian sport
delivery system compares to the USA. Tour Leader,
Dr Alicia Stanway gave a guest lecture on Australia’s sport
delivery model to UCLA staff and students. ECU students
engaged in presentations by leading American authorities on
sport and sport management. Students also had plenty of
opportunities to challenge their physical prowess including
a full-day hike through the Colorado Rocky Mountains and
challenging their limits on the High Ropes Course, as well as
recreational activities such as a Broadway show in New York
and an Alcatraz tour in San Francisco.

“I CHOSE BUSINESS AT ECU
BECAUSE OF ITS FLEXIBILITY AND
STRONG REPUTATION AS
A PRACTICAL UNIVERSITY.”
ECU was my preferred choice due to its flexible course
structure and strong reputation as a practical university.
I was unsure what field of business I wanted to work in so
I was looking for a degree that allowed me to explore my
options. ECU’s Bachelor of Business exposed me to a number
of different disciplines in my first year, giving me the time
to explore my options. I’m now the CFO at a leading global
resources company, BHP Billiton.

“ALL OF MY LECTURERS
WERE EASY TO GET
ALONG WITH AND
EXTREMELY HELPFUL.”
I chose ECU due to its flexibility with a range of campuses
and flexible study options and timetables, as well as the
greater focus on hands-on learning experience with the
Business Edge units. In fact these were the factors that led
to my decision to switch from UWA to ECU. My greatest
achievement so far has been completing a full-time study
load while also working full-time, and this definitely would not
have been possible without ECU’s flexibility and support. I am
now working as an Accountant at a highly reputable property
development firm, and am putting into practice many of the
skills learnt at uni.

“THE COMBINATION OF PRACTICAL
BUSINESS SKILLS AND ACADEMIC
KNOWLEDGE PUTS ME IN
A UNIQUE POSITION.”
I chose ECU for its practical approach and reputation. The ECU
graduates I have spoken to, all speak very highly of their experiences.
I have to say, my ECU experience has been fantastic. The lecturers
have been the highlight so far. Their knowledge is extensive and their
approachability made me feel comfortable asking for help.
The flexibility at ECU has been a really important factor in my success.
I have managed to attain High Distinctions in assessments, while
holding down a full-time job. The ability to combine the practical skills
which I learnt during an apprenticeship, and the academic skills learnt
at university, has put me in a unique position.

“BUSINESS AT ECU TAUGHT ME
HOW TO MANAGE MY TIME
AND ACHIEVE MORE.”
I was attracted to the Bachelor of Business by the practical nature
of the course. Academically, Business at ECU teaches you a range
of ‘real-world’ skills, like pitching yourself to clients and time
management. I found the time management skills invaluable.
At one time, I was studying full-time, working 32 hours a week,
applying to firms and participating in the Deloitte Dream Team!
I managed to hold down my job, achieved academic success and
came 4th in the Dream Team – all thanks to time management
and a lot of support and flexibility from the staff at ECU.

“I CHOSE ECU BECAUSE
IT HAS A GREAT COMMUNITY SPIRIT.”
ECU has a modern feel and youthful atmosphere which
I really like. Plus, it’s close to home, a major shopping centre
and classes are easy to find. The course material has been
excellent, providing both theoretical and workplace application
approaches. There are plenty of case studies and industry guest
speakers to learn from, and questions and discussions about
course material are encouraged. My best experiences at ECU so
far include the networking and friends I have made, the business
and personal development opportunities I have been given and
the social activities I have participated in, such as the indoor

“ECU IS GIVING ME THE
SUPPORT I NEED TO
SUCCEED IN BUSINESS.”
ECU came strongly recommended through family
and friends due to the one-on-one time the lecturers
and support staff offer. As a mature aged student,
I wanted to feel as though I could seek help and support
whenever I required it, and ECU gave me exactly that.
I entered ECU through the University Preparation
Course which gave me the support I needed to succeed.
I am now completing a Business course and could not be
happier with where my career is heading.

“I FOUND THE BUSINESS EDGE UNITS
TO BE HIGHLY BENEFICIAL.”
I have completed three of these units and with each, have been
able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. This has helped me
to work on my areas of weakness, as well as grow my confidence
particularly with public speaking and networking. The lecturers
here genuinely care about how you are progressing and I have
always been able to get help and guidance when needed.
There are so many opportunities to learn and grow. I am part of
ECU Enactus, a voluntary organisation, and earlier last year I was
sponsored by Enactus to attend the International Conference in
Beijing, China. It was an amazing experience, and I brought home
a wealth of information for our team which we have used to grow
and will help us to prepare for the upcoming National Conference.

“I’VE ALWAYS HAD AN
INTEREST IN MARKETING,
ADVERTISING AND PR. ”
Marketing, Advertising and PR work hand-in-hand in
the real world, so it made sense to unite them at uni too.
The combined degree at ECU allowed me to study all
three. We experienced the end-to-end process from PR
consultant, to journalist, to publishing in classes that mirrored
the real world. One of my units was held in an awesome
computer lab where we were plugged in to live blogs and
industry news – this was a great way to learn how to write a
timely and successful press release.

THAT IT WOULD LEAD TO ME BEING
A PART OF SOMETHING HISTORIC.”
My sister had attended ECU and seeing her fantastic experience, I decided to
enrol for the Sport, Recreation and Event Management course – that has been
one of my best decisions so far! The lecturers knew a lot about the industry and
had many contacts within it. In my last semester I got an industry prac placement
with the Fremantle Dockers Football Club in the Events Department. Due to
my positive work ethic I was offered (and accepted) employment on a casual
basis. When Fremantle made it to their first ever home preliminary final, it was
so exciting to be a part of it all! On the Thursday before the finals I was suddenly
asked to fly over to Melbourne to fill in for a permanent staff member – it was
such an honour to even be considered and a great feeling. Over in Melbourne
at the Grand Finals, I was in charge of managing security, caterers and audio
technicians. All the skills and theory I picked up in my years at ECU helped me play
a part running the biggest function the club had in many years – the Fremantle
Dockers first historic grand final. It was an amazing experience. I would definitely
recommend ECU to friends or family.
