TO FLY IN PEPPERTREE PARK
Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts (TACFA) in cooperation with 3-D Theatricals presents its 14th annual Broadway in the Park production, “Peter Pan.” Chaired
by TACFA Vice President Erin Kociela, and directed by T.J. Dawson, this summer series will be presented August 19 - August 23, 2014 in Peppertree Park in
Old Town Tustin. Come and bring your family and friends to enjoy the Darling family and their children, Wendy, Michael, and John as they explore the wonders
of Neverland and revel in the magic of Peter Pan, fairies, pixie dust, Indians, lost boys, pirates, and Captain Hook and the famous hungry crocodile. The real
treat will be to watch as characters fly across the stage to the enjoyment of our audience! So, come and relax in the Park on a warm summer evening with your
favorite chair or blanket. Arrive early (gates open at 6:00PM) there will be something for everyone: food, beverages, kids craft booth, and opportunity prizes.
The Black Marlin restaurant will be selling dinner items on-site as well as non-profits selling foods, desserts, and beverages and TACFA Bar selling wine and
beer. Tickets are $18 pre-sale for all ages (children under age 5 are free) and $20 at the Box Office. Group sale tickets (minimum of 25 or more) are available
on-line for $16. Pre-sale tickets are available at the following locations: Benjie’s, Chemer’s Art Gallery, Mrs. B Consignments Etc., Scooter’s Mailbox, Tustin
Parks & Recreation, the Tustin Senior Center, and at all Wednesday Concerts in the Park. Information is available on the TACFA website at www.tacfa.org.
T.J. DAWSON – AWESOME TALENTED DIRECTOR!
If you were amazed at what T.J. Dawson was able to create wearing a dress and high heels as Edna in last year’s production of “Hairspray,” just wait to see
what he can do with flying effects and pixie dust!
Given the amazing success of his young company, T.J. was the obvious choice to direct this year’s production of Peter Pan.
In the 4 years since T.J. started his company, 3-D Theatricals, he and his company received the most Ovation awards of any
theater for the 2012-13 season next to Center Theatre Group. He most recently received an Ovation nomination, as well as
a L.A. Drama Critics Circle nomination, for his direction of the critically acclaimed production of PARADE (winner of 4
Ovation awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Ensemble, and Best Musical).
Although flying actors in Peppertree Park will be a new venture, T.J. has plenty of experience dealing with the tricky
staging required to make Pater Pan come to life. In 2009, his company began with the critically-acclaimed Peter Pan at
the OC Pavilion in Santa Ana. 3-D Theatricals is a young and enthusiastic company and is quickly becoming one of the
leading places to see Broadway-caliber professional musicals in Southern California. They currently perform at the Plummer Theater in Fullerton and
also in Redondo Beach. 3-D Theatricals is a member of the prestigious National Alliance of Musical Theatre and LA Stage Alliance. T.J. works with a
knowledgeable and experienced team that has a reputation for bringing new life to established Broadway classics, and strives to inspire youth to explore
the arts. TACFA is thrilled to be working with him and his talented team!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
O
n behalf of the TACFA Board, we hope you enjoy our summer Spotlight. Our 22 member volunteer
board is dedicated to fulfilling our mission to develop, showcase and support the arts in the greater
Tustin area. We have completed these Fine Arts Programs to date: Student Art Invitational, Barbara
Benson Memorial Scholarships, Koncert for Kids, Art Masters, Access to Art and Viewpoints OC. Looking
ahead, mark your calendars for the Art Walk coming to Old Town October 18th!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Enderle Center and Tustin-Santa Ana Rotary for helping
support TACFA’s fine art programs this year. Enderle Center sponsored the Student Art Invitational and
Viewpoints OC and Tustin-Santa Ana Rotary gave us a grant for the Art Masters program. TACFA believes
participation in the arts is a critical element in a child’s development, encouraging creativity and communication
skills as well as engaging them actively in their education. We applaud them for recognizing the importance of our fine art programs in
the schools and for the opportunity for local amateur and professional artists to display their art. We are also so thankful for the support
from each of our donors which funds our programs that inspire and enrich our community, young and old.
We invite you to join us for our 14th annual Broadway in the Park, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Broadway premiere
of Peter Pan. We are going all out to bring you a new, enlarged stage, a new director, and for the first time ever, ZFX Flying Effects!!
Neverland awaits you. Don’t miss out on this special performance that will be a perfect evening to complete your summer.

