OrganelleZ REMIX
by Ed Piva
(Chorus) In the cell, there’s organelles,
Those organelles, they’re in the cell.
Listen up closely to the story I tell,
I’m about kick a rap about organelles.
Like the farmer in the dell who gives orders from the brain,
The nucleus controls the cell inside its membrane.
It’s the largest organelle, transmits hereditary info,
Contained in thick protoplasm, there’s still more to know.
The protoplasm, rich in protein,
Called Nucleic Acid...what?
Maybe DNA rings a bell, these rod-shaped bundles,
Are called chromosomes, a fundamental,
Component, contain the genetic code,
For all living things, whether young or old.
An envelope, a boundary, or container,
The plasma membrane has a double layer,
Of fatty lipids, like a chemical sandwich,
That regulate flow and exchange of materials, which,
Travel inside and outside of the cell,
Like food, gases, and ions, for it to expel.
(Chorus) In the cell, there’s organelles,
Those organelles, they’re in the cell.
The cytoplasm, thick jelly-like suspension,
It’s semi-fluid composition in constant motion.
A mechanism, called cytoplasmic streaming,
That moves material through the cell, never ending.
In the cytoplasm it’s the mitochondria,
The power-plants of the cell, so what’s the dilia.
Sphere-shaped or oblong, provide the energy,
For a variety of cellular activities.
Particularly, production of ATP,
Used as a source of chemical energy.
That fuels the cell, and makes it function,
It’s singular version is mitochondrion.
The ribosomes carry protein here and there,
For cell growth, the nucleus, reproduction and repair.
These protein factories are so small agree,
Only with an electron microscope could you see.
Unique tube-like structures serve as a track,
ER carries proteins to the membrane and back.
Smooth and rough keep the ribosome connection,
Resemblin’ mac and cheese on your plate before digestion.
- INTERLUDE I need your attention please?
I need your attention please?
The golgi apparatus process and package proteins.
Like a garbage truck, maybe you know what I mean?
Macromolecules, packed up and sent out,
To the vesicles, cell surface, outside and throughout.
And there’s the vacuoles, another storage place,
Bubble -like structures, that take up space,
In the cell, filled with food, water, and waste materials,
Single membrane sacks found in plants and animals.
Breaker, breaker we got a 10-90 here,
Cut em’ off at the pass ain’t no time for fear.
Lysosomes patrol the plasm and clean around,
Packin’ digestive enzymes, to speed up the breakdown.
Of bacteria, viruses, and tired organelles,
In addition to pieces of food particles.
When cells need a clean up they’re the first to react.
Kill and digest materials...blaap!
Now my friends you know it well,
The fascinating story ‘bout living cells.
(Chorus) In the cell, there’s organelles,
Those organelles, they’re in the cell.
Understanding Life Systems - Cells
(The Ontario Curriculum, 2007 Science and Technology,
pages 140-142)
Overall Expectation
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic structure and function of
plant and animal cells and cell processes.
Specific Understanding
3.2 identify structures and organelles in cells, including the nucleus,
cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, vacuole, mitochondria, and
cytoplasm, and explain the basic function s of each (e.g. the nucleus
holds all the information needed to make every cell in the body)
