will go to the “Wish List” at Boston Hospital.
I would also like to thank our retiring Recorder, Joel Weinstein, for his hard work
and guidance this year. I experienced
some troubling days in 2014, mostly related to the Maple Sugar Bowl, and his expert opinion gained from years of experience made getting through those days just
a little bit easier.

Holiday Greetings to
all Nobles and Ladies!
The Fez-tival of Trees began November
21 and went through November 30.
Thank you to everyone who worked long
hours to make this event a success.
I am told that the Bektash Christmas Party on December 6 was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, Lady Melanie and I came
down with the flu and could not attend. I
would like to thank Illustrious Bill Hebert
and Lady Sharon for hosting this event.

Thoughts from
the Potentate Elect
First I would like to thank you for elec ng me as your Potentate for 2015. Lady
Connie and I are so looking forward to the upcoming year. We have a lot of fun
things planned, star ng with the Installa on of Officers and the Ceremonial for
new members of which we should have at least 10. This is a great start for the
year Nobles, however we need more members. This year every Noble that
brings in one new member will get the Temple part ($55) of their $75 dues remi ed. It would be great if we could show posi ve growth. So, Nobles get out
to your Blue Lodges and find those Shriners. Also, talk up masonry to your
friends, you never know where you might find a Mason who can become a
Shriner.
Please come to the Installa on weekend, you won't be disappointed. Friday
night will be a Tex-Mex theme in keeping with the Imperial Session in Houston,
Texas. Saturday will be a busy day, with the Ceremonial and First Sec on in the
morning, Installa on of Officers in the a ernoon, with a banquet and dancing
un l 11:00pm. The hospitality room will be open un l the wee hours. For those
staying Saturday night there will be a goodbye breakfast on Sunday.
I will be doing something this year in regard to the installa on of unit and club
officers. I will personally be visi ng each unit and club at their mee ng to install
the officers. A le er will be sent to each club and unit in the near future.
One final thought, every Noble should remember their Masonic and Shrine
vows, and treat all brothers equally and with respect. I will close with a quote
from Mark Twain, "Stay away from people who try to beli le your ambi ons.
Small people do that, but really good people make you feel that you can bring
your plans to frui on. It is important with whom you regularly associate. Hang
out with those friends who are like minded and who also have purpose filled
lives. Similarly, be that kind of person yourself." Sam Clemens was a Mason perhaps these thoughts were from his Masonic teaching.

RECORDER’S CORNER
Congratulation to Richard Quindley for being
elected Potentate and to the elected and appointed Divan of the Bektash Shriners for 2015.
Lady Jean and I have had an enjoyable and satisfying experience in the last five years as your Recorder. We hope
that you will instill the same confidence and support in
2015 towards our new Recorder elect Ill. Guild “Bushie”
Hill, PP and Lady Judy. Thanks to all for your support and
friendship, and most of all for your dedication to Bektash.
We still have an adequate supply of 2015 Cash Calendars
on hand in the office. Please help us sell out by buying
them for yourself, your family and friends. Remember the
drawings are a daily event 365 days a year. So you can win
even if you purchase one after the first of the year. You can
win more than once. After each drawing the winning number goes back in. That's right! "Each Calendar lasts all
year." They will be on sale during 2015 until all 2500 are
sold. We want to thank all those that have sold Cash Calendars. Many have sold over 100 which is fantastic.
At the "Fez"tival of Trees Ill. Jack Murray, PP sold over
250. Along with Jack, Mark Simard helped selling over 50.
Thanks to them both. Please do not forget that this is a major fund raiser for Bektash. If every member either bought
or sold one we would sell out quickly. Thanks again for all
your support.