TUSTIN AREA SENIORS AWARDED BARBARA BENSON FINE ART SCHOLARSHIPS
TACFA proudly names the seven Barbara Benson scholarship winners for 2014: Tori Cowdell,
Rachel De Fontes, Shanice Edwards, Emma Foss, Ernesto Mariscal, Samantha Reader,
and Luke Villegas. Samantha and Shanice are from Beckman; Emma, Tori, and Rachel attend
Foothill; Ernesto attends Hillview; and Luke attends Orange County School of the Arts. Each
receives a $2000 scholarship to further their fine art studies at the college level.
Tori’s vocal instructor describes her voice as incredible, with a huge range, from alto to soprano.
She learns music quickly, and enjoys song-writing and singing in different languages. After
she attends Brigham Young University Hawaii she plans to teach music to children around the
world.
Rachel can sing, dance, act, and direct. She is headed to NYU as a Theatre Arts major then
would like to work on Broadway. Her teacher describes her as “one of the most talented and focused students who displays an amazing amount
of maturity, honesty, compassion and focus in all of her projects.”
Shanice wants to major in theater at UC Riverside. She has the drive, self-determination, and a passion to pursue her dreams of becoming a
successful actor. With a theater degree, she is motivated to become a teacher who can help youth chase their dreams. Self-expression, creativity,
individuality, and imagination are traits that she learned from her mother.
Emma will compete this summer in the Miss California contest representing Tustin. Her talent will be painting to music! She uses a variety
of media to create life-like representations of faces and figures. She will attend Chapman University to study visual arts and neuroscience. She
would like to be a Fine Arts professor while also owning her own art gallery.
Ernesto’s artwork can be seen at Beswick Elementary, the Boys and Girls Club in Burbank, and on the tee shirts of a rock musician. At the Art
Institute of Orange County he will be learn 3D Art Animation, sketching, 2D and 3D graphics.
Samantha will attend Texas Christian University. She enjoys self-portraiture and experiments with levitation and varying angles by adding
small details that contribute to the overall unity of a photograph. She will pursue her goals of being a successful entrepreneur, running her own
photography studio or working with companies doing advertising and marketing.
Luke plans to earn his BA at the Musicians Institute, College of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles as a major in guitar studies and
performance. In ten years, Luke hopes to be making a living creating music with a large fan base.
TACFA GIFTS 28 TUSD STUDENTS CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
For the second year, the Tustin Public School Foundation is hosting The Young American National Tour Summer Camp at Tustin High School
August 5-9th. TACFA is providing 28 scholarships, one to a student from each of the Tustin schools selected by the school principal. The
instruction will cover vocal performance, choreography, dance, audition and microphone skills. Campers will participate in master workshops
and performance enrichment activities. This 5-day intensive day camp is available to incoming 3rd grade students to graduating seniors. The
camp’s finale will be a Celebration Show for the community featuring the campers performing alongside The Young Americans. Concert
show times are 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children. The Young America organization is the world’s
largest non-profit youth music organization dedicated to educating the importance and benefits of music in the schools. To register visit www.
youngamericans.org/summercamps.
North Tustin Vet Clinic Adds Sparkling Tradition to Broadway in the Park
How fitting it is that people who are passionate about taking care of our pets in this community are also passionate about how
they nurture their own employees. Just ask those who work at the North Tustin Veterinary Clinic how Dr. and Mrs. Kaliannan
pamper them at Broadway in the Park. First of all, they have been bringing their employees to the show each summer for 13
years and each time is more anticipated than the last.
Mrs. Kaliannan reserves at least three tables for all their staff for an evening at Broadway in
the Park each August. Not only do they buy reserved seating, they decorate the tables with a
theme and support the community further by buying food from a local restaurant as well as
participating in the opportunity drawing by giving every guest ten raffle tickets. “Our staff
looks forward to this event more than Christmas,” commented Arlene Kaliannan. “Seriously,
we want it to be special and everybody has so much fun.”
The Kaliannans not only pull out all the stops in making this a wonderfully joyful occasion
for their employees, but they are Major Sponsors of Broadway in the Park and have been since the beginning. This generosity, while
so appreciated, was the result of a request by a beloved former employee and longtime TACFA board member, Jo Ann Bollesen, now
deceased. North Tustin Veterinary Clinic and the Kaliannans are really a part of the TACFA family now in the way they have taken it
upon themselves to create such a fun experience as they participate so uniquely in Broadway in the Park.
We encourage you and your special group to reserve and decorate a table or two for a fun new tradition for your family and friends.
It adds to the ambiance and provides an unforgettable evening for all. If you would like to be one of our Sponsors, we encourage you
to visit our website at tacfa.org or contact Kathy Tarrant at kathytarrant@sbcglobal.net.
