YEAR 5 LITERACY: We will be reading the epic poem, ‘The Highwayman’ this half term. Pupils will analyse it for language feature and poetic devices. They will write their own verse in the style of Alfred Noyce and then write an autobiography from the point of view of one of the main characters in this narrative poem. NUMERACY: Finding unknown numbers and working with primes, factors and multiples will open the half term. Venn and Carroll diagrams will follow together with sorting numbers according to different criteria. Multiplication and division will be studied together with embedding long methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication. SCIENCE: The life cycle of plants and animals will be our focus this term. We will start growing some seeds and water them at regular intervals hoping to see something grow. We will sketch, colour in and label the parts of plants and be able to name them and describe what each part does. We will then look at some animal life cycles. TOPIC: The Vikings is our topic this half term and we will be continuing from the Anglo Saxons learnt about last half term. Where did the Vikings come from, where did they land in Britain, what is their legacy? ICT: Pupils will be studying sensors for recording light and temperature this half term. They will decide on their own area of study and present it in either excel or publisher. Pupils will also be taught Music, French and PE each week. RE will take place as an RE Day towards the end of the half term. TAKE AWAY TASK SPRING 2 2014 As we will be focusing on a long narrative poem for our Literacy work, I would like you to do some research and find a short (not longer than 3 verses) poem that you like about spring and/or Easter. Once you have found it, I would like you to learn it off by heart so that you can recite it to the rest of the class in the week before Easter. Don’t panic! This is a fun activity, there are loads and loads of poems that are suitable for reciting: funny ones, sad ones, ones that rhyme, ones that don’t etc. So, have some fun and get searching! It would be a good idea to recite your chosen poem to your parents/guardians/friends prior to your ‘performance’ in class. There are books in the school library you could use and, of course, there are lots of poems online.
