ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE PRE-VETERINARY SCIENCE Course Selection Guide Updated Fall Semester 2015 This pre-professional plan has been developed by referencing the admission requirements for the Veterinary School at NCSU, the only veterinary school in the State of NC. Students are advised to decide on a primary major and a college so they may combine the prerequisites listed here for Doctor of Veterinary Science with the requirements for their major and chosen school. Students who successfully complete an AS degree will have satisfied the General Education requirements at every public university in North Carolina as well as the private colleges that are signatories of the 2014 Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. Students who transfer without the AA or AS degree must complete the General Education core requirements at the receiving institution. General Education – 45 SHC (“Semester Hours of Credit”) Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) Courses (31-32 SHC): UGETC courses are courses which are guaranteed to fulfill a general education component at every public university in North Carolina and at the private colleges that are signatories to the 2014 Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. The courses listed here are courses suggested or required by the four universities listed above. All courses listed below are UGETC courses. English Composition (6 SHC) ENG 111 Writing & Inquiry (3 SHC) ENG 112 Writing/Research in the Disciplines (3 SHC) Both required Humanities/Fine Arts (H/FA) (6 SHC)—Select two courses from separate disciplines One course (3 SHC) selected from ART 111, 114, 115; COM 231; MUS 110, 112 COM 231 One course (3 SHC) selected from ENG 231, 232, 241, 242; PHI 215, 240 Any Social and Behavioral Sciences (S/BS) (6 SHC)—Select two courses from separate disciplines One course (3 SHC) selected from HIS 111, 112, 131, or 132 One course (3 SHC) selected from ECO 251, 252; POL 120; PSY 150, or SOC 210 Any Any Mathematics (8 SHC)—Two courses selected from MAT 171, 172, 263, 271, 272 First Course Second Course MAT 172 MAT 263 or 271 Natural Science (8 SHC)—Two courses taken in a sequence selected from BIO 111 and 112; CHM 151 and 152; PHY 151 and 152 or PHY 251 and PHY 252 CHM 151 CHM 152—General Chemistry I CHM 152 CHM 152—General Chemistry II Pre-Veterinary Science Additional General Education Transfer Hours (15 SHC): These courses are not universally accepted as General Education Core courses at every public university in the state, but are required or recommended by either Durham Tech or by the Admissions Requirements for Veterinary School at NCSU. Foreign Language (3 SHC) Foreign Language (3 SHC): Choose from American Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, or Spanish. FL 112 Must be taken with accompanying lab. Foreign Language must be at 112 level or higher for Durham Tech requirements. See Foreign Language requirement, below. FL 112 is required by Durham Tech though the student’s first major or chosen school may require additional hours, or fewer. Additional Mathematics/Science Courses (12 SHC) First Course Second Course BIO 111 PHY 151 or 251* Third Course PHY 152 or 252** *PHY 251 has a prerequisite of MAT 271. **PHY 252 has prerequisite of MAT 272. Other Required Hours (15 SHC): Student should consult with his/her advisor. The listings here vary, based on the requirements of the selected university and the student’s intended major. College Transfer Success Course (1 SHC) ACA 122 (This course should be taken in the student’s first semester.) Required by Durham Tech Foreign Language (4-8 SHC) FL 111/181, 112/182– (4-8 SHC): If student has not met the prerequisite for the 211-level of Arabic, French, German, or Spanish. (Prerequisite for FL 111 is DRE 098.) FL 112/182 is required by Durham Tech Additional Major Course(s) Additional college level course(s) to complete the 15 SHC requirement. BIO 250 Students are advised to select courses based on their major and BIO 275 their school of choice. CHM 251 Additional requirements may be required. Consult the CHM 252 admissions requirements at your preferred Veterinary CHM 263 program. To graduate from Durham Tech, all students must demonstrate computer competency. That competency may be demonstrated by a satisfactory score on the computer competency test or by completing CIS 110 or CIS 115.
