Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards (CGATS) Roster

SCOPE
The purpose of CGATS is to support and foster standards in the graphic arts industry. To do so, the Committee must first
identify areas where standards are needed. It will accomplish this task by identifying those standards presently in place
and those under development. This resulting voids will be areas where CGATS will investigate the need for standards
and establish technical committees should a need for standards development be identified. Standards development by
Technical Committees of CGATS will be submitted for adoption as American National Standards.
For the purpose of developing candidate American National Standards, CGATS’ scope includes the terminology, test
methods, procedures and specification relating to the field of graphic arts printing. This includes the preparation of
material for, and volume reproduction by, production printing processes which include, in particular, offset lithography,
letterpress, flexography, gravure, and screen printing.
CGATS will also encourage industry specification development by trade organization in the graphic arts industry to be
submitted for adoption as American National Standards and, where appropriate, to be submitted through ANSI as
candidate International Standards.

Subcommittee 3 – Metrology & Process Control
SCOPE
To develop standards for the measurement of optical characteristics of graphic arts images, materials and printing
process control (e.g., densitometry, colorimetry, process definition, characterization, analysis, control tools, etc.) . Review
national and international work in the area of densitometry, metrology and process control that may impact graphic arts,
and provide comments when appropriate. Function as an advisory task force to the USTAG to ISO TC130 in these
subject areas, and maintain interaction with other U.S. and international organizations in this area.

SCOPE
To identify needs relating to the handling of materials used in, or produced by, the printing process. Where needs are not
currently being met, SC5 will work through the ANSI consensus process to develop, or cooperate in the development of,
consensus standards. Wherever appropriate, approved national and international standards will be utilized.

SCOPE
To develop standards for the exchange of digital data for printing. These data can be either content data and/or noncontent data related to the content of the finished product. Where appropriate, this work will be done in cooperation with
ISO TC 130.

SCOPE
To develop a set of standards to be used for the electronic exchange of files using Adobe's Portable Document Format
(PDF). This work is being done in cooperation with ISO TC 130 WG 2/TF 2, and is resulting in a set of ANSI/ISO
standards.
This committee currently in stand-by mode with two nationally adopted standards (ISO 15930-7 and ISO 15930-8) and will
be reactivated when the ISO standards are revised.

SCOPE
To maintain IT8.6, Graphic technology – Prepress digital data exchange – Diecutting data (DDES3). First issued in 1991
and revised in 2002, this standard establishes a data exchange format to enable transfer of numerical control information
between diecutting systems and between diecutting systems and electronic prepress systems.

SCOPE
To develop standards relating to packaging, including workflow, color characterization, and relationships between
participants in the package design and production process.
Subcommittee 9 - Working Group 1 – Electronic Design Workflow For Packaging
SCOPE
To develop standard industry practices that encompass the entire packaging workflow, regardless of printing process.
This includes the identification of a model, or reference, workflow for the package development process, from the
identification of a project through preparation of an approved production file. Although the work defines the set of
information that needs to be addressed in a workflow, it allows for variations based on individual needs, and is intended to
be used as a reference in the creation of workflow procedures for specific organizations or products.

SCOPE
To focus on the development of a procedure to characterize package printing of standard and non-standard process
colors, and is attempting to define reference conditions applicable to ranges of package printing. This includes the
development of standardized color targets, as well as other tools and guidelines.
