Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, UNIMAS COURSE TITLE MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY (Bioteknologi Perubatan) COURSE CODE STB3052 CREDIT 2 PREREQUISITE/S N/A SYNOPSIS This is a multi- and interdisciplinary course that encompasses subjects ranging from essential medical genetics, cancer genetics, and gene therapy to DNA typing and fingerprinting. Divided into 5 broad learning units, students will be taught on a comprehensive learning package that commences with introductory subjects to molecular and cellular medicine, followed by the study of Molecular Parasitology and Cancer Genetics, and concluding with discussion on application in Biomedicine and Forensic DNA technology. The general aim of this course is to produce students competent in the body of knowledge that integrates molecular and cellular biology with health and medical sciences. As biotechnological approaches are becoming part of the prognostic and therapeutic regimes for diseases, it is therefore necessary to have a course like Biomedical Biotechnology that expose students to essential information on the utilization of multi-and interdisciplinary strategies to solve health, medical, and forensic problems. ) LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, students will be able to: o Define all the technical terminology pertaining to biomedical sciences and the various components of biomedical sciences. (C1) o Explain the functions of biomolecules in the normal and abnormal activities of human. (C2) o Explain forensic DNA technology and its applications. (C2) o Analyze the relationship between biotechnological approaches and biomedical sciences. (C4, CT) o Apply biomedical biotechnological approaches in medical and forensic studies.