Thank you for all that you do for Bektash but most of all
for just being Shriners. I hope that everyone had a Merry

Northeast Shrine Association
Fall Field Days Coming to Kora in 2015
Kora Shrine is hosting the Northeast Fall Field Days in 2015. The dates are September
17 to 20, 2015 and it will be held in Lewiston, Maine. This event is one of the highlights of the year for Shriners and it promises to be a memorable and fun time.
A little background about the Northeast Fall Field Days, there are 15 Shrine Centers in
the Northeast, 5 in Canada from Ottawa to Newfoundland and 10 in New England. Every fall, all 15 Shrine Temples come together for a weekend of fun, renewing acquaintances, competitions, and a parade. A business meeting is also held to discuss important
topics for the Northeast Shrine Association. Every 15 years, each temple has the opportunity to host the Northeast Fall Field Days. This year is Kora Shrines turn. The Northeast Fall Field Days is usually attended by the Imperial Potentate and other members of
the Imperial Divan, as well as other Shrine and Masonic dignitaries. All Shriners and
their families are invited to attend.
The weekend will start on Thursday September 17 with opening ceremonies at Lewiston's Veterans Park. Friday activities will include a meeting to conduct the business of
the Northeast, followed by a free afternoon to enjoy the area and prepare for the motorized competitions, band presentations and other exhibitions. Kora Shrine's building is
one of the most unique Shrine buildings in all of Shrinedom and it will be open all day
for tours. A marketplace will also be open all weekend. Motorized competitions will
start early Saturday morning and a Ladies luncheon will be held at Kora. Saturday afternoon will be filled with the parade of the 15 Shrine Temples of the Northeast as they
wind their way through the downtown streets of Lewiston. This parade is usually 2 to 3
hours long and the parade in 2015 will be one to remember. Saturday night will be a
Lobster Bake (with steak for the non-lobster folks) at Lewiston's Simard-Paine park.
Trophies for the winners of the various weekend competitions will be awarded.
During the weekend there will also be several presentations at the Shriners Musical Exhibition. All Temples in the Northeast who have musical units are encouraged to attend
and join in the fun and presentations. Come and listen to the various bands, drum corps,
pipers, and Oriental Bands during the weekend. Clown units are also planning to compete.
The Mid-Winter business meeting of the Northeast Shrine Association will be held during the weekend of March 13 to 15, 2015. The Mid-Winter meetings are attended by
leadership of all the Temples in the Northeast. Plans for the Northeast Fall Field Days
are reviewed, the latest news of the Shrine and the Hospitals are reviewed by all present
and most importantly, the order of march for the fall parade is determined. The Imperial
Membership committee is planning a seminar on membership.
Please check out the Facebook page - Northeast Shrine Association NSA 2015. The
latest news, event schedules and information will be posted on the page - you just gotta
like it to keep up to date.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Lewiston, Maine.

Shriners Hospitals For Children
Pediatric Specialty Hospitals
Douglas E. Maxwell
President and CEO
My Dear Fellow Representatives and Nobles, This is such a beautiful time of the year to
be with family and friends in a very festive spirit. Patricia and I would like to wish you
and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukah and a Happy New Year.
I would like to update you on some thoughts from the Chairman's "Fall Message".
--Shriners Hospitals and Mayo Clinics proceed to a closer relationship.
For the last two years, your Joint Boards have been working with the Twin Cities Board
of Governors and Staff to find an improved relationship between these two organizations. At this past November Board meeting, the National Boards approved moving
forward with an expanded affiliation agreement with the Mayo Clinic Care Network
“System Wide”. This new program will give Shriners Hospitals physicians the ability to
work with the Mayo Clinic’s physicians through a variety of paths such as e-consults,
ask-a-Mayo expert, archived grand rounds and knowledge sharing collaborative efforts
in research and medical education.
But most importantly, Mayo will help us to develop a meaningful Shriners Hospitals
“Outcomes Studies” using the Mayo proven guidelines.
Outcome Studies are the specific data relating to a Shrine medical procedure. It will
allow a parent looking for specific care for their child, to know if one of our doctors has
done this before and how successful he or she was in the care they provided. You might
ask "What is Shriners Hospitals contribution to this partnership?" Shriners bring 92
years of great “Pediatric Expertise” in orthopedics, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, scoliosis, cleft lip and palate, and acute burns care. We also bring a care presence from coast
to coast in the United States, plus Canada and Mexico. Shriners is also a very healthy
financial organization. Neither of these two great organizations are looking for a financial solution as part of this affiliation. Each organization has a great foundation and
have been pillars of healthcare in America with combined experience of more than 180
years. This is a great association for both Organizations.
An interesting thought was brought to our attention during these meetings. In the early
part of the 20th century when our Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine
was beginning its path to take care of children with polio—two brothers with the last
name of Mayo, who were Shriners in Minnesota, began treating adults in Rochester
Minnesota with their medical issues.
To now have the great Mayo Clinics, coming together with the great Shriners Hospitals
for Children, 92 years later, and beginning to perform some of the “worlds” greatest
medicine, is bringing this story full circle.

