Course timetable was attached at the end of the syllabus. Prerequisites: ME 262 Midterm1 : 26 October 2007 @ 16:00 hrs Midterm 2: 30 November 2007@ 16:00 hrs Midterm Dates Grading Homeworks : 20 % Midterm Exams : 25 % (each) Final : 30 % Some homeworks may receive a higher credit relative to others. Some homeworks may not receive credit, but are assigned to render the student familiar with a topic that will be useful in the remaining parts of the course. It is strongly recommended to spend about 1.5-2 hrs on the homeworks, and a quick review of the material that is covered in each class period. Attendance Minimum 80% Additional Remarks The book will be closely followed but the chapters will not be covered fully. Only necessary sections from each chapter will be given. Thus attendance, taking notes and class participation are all strongly recommended. Homeworks will be due in one week after they have been assigned. Please!! No late homeworks will be accepted. YEDITEPE UNIVERSITY C OU R SE SYLLA BU S 2007/2008-1 FACULTY OF EN GIN EERIN G AN D ARCHITECTUR E Course Code-Name ME 361 Modern Engineering Materials Course Objectives Most modern engineering systems involve composites, polymers and ceramics as well as modern engineering alloys. Students who take this course will increase their knowledge in the area of modern engineering materials, alloys, ceramics and polymers, understand how properties of modern engineering alloys may be manipulated using heat treatment processes. Students would benefit from such a course in their future career. Course Outcomes an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering Indicates the level of an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to satisfaction of the analyze and interpret data course for the an ability to design a system, component or process to meet outcomes listed. desired needs : Not Applicable : Not Satisfactory : Highly Satisfactory an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility an ability to communicate effectively the broad education is necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning a knowledge of contemporary issues an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice COURSE TIMETABLE ME 361 MODERN ENGINEERING MATERIALS FALL 2007 Date Lecture 14 Sept 07 Introduction to Modern Engineering Materials 21 Sept 07 Engineering Alloys 28 Sept 07 Aluminum and Copper Alloys 5 Oct 07 Nickel and Titanium Alloys 12 Oct 07 Holiday 19 Oct 07 Magnesium Alloys 26 Oct 07 Midterm Exam 1 2 Nov 07 Polymeric Materials 9 Nov 07 Processing of Plastic materials and Engineering Thermoplastics 16 Nov 07 Engineering Ceramics 23 Nov 07 Mechanical Properties of Ceramics 30 Nov 07 Midterm Exam 2 7 Dec 07 Composite Materials 14 Dec 07 Metal matrix and ceramic matrix Composites 21 Dec 07 Holiday 28 Dec 07 Review of Modern Engineering Materials Final Exams HW HW1 (will be attached) HW2 (will be attached) HW3 (will be attached)
