The Jewish Adventure in Canada There are roughly 350,000 Jews in Canada, forming the fourth largest Jewish community in the world. Although we are only 1.2% of Canada’s population, we nonetheless play an important role in Canadian society. We will start by looking at our status today in the 21st century, and work our way back century by century, through the 20th century to our 18th century origins in the country. Identity Theft? Judaism and the History of Art Examine artists, artworks, and artistic periods to investigate the complex role of Jewish identity, and its relevance to the 20th-century art world. Why? Science and Torah Science offers an attractive world view. It is based on concrete observations, testable hypotheses and demonstrable facts that can be felt and touched. The Torah world view is faith-based, attributing all the world's complexity to an unseen, unknowable G-d, that cannot be proven to exist. In this light the classic battle between Science and Torah for our hearts and minds hardly seems like a fair fight. This course will examine the dissonance and consonance in the science versus Torah debate. Israel - A Lyrical Culture The lyrics of Israel's popular music often give voice to its national and cultural mindset. An in depth exploration the lyrics of various popular songs will provide us with a frozen moment in time where political, emotional, and cultural trends can be detected and analyzed. Listen to the music, explore the lyrics, gain some insight into the Israeli frame of mind. In the past five years we have recounted many personal stories of our own London survivors. Our intention is to tell and document all of our beloved London Holocaust survivor stories. Don’t miss three more emotional memories on Sunday, May 1st. Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day) The fourth of Iyar, the day preceding Israel’s Independence Day, was declared by the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) to be a Memorial Day for those who lost their lives in the struggle that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and for all military personnel who were killed while in active duty in Israel’s armed forces and victims of terrorism. Joining these two days together conveys a simple message: Israeli’s owe their independence and the very existence of the Jewish state to those who sacrificed their lives for it. Please come out to be together as we pay tribute to those Israeli soldiers and victims of terrorism who have lost their lives. “Voices of the Holocaust” Remember Israel’s Fallen Soldiers Date Sunday, May 1, 2011 Time 7:00pm – 8:30pm Venue JCC, Harris Room Date Monday, May 9, 2011 Time 7:00pm – 8:30pm Venue JCC, Harris Room 15 Every Penny Counts Penny Project In an attempt to create a tangible metaphor of the tragedy of the Holocaust Milton District High School has begun “The Penny Project”. Their staff and students, with help from many community friends are attempting to collect one penny for each person lost in the Holocaust. The culmination of the Penny Project will be a two-day Holocaust conference held at Milton District High School in November, 2010. As they work to gather pennies their message is emphatic. In no way are they equating pennies with the priceless lives lost in the Holocaust they are simply attempting to get a better visual understanding of the devastating magnitude. Please help Milton District High School collect pennies by bringing your pennies to the Jewish Community Centre and placing them in our milk can in the front foyer. Only pennies will be accepted.
