LISC Independent Tutorial College
A WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL
‘The college exceeds expectations.’
ISI Report 2015
LISC Independent Tutorial College, established in 1998, provides quality education through
individually tailored academic and language programmes for both UK and international students. At LISC, we strive to create a nurturing
environment which inspires students and gives
them the enthusiasm to achieve their personal
best. All our students are encouraged to optimise
their potential.
Our aim is to respond to the needs of every
student. We set out to offer a wide choice
of subjects at GCSE and A-level. Our English
language programme is intensive and can be
combined with a full academic programme.
We believe that small groups, with a maximum
of five students per subject class, provide the
best learning environment. Tutors can fully
engage with students and provide the necessary
encouragement and support whilst building
confidence and taking full account of student
ability.
Our unique study skills programme and individual
student profiling play a significant role in assisting
students to achieve excellent progress and
optimum results. Learning to apply knowledge,
organise studies and develop exam techniques
are all crucial skills which help equip students
very well for university and beyond.

Students from both the UK and other parts of the
world enjoy the warm and family like community
which LISC has established, where everyone feels
at home.
With heartfelt commitment, we look forward to
welcoming you to LISC.

UK EDUCATION SYSTEM and LISC
LISC prepares each student to fulfil their
potential by offering tailored education
programmes. Students can choose from
25 GCSE subjects and 34 A-level subjects.
Each student can be taught a programme
which is best suited to his or her needs
and ambitions. Additionally, the study skills
sessions and tutorial system provide a
sound basis for success.
For overseas students, LISC provides a very
effective English as an Additional Language

achieve their personal best. Experience
shows that this approach helps students
across the academic spectrum, from those
wishing to retake exams to high-achievers
aiming for top grades in GCSE or A-level.
Class sizes are small with a maximum of
five students for academic programmes.
This enables our experienced tutors to
engage with students and help them
LISC provides a wide range of short
and long term courses and an excellent
platform for entry to top tier universities.
At LISC we offer an option of a two year or fast-track course over 6 to 24 months at GCSE, IGCSE and
A-level. We also offer IB preparation programmes. For those who are either too young or whose English
level or subject knowledge is not yet high enough to start an A-level programme, we recommend presessional courses to make sure students are at the correct level to attain the best possible results.

fast track programme: GCSE/IGCSE/A level
two year programme: GCSE/IGCSE/A level
An excellent way of gaining desirable academic qualifications; highly
successful courses are carefully designed for students who:
• wish to enter a UK university
• are academically strong and able to progress quickly
• want to re-sit a year to improve their grades
• are ready for intensive work covering a two year syllabus
in three terms
This traditional UK timeframe course enables students to
optimise their academic potential within a very personal teaching
environment. Students are able to develop a passion for each
subject of their choice and with intensive teacher support, stay
focused and achieve top grades. This is ideal for students who wish
to thrive academically, particularly if they are planning to apply for
medicine, law, engineering or other selective university courses.
available subjects: IGCSE/GCSE
Students can choose which subjects they
study at GCSE but they should be aware
that if they narrow their choice at this level
by omitting a subject, it may affect their
A-level options.
‘LISC has helped me understand what
I can really achieve when I apply
myself. I am delighted with my new
grades as now I can go to my first
choice university. Thank you for all
your amazing support’.

The core subjects of the UK education
system are English language, maths,
chemistry, physics and biology. Many
students like to add business studies with
economics to their choice of core subjects.
The sciences are usually taken as combined
science if the student is not seeking to take
science at A-level.
Other optional subjects are English
literature, history, geography, business
studies, information computer technology
(ICT), art & design, music, drama and
religious studies.
Language options: Arabic, Chinese, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish,
Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

A-LEVEL options
UK universities usually require three good grades at
A-level, although some students like to take four subjects.
Some students with strong academic credentials take
more but we advise against this as it is unnecessary for
entrance into a ‘top tier’ university.
If the student is from overseas and has not achieved a
high grade in GCSE English Language, the universities will
require a high IELTS mark, usually a 6.5 across all modules
or higher for medicine and law.
The following subjects are available at A-level:
• art & design
• drama
• biology
• business studies
• chemistry
• economics