--Puerto Rico Initiative
As was mentioned in the last message, our Shriners Hospitals in Philadelphia has been
providing Orthopedic “outreach clinics” in Puerto Rico for the last 40 Years. Twice a
year, families would bring their children to a clinic run by the Philadelphia medical
staff, in hopes that Shriners would be able to help their child. Many hundreds of children would show up for each of these semi-annual events. If the doctor’s examination
determined Shriners could help, the child and a parent would be flown north to Philadelphia. Because of the long distance and the expense of the air travel, that parent and
child would often be required to stay in Philadelphia for quite some time. Compare this
to families who live close enough that they could be driven home after each procedure
by one of our Shrine vans. We have been working with the Government of Puerto Rico,
our Philadelphia hospital leadership and the University of Puerto Rico to develop a plan
to expand the Care provided on the island.
Using our new Tijuana model of taking our “Great Medical Capabilities” closer to
where the patient lives...we talked with the Governor of Puerto Rico for over an hour on
September 9th about some new possibilities. We indicated that with the support and
backing from the local government, the Philadelphia hospital could perhaps increase
what it accomplishes here on the island. That meeting with the Governor has brought
forth a wonderful new direction in orthopedic care for the children of Puerto Rico and
the Caribbean basin. The Government of Puerto Rico has stated that it will participate
in a very substantial and meaningful way, to help Shriners Hospitals/Philadelphia develop a more regular presence in San Juan. Currently, on the island of Puerto Rico, we
have identified 6 Pediatric Orthopedic surgeons, who are willing to become credentialed “Shrine Doctors” for at least one day a week to provide a regular care on the island for the children. Some of the physicians have already received their training at a
Shriners Hospital. This increased care presence will be in collaboration with our Philadelphia surgeons and will provide our great expertise in care without the burden of
extensive travel. As Tijuana relates to our Los Angeles Hospital, The less complicated cases would be done locally with both Medical staffs working together. The complex
cases will continue to be accomplished in Philadelphia. (A side note; the Governor reminded us that all children in Puerto Rico are covered by insurance)
These new Puerto Rican doctors will also participate in an ongoing educational exchange with the SHC Philadelphia medical staff to keep their skills up to date.
--Executive Vice President, John McCabe —Finances
I have asked our Executive Vice President, John McCabe, to update us on the financial
position of our philanthropy as we approach the mid-point between our Annual Meeting
Updates.
John McCabe: Doug has asked me to give you a mid-session update on our finances. As
you are aware, we have been working very hard at getting our spending under control
without adversely affecting the patient care we provide at our hospitals worldwide. We
are doing just that.
24
__ The Bektash News
--We are continuing to spend smart. As a result, our current spend rate on the endowment is less than 4.9%. This is down from a high of almost 9%.
--We are continuing to strive for new revenues. Our fundraising efforts continue to pay
off. This year is shaping up to be the highest donation level yet. We continue our efforts with third party pay and look forward to another good year.
Finally, we are working hard to continue to increase the yield on the endowment fund.
You may recall that in 2008 our endowment fund ranked in the 77 percentile among
other like sized endowments. In 2013, we got that ranking up to the 13th percentile.
This year SHC's endowment fund was selected by CIO Magazine as a finalist in the
healthcare organization category for industry innovation. We also rank 7th in fundraising among all healthcare organizations by Chronicles of Philanthropy.
But the work is not over yet. There still continues to be volatility in the markets. We
need to be able to adjust as needed -- being defensive or opportunistic as the circumstances dictate. I am confident that our team can do just that and continue the success.
It's important that we stay the course during this volatility and these short term market
shifts. We need to stay the course under our Strategic Plan to balance the budget by
2018 and secure the long term financial security of SHC.
There is light at the end of the tunnel. The Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates low,
the 10 year bond is approximately 2%. Historically the 10 year bond yields were approximately 5%. Once the markets are allowed to recover to historic levels, the additional 3% yield will go a long way to achieving our goal of having a balanced budget
by 2018. In the mean time we need to continue to spend smart, and seek out other
sources of revenue. We need to focus on fundraising and increasing our donor base.
These are things we can all do to help.
Thank you for all you do for Shriners Hospitals for Children.
John McCabe
--New Honolulu Research to help epilepsy
Our Honolulu researchers have been given a grant of $58,000 by the Hawaiian Medical
Service Association to study how to help young people with epilepsy have fewer seizures.
The Neurodevelopmental Clinic at our hospital headed by SHC neurologist Dr. Ryan
Lee with the assistance of our clinical dietician Miki Wong are launching a new Ketogenic Diet program to do the study.
This diet gives the brain an alternate source of fuel. The best candidates for this study
are patients with epilepsy whose normal medications are not working for them.
December
January

