History
S Chandra founded Zee Telefilms Ltd (Zee)
in 1992 as a content supplier for Zee TV, a Hindi
satellite channel. In 1995, Zee co-founded
Siticable, a cable MSO, along with News Corp
and subsequently in 2000 it bought News Corp’s
stake in Siticable. The company launched Zee
TV, UK and Zee TV, US in 1998 and Internet
Over Cable in 2000. In 2001, Zee formed
a JV with Turner International (India) and
acquired controlling stakes in ETC Networks
Ltd and Padmalaya Telefilms Ltd (Padmalaya).
In 2003, it tied up with Rajshri Pictures Pvt Ltd
to distribute Hindi and regional language films.
Operations
Zee is a fully integrated media company
with a presence in content creation, broadcasting,
cable distribution, education and film production
& distribution. Besides its flagship channel
Zee TV in Hindi, the company has regional
channels under the umbrella brand Alpha. Zee’s
other channels include Zee Cinema, Zee Studio,
Zee News, Zee Music and Zee English. Zee’s
channels reach 300 mn viewers in 120 countries.
In FY05, Zee’s advertising and subscriptions
revenue rose 5% and 8%, contributing 42% and
48% to total operating revenue, respectively.
Revenue from the cable distribution business
and film production & distribution declined
17% and 267% respectively. Its new channel
launches included Zee Telugu, Zee Business and
Zee Sports. Zee extended its South East Asian
reach to Hong Kong, Thailand, Philippines,
Indonesia and Japan. In FY05, Zee sold its
entire 64% holding in Padmalaya.
The Year in Review
For the year to Mar 31, 2005, total income
increased to Rs 6.9 bn, up 21.3% over the
previous year’s figure. Net profit increased
48.1% to Rs 1.6 bn.
As per unaudited results for the nine months
ended Dec 31, 2005, the company recorded
an income of Rs 6.2 bn and a net profit of
Rs 829 mn as compared with an income of
Rs 5.6 bn and a net profit of Rs 1.2 bn in the
corresponding period previous year.
