Students can choose from 25 GCSE subjects and 34 A-level subjects. Each student can be taught a programme which is best suited to his or her needs and ambitions. Additionally, the study skills sessions and tutorial system provide a sound basis for success. Many students like to add business studies with economics to their choice of core subjects. The sciences are usually taken as combined science if the student is not seeking to take science at A-level. Other optional subjects are English literature, history, geography, business studies, information computer technology (ICT), art & design, music, drama and religious studies. Language options: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Some students with strong academic credentials take more but we advise against this as it is unnecessary for entrance into a ‘top tier’ university. If the student is from overseas and has not achieved a high grade in GCSE English Language, the universities will require a high IELTS mark, usually a 6.5 across all modules or higher for medicine and law. PATHWAY PRE-SESSIONALS HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMMES INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAMME Designed to facilitate entry into day or boarding schools for UK or international students, the programmes can be adapted to suit the needs of individual students. Intensive EAL, study skills, academic vocabulary and a deeper understanding of subjects, all help prepare for entrance exams or develop the skills and understanding needed to successfully join a traditional UK school. Through UKVI school visa partnerships, non-European students can study at LISC on the same CAS as the main school GCSE or A-level programme. LISC’s fast track GCSE/IGCSE programme forms an excellent preparation for an A-level entry with the ability to take six subjects or more. Created for those international students who wish to attend a UK college for one or two terms before returning to their own school. These programmes provide an opportunity to improve language and subject knowledge, acquire new study skills and have the cultural and academic experience of a lifetime. Detailed monthly reports and a completion certificate based on regular assessment are provided. It is an excellent way to sample the UK education system. General or academic English is taught at any time of the year as part of an academic course, a pathway pre-sessional programme or purely as an English language improvement course. Integrated study skills are vital for academic success. As part of our programme we offer trips to surrounding attractions and all the cultural facilities in London. STUDY SKILLS SESSIONS As educators in independent study skills and knowledge application techniques, we aim to provide all our students with vital life skills. We strive to make sure our students perfect revision and exam techniques, organisational and presentational skills as well as learn subject specific vocabulary and skills and a more applied approach to sciences. One of the many aspects that makes LISC so successful is student profiling, monitoring and mentoring which together raise performance to a level exceeding expectations, as recognised by ISI (Independent School Inspectorate) during the last three inspections. This enables students to achieve their potential and also gain access to top schools or universities. They have taught in independent or state schools for many years, successfully preparing students for their GCSE, A-level and IB examinations or university entry. Our English language teachers hold current TEFL qualifications such as CELTA, DELTA or RSA certificates, and some also have a PGCE qualification. They are carefully selected to suit individual needs and expectations. BOARDING WITH A HOST FAMILY INDEPENDENT RESIDENTIAL STAY Full board homestay not only provides a home from home environment but it also enables students to benefit from continuous exposure to the English language whilst becoming familiar with English culture, traditions and way of life. This includes three meals a day. Students have their own room with study facilities and the support of their host. All homestay hosts are carefully chosen, specially trained, and meet our rigorous selection criteria. This option is for long-term students who wish to experience university style student residence and prefer to be accommodated on a self-catering basis (no meals included). Sport and the arts promote academic learning, build self-esteem and develop team work. We offer a range of sports, arts and cultural activities. For an additional fee, students can receive coaching from professionally accredited instructors. Students coming to LISC with a high level of specialism, have a chance to continue their professional training whilst studying with us. There are many local facilities near LISC so students have a wide choice of activities which they can access. Three times in a row LISC has been awarded ‘exceeding expectations,’ the highest possible outcome overall. LISC is a registered Tier 4 sponsor with UKVI. We are accredited by the British Council. Their quality assurance scheme for schools, colleges, and universities gives an assurance of quality to international students. English UK is the national association of accredited English Language centres, and the world’s leading language teaching association. As a registered examination centre, LISC is regularly inspected by JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) and has been commended for the way the centre is run. William, 17 came with no English; did one year intensive English, then one year GCSE, then one year A-level – joined Essex University after three years of study at LISC. Wendy Natural Sciences, Christ College, Cambridge University Viktoria, 16 joined LISC for 3 months of exam preparation for boarding school entry – received offers (including a scholarship) from Rugby, Charterhouse, Lancing, Ardingly, and Brighton College. We want every student to optimise his or her potential. We look at school reports, interview in person or via Skype and conduct a basic assessment to determine the best possible support. This enables us to tailor-make programmes to suit the individual needs of every student. As an independent tutorial college we can offer flexibility that many traditional UK schools cannot offer. We welcome students who flourish in a smaller environment. It particularly suits high achievers who wish to secure places at top tier universities. For students whose English levels or subject knowledge is not strong enough to join a GCSE or A-level, we recommend a tailored pre-sessional course. ENTRY CRITERIA We are happy to accept both boys and girls from the UK or any other part of the world, between ages 9 to 19. International students will require a minimum equivalent of IELTS score of 4.0-4.5 for GCSE/IGCSE and 5.0 – 5.5 for A-level, otherwise they will struggle to participate in class. Students are expected to have a higher level of English for fast track options. Students complete a LISC written English assessment and interview via Skype. For GCSE and A-level students will be required to take a subject assessment and provide copies of current school reports.’ If necessary, we will recommend that a student takes a pre-sessional programme in English only or in conjunction with academic subjects. Direct trains from London Waterloo only take 17 minutes but there are also trains which collect passengers from stations at Clapham Junction and Wimbledon. From the south, M25 trains going to London A4 from Guildford, Woking, Basingstoke and Portsmouth M3 also stop at Surbiton. It will take about 15 minutes to walk from Surbiton station but you can take a bus if you prefer (281, 406, 418). There is also a good taxi service from the station.
