The College
Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, (1805-1871)
Blessed Chavara, our Inspiration, was a great visionary and pioneer who
left his footprints in the fields of education, social reform, communication,
culture and religious formation.
Christ College, Pune was born out of the educational vision of Blessed
Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the founder of CMI congregation. Blessed Chavara
was a great educationalist and a social reformer of the 19th century. He
could foresee the changes in the environment and make strategic moves to
build up a better society based on the fatherhood of God and the
brotherhood of humanity.
He was born on 10th February 1805 at Kainakary, Kerala, was trained as a
Priest, found his calling in serving humanity cutting across caste, creed and
gender and founded CMI Congregation in the year 1831.
Christ College, Pune is a noble venture by “Carmel Vidya Bhavan Trust”
formed by the members of the congregation of the Carmelites of Mary
Immaculate (CMI).
The first Catholic Sanskrit School (1846), seminaries for the education and
formation of the clergy, a publishing house, a house for the dying and the
destitute, schools for general education were some of his major
contributions.
Christ College, Pune is a Christian minority institution, where students of all
castes, religions, creeds and languages are encouraged to be part of this
temple of learning. Christ College is affiliated to The University of Pune, one
of the largest State Universities in India.
Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious
congregation of India with a membership of 2000, renders its service to
humanity in educational, social, health care and other activities, aiming at
the integral development of the society.
Having a great legacy in the field of education, Christ College strives to
impart quality education without any distinction inspiring them to become
men and women of integrity. The motivated faculty ensures that our
students are trained in tune with the latest developments in the industry.
