EUROPEAN MUSLIMS AND EASTERN
CHRISTIANS: THE BROKEN MIRRORS
“…a thrilling journey….” –LE MONDE
“See it. Listen to it, but don’t miss it.”
– Jean-Luc Pouthier, LE MONDE DE BIBLE
From Muslims in Bosnia-Herzegovina to
Christians in Lebanon, from the Bektashis of
Macedonia to the Syriacs of Turkey, director
Jacques Debs helps us discover two groups of
people long forgotten or ignored--the Muslims in
Europe and the Christians in the Middle East.
For centuries, these Muslims and Christians
have lived jointly in the old Ottoman Empire,
despite experiencing some disappointing
setbacks and failures, including genocide. Yet,
they are either overshadowed or they live in exile
in their homelands. Debs uses his personal story
as a Christian from Lebanon as a starting point,
while illuminating the complexities of the modern
Mediterranean area, making the film at once
personal and universal.

Polish director Janusz Kidawa (Ultimatum)
brings us a very personal film with a conscience.
Three construction workers live together in a tiny
private apartment while building a new factory.
Their foreman, Kolecki, is supposed to be
supervising the production line, but instead he
abuses his position by neglecting his
responsibilities. After Kolecki is fired, the three
friends are determined to stay the course and
finish the factory.
With its focus on the dissatisfaction of
everyday life and the breakdown of moral values,
Kidawa’s film echoes the “Cinema of moral
concern” associated with Krzysztof Kieslowski
and Krzysztof Zanussi. HORIZONTAL
LANDSCAPE offers a snapshot into an era when
Communism still dominated society and culture,
but unrest and dissatisfaction signaled change on
the horizon.
HORIZONTAL LANDSCAPE. Pejzaz Horyzontalny. Written and directed
by Janusz Kidawa. With Mieczyslaw Hryniewicz, Jaroslaw Kopaczewski,

Documentary filmmaker Raymundo
Gleyzer was the founder of the Cine de la Base, a
group dedicated to bringing revolutionary films to
the people. In 1976, he was abducted and thrown
into a concentration camp by Argentina’s military
dictatorship, then tortured and murdered by a
paramilitary group operating within Argentina's
military dictatorship. MEXICO: THE FROZEN
REVOLUTION, his best-known film, reveals his
commitment to social change in Latin America.
Using rare newsreel footage of Pancho
Villa and Emiliano Zapata, Gleyzer connected the
betrayal of the 1910 Mexican Revolution with the
failure of revolution in his own time. At risk to his
own safety, he then exposed the PRI--the party
that governed Mexico for almost 70 years—as
corrupt. Also included on this DVD are the shorts
films, THE LAND BURNS and IT HAPPENED IN
HUALFIN.
MEXICO: THE FROZEN REVOLUTION. Mexico, la Revolucion
Congelada. Written and directed by Raymundo Gleyzer. Cinematography
by Humberto Rios. Edited by Steve Susman. Produced by Bill Susman
and Sam Crane, with Paul Leduc in Mexico.

Hualfin.