___

This ketogenic diet is high in fat, adequate in protein and low in carbohydrates. This diet
changes the way the body uses energy and leads to elevated levels of ketone bodies in
the blood, which is called ketosis. Studies have shown that this diet helps decrease the
severity and frequency of seizures, though it might not be safe for every patient.
Our doctors will work with each patient individually to come up with a diet plan and
then closely supervise the child while they are on it. The diet is strict but can be modified to allow the parents some flexibility for their life conditions. Shriners Hospitals
continue to make a difference in many children’s lives, through both our great clinical
care and our equally aggressive research.
--Mexico City Hospital
In late November, I had the opportunity to be at our Mexico City hospital. As we entered
the hospital at 7:00am that morning, our lobby was already filled with families waiting to
be seen that day.
For the second year, this Shrine hospital is doing clinical operations from 7:00am in the
morning till 8:30pm in the evening, 5 days a week, to improve our children’s lives,
They are again on a pace to see over 60,000 children this year. My fellow Nobles and
Ladies...our humanitarian mission in Mexico has helped more children than any of us
can imagine. We can all take Great Pride in what our forefathers began and that all of us
are continuing in a most magnificent way...As we proceeded past this group in the “entry
lobby” and entered the multiple “inner waiting rooms”, each of these areas were also
completely filled with families.
When one looks into the eyes of these family members, you can see how hopeful they
are that this place called...
--Los Hospitales Shriners Para Ninos...
--will make their child better...
--to walk for the first time in an upright position...
"To smile again"
"Strong supporters of our Shriner's Hospitals, Mexican Presidente Vicente' Fox and his
wife, visited our children when he was in office. He is being introduced to one of "our
kids" by Chief of Staff, Dr. Felipe Haces".

Did You Ever Want to Run Away
& Join the Circus?
Now you can (sorta) with
Bektash "Clown-For-A-Day"!!!
You've heard about the Bektash Clown Unit - a bunch of slightly crazy Shriners who
have more fun than ... well, a barrel-full of clowns. We make people laugh and especially make kids smile (a very Shriner thing to do, don't you think?). And we're looking for a "few good wannabe clowns" to join our unit.
Admit it, you know you've thought about how it would be so much fun to try!! And
now you can with the Bektash Clowns "Clown For A Day". Try being a clown for just
one day and see what it's all about. Join us at a parade or other event. We'll get you
into a costume, put on your clown face, pair you up with a Bektash Clown for the day,
and make sure you have the best time ever! Maybe you'll want to do it again and join
our unit, but even if you don't you'll have a day to remember! And we'll even take a
photo of you with the unit.
For over 25 years the Bektash Shrine Clowns have entertained generations of families
and children across New Hampshire. From St. Patrick's Day through 4th of July, all
summer long, and into the Holiday season you've found us at town parades and other
events, putting smiles on faces of all ages!
What are you waiting for?

THE100MILLIONDOLLARCLUB
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving
and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children,
regardless of their ability to pay.
The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals
comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising
events; investment income; and support from the Shriners International.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your
help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized
care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too
many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large
sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps.
In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals
for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was established in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100
million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of
$100 or more.
HOWTOJOIN
There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million
Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of
$100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding
a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners
Hospitals for Children. Shriners. Please fill out the form on the
right and send your contribution to Bektash Shriner's Recorder
Joel Weinstein.
WHATYOURECEIVE
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing
that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Children will be able to continue helping children in the years to
come.