‘The college exceeds expectations. At the previous inspection in 2013 the college was found to exceed
expectations and the quality of education as judged at that time has been maintained.’ ISI Report 2015
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
At LISC we believe in using the best possible resources to
achieve optimum results. We place a great emphasis on building
confidence in our students by coaching them to accomplish the
art of learning; information recall, knowledge application and
exam success. Regular assessments and reporting, attendance
monitoring and monthly progress review meetings ensure that

respect, responsibility, healthy diet and exercise.
CROSS-CURRICULAR PROJECTS
All long-term academic students are set bi-weekly projects to apply
what they have learnt and extend their knowledge beyond the
subject classroom. This approach promotes the development of
genuine interests and passion.
PROFILING
UCAS
Student profiling allows us to assess individual abilities; it identifies
specific strengths and weaknesses in order to customise the
teaching approach and maximise each student’s potential. Every
two weeks students take exam style tests. The LISC approach
helps students engage with their learning experience and grow in
confidence which contributes to them achieving optimum results.
There is considerable competition for places at top tier universities.
At LISC we support students as much as we can. We guide them
through the university selection and application process. We set
high yet realistic targets and provide interview training to help
make this important step in every student’s life as smooth as
possible.
STUDY SKILLS SESSIONS
As educators in independent study skills and knowledge application
techniques, we aim to provide all our students with vital life skills.
We strive to make sure our students perfect revision and exam
techniques, organisational and presentational skills as well as learn
subject specific vocabulary and skills and a more applied approach
to sciences.
PERSONAL TUTOR SYSTEM
In addition to attending regular individual meetings, each student
participates in weekly tutorials. Small groups provide an excellent
opportunity for tutors to monitor progress, offer ongoing support,

RESULTS

‘Examination results are consistently good.’
ISI Report 2015
LISC is non-selective and, along with many schools and colleges, has opted out of league tables. We believe that the
most important aspect of any educational establishment is the effectiveness of its teaching which is reflected in the
progress achieved by each student.
One of the many aspects that makes
LISC so successful is student profiling,
monitoring and mentoring which together
raise performance to a level exceeding
expectations, as recognised by ISI
(Independent School Inspectorate) during
the last three inspections. This enables
students to achieve their potential and also
gain access to top schools or universities.

We believe that the achievements of our
one year GCSE and A-level students are

ADMISSION INTO LISC
... for motivated and ambitious students ...
’The high quality premises are spacious and maintained to an excellent standard ...’
ISI Report 2015
LISC is a non-selective independent tutorial college. We want every student to optimise his or her potential. We look
at school reports, interview in person or via Skype and conduct a basic assessment to determine the best possible
support. This enables us to tailor-make programmes to suit the individual needs of every student.
As an independent tutorial college we can
offer flexibility that many traditional UK
schools cannot offer. We welcome students
who flourish in a smaller environment. It
particularly suits high achievers who wish
to secure places at top tier universities. For
students whose English levels or subject
knowledge is not strong enough to join a
GCSE or A-level, we recommend a tailored
pre-sessional course.
ENTRY CRITERIA
We are happy to accept both boys and
girls from the UK or any other part of the
world, between ages 9 to 19. International
students will require a minimum equivalent
of IELTS score of 4.0-4.5 for GCSE/IGCSE
and 5.0 – 5.5 for A-level, otherwise they will
struggle to participate in class. Students are
expected to have a higher level of English
for fast track options.
Students complete a LISC written English
assessment and interview via Skype. For
GCSE and A-level students will be required
to take a subject assessment and provide
copies of current school reports.’
If necessary, we will recommend that a
student takes a pre-sessional programme
in English only or in conjunction with
academic subjects.
ENTRY TIMES
Our courses are set as weekly or termly
units with a Monday start. If accommodation is needed, this is also
calculated on a weekly basis from Sunday
to Saturday.
