(wvu, not www). Access to the website is required to complete homework and gateways for this course.

Lab Website: Introduction to Calculus Labs, Darrah, Fuller, Goodykoontz, and Squire. Students must purchase access to the website http://webcom6.grtxle.com/introcalculus containing these labs.

Technology: This course will rely on the use of a graphing utility for problem solving, visualizing, and exploration. A calculator is recommended for use in this class. Suggested graphing calculators include the TI-

83, TI-84, or TI-86. Suggested scientific calculators include the TI-36X PRO. You are not required to buy a graphing calculator. Free online graphing utilities are available at the website: http://math.wvu.edu/150/graphers.html

.

Evaluation: Multiple forms of assessment will be used to measure your understanding of the concepts, skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities. The distribution of these assessments is:

The standard 90-80-70-60 percentage scale will be used to determine letter grades.

Quizzes: Your instructor will give frequent quizzes during lecture classes. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. They are designed partially as a way to collect an attendance grade. Because of this, they may be made up under no circumstances .

Homework (MyLabsPlus): Online homework assignments will be assigned for nearly every lecture day.

These assignments will be administered through MyLabsPlus, http://wvu.mylabsplus.com

(wvu, not www), and are to be done outside of class time from any computer connected to the web compatible with

MyLabsPlus. Normally, homework assignments for the week will open Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM. They will typically be due the next Tuesday at 8:00 AM. There will occasionally be different open times and/or due dates, and those will be announced in class.

HOMEWORK HELP SESSIONS: Every Monday from 3:30-5:30 in Armstrong 215 , a Math 150 instructor will be available for assistance with homework.

Laboratory Exercises: Math 150 will meet in the IML computer lab in Armstrong 215 on Wednesdays. On most Wednesdays, the class will work in groups on a series of online laboratories that can be found at http://webcom6.grtxle.com/introcalculus . These focus on applied topics related to the majors requiring this course. The labs are designed so that all students can become actively engaged to learn how to discover mathematics. You must purchase access to this site as part of the requirements for this course.

Gateway Skill Assessments: Two gateway skill assessments will be given during the semester. These assessments will consist of skill exercises on differentiation and integration which are essential skills in a calculus course. Calculators will NOT be permitted on gateway skill assessments. A MINIMUM

SCORE OF 80% ON EACH GATEWAY IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A PASSING

GRADE IN THE COURSE.

Students will be guaranteed one attempt on the gateway given according to the schedule. Students will be allowed one (optional) additional attempt at a time outside of class (specific time will be announced in class). The higher of these two scores will count toward the overall grade. In some circumstances, students may be allowed additional attempts in order to satisfy the 80% passing requirement, but attempts after the first announced retake may not count toward the overall grade in the course.

Exams: Three major exams will also be given in Armstrong 215 during lab time on Wednesdays, according to the course schedule. Exams will be completed and submitted on the computers in this lab. Only one attempt will be given for exams. You will need to present your WVU ID on exam days and keep it out during the test. NO ID, NO TEST!

Exam material will be based on lecture notes, lab activities, online homework material, and exam reviews.

Final Exam: The final exam will be given on Wednesday, December 18. Students must sign up for an exam time online (instructions will be given in class). The final exam will be comprehensive and will be worth 25% of the final grade. NO EARLY FINAL EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Missed Exams : If an exam is missed for a reason not sanctioned by the university, then the student must contact the instructor prior to, or (in very extreme circumstances) as soon as possible after, the missed exam.

For a valid excuse, the final exam percentage will be used to replace the missed exam. The final exam percentage may only be used to replace one exam.

Missing more than one exam will result in a score of zero for exams after the first missed exam. No exceptions will be made to this policy.

Students with valid university sanctioned event excuses for missing an exam will be given the regularly scheduled exam prior to the missed exam. Otherwise the final exam percentage will be used.

EXTRA HELP: Many students who have failed or dropped this course in the past could have succeeded if they would have sought extra help. Instructors of this course highly encourage all students to seek some form of extra help at the first sign of adversity. You can seek extra help by:

 Attending your instructor’s office hours for individual one-on-one help from your instructor.

Attending the Monday night Homework Help Session in Armstrong 215.

Going to the Math Learning Center (Armstrong 301) and work on your homework there so if you get stuck, you have someone to ask and get you over the roadblock.

Hiring a tutor for private instruction (many math majors, math education majors, and IML computer lab mentors provide tutoring for about $20/hr).

Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism, cheating, dishonesty, forgery, misrepresentation, fraud, et al., fall into this category. They will not be tolerated and are taken seriously. Please see http://www.arc.wvu.edu/admissions/integrity.html
