FOOTBALL LEGEND JOINS
COWLEY FOR CELEBRATION
EVENING
Accelerated Reader, the innovative online
program designed to improve reading skills for
students in Year 7 and Year 8, has had a
significant impact on raising students’
motivation in reading and in raising their

On Thursday, 8th November, Cowley celebrated
its biggest ever Presentation Evening with an
audience of over 600 people, made up of
students, staff, parents, governors and special
guest, Gordon Banks, OBE.
The English department has proudly announced

8: Dominic Wills with 1,000,592 words read
since the beginning of the term. Plus, two word
multi-millionaires: Kelly Buckley and Georgia
McInroy, both gaining ‘Word Millionaire’ status
during the last academic year and having
already reached a million words for a second
time since September!
Not to be outdone, Year 7 also have a ‘Word

COWLEY’S DEBATING TEAM
REACH NEXT ROUND IN
THE DEBATING MATTERS
COMPETITION
Blue Coat school in Liverpool became the
hub for heated discussion and argument as it
hosted the Merseyside regional round of the
nationally acclaimed ‘Debating Matters’
competition earlier this month.
The hosts, Bluecoat school, went head to
head with Cowley debating on subjects such
as ‘Megacities are bad for the developing
world’ and ‘Extreme views should not be given
a platform’ in front of a panel of high profile
judges, including local MEP candidate for
Labour Julie Ward, columnist and broadcaster
Will Batchelor, Annie Gosling from ‘Business
in the Community’ and Pauline Hadaway from
‘Belfast Exposed’.
Cowley triumphed in both debates and the
team are now through to the Debating Matters
North West and North Wales round, which will
take place at Manchester Metropolitan
University in March 2014.

STUDENTS SHOWCASE
THEIR DESIGNS TO IKEA
DREAM TEAM
Recently, a number of Year 12 AS level
Product Design students had the opportunity
to present their project designs to Marketing
experts at IKEA in Warrington. The students
received invaluable brand and packaging

The School of Dreams programme helps young
people to understand the importance of pursuing their dreams and strategies to help turn
their dreams into reality. It was developed by
Honda (UK) and a team of independent
education experts as part of Honda’s
commitment to giving back to the local
communities in which it operates.
Students in Year 11 have
recently taken part in
the Barclays Money skills
programme, a UK wide
initiative developed to
help improve young
people’s financial skills, knowledge and
confidence.
Mr Dickinson, Assistant Principal, said: “We
were delighted to host the School of Dreams.
We believe in providing opportunities for
students to aim high and achieve their dreams
and this initiative enabled students to develop
skills and strategies that they can use to help
turn their ambitions into reality.”
The programme aims to help young people
make independent and informed decisions
about budgeting, spending, saving, investing,
using credit, avoiding debt and improve their
understanding of the implications of their
choices.
