NAGAR BAZAAR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Residents left out in NPR survey struggle for Aadhar enrolment Sir, Thank you for publishing our association’s letter last week inviting other residents’ associations to join hands in consolidating and organizing Aadhar camps within the colonies as proposed by Directorate of Census. We received an overwhelming response from a number of residents and associations in the neighbourhood. However on consolidation, we found that many of the residents were missed out during the population census carried out in 2010 and many were even unaware of such an exercise. Since enrollment / registration of biometric data cannot be done without the census slip, we have told those residents to get in touch with their respective zonal offices of the Chennai Corporation, where they have go through the procedure to get themselves included in the National Population Register. In the case of those who have the Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority, it has to be relinked to the NPR scheme. The interaction with the residents confirmed that the Census Department has not carried out the exercise of enumeration in the year 2010 in a systematic way. If it had done it properly, it is not possible that so many residents would not have been left out of the survey when many of them have been living in the same residence for a number of years. As a result of the blunders committed by the officials, residents are now forced to run from pillar to post to get them enrolled. We have allayed the fears of the residents who are yet to get enrolled under the NPR scheme that they will not be denied of the LPG subsidy, as the Census Department is yet to cover a vast ground in Tamilnadu. We must mention that since the officials themselves are unaware of the nitty-gritty of the scheme, they were of no help to the residents. Confusion, therefore reigned supreme wherever the camps were held. – V. S. Jayaraman, Secretary, Motilal Street Residents’ Welfare Association, Old No. 31, New No. 57, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Nana Street stinks Sir – We, the residents of Nana Street located near Panagal Park are suffering from rainwater stagnation in our street, apart from dumping of garbage and silt removed from stormwater drains in other areas by Chennai Corporation workers. September 15 deadline also passes without hawkers’ complex opening By Our Staff Reporter Though Chennai Corporation extended the August 15 deadline to September 15 for the opening of ‘Chennai Corporation Pavement Vendors Shopping Complex’ on Thyagaraya Road, T. Nagar, many of the roadside vendors have still not occupied their allotted slots. Corporation officials said that they delayed the opening following requests from a number of hawkers who sought more time to complete interior work before shifting their wares. But the hawkers told Mambalam Times that the work is still incomplete and may take a month more. The complex, built at a cost of Rs. 4.3 crores, has remained vacant despite the Supreme Court lifting a stay in a case filed by the vendors. The civic body has also planned to make Pondy Bazaar a vehicle-free zone to reduce traffic congestion and pollution levels. Nearly 650 pavement hawkers of Pondy Bazaar, South Usman Road, Sivaprakasam Salai and Panagal Park have been allotted shops in the complex which was constructed three years ago.
