In 2004, when we adopted the national park theme and transitioned from the Sioux Federation under the YMCA Indian Guides & Princess Program to the Lake Prairie Federation under the new YMCA Adventure Guides & Princess program, the newsletter was re-branded and issued under its current name of Pathfinder. The Pathfinder staff has been perusing some old issues of Smoke Signals and found some interesting items: • April 1992’s edition identified Terry Weppler as Federation Chief. Mr. Weppler is currently the Mayor of Libertyville. • Smoke Signals was printed and sent via US Mail to every member. • The May 1991 issue reminds members that cost for the Spring campout is $35 per person, which included both Friday and Saturday nights. Today, 20 years later, campout costs have risen only to $70 per person for a 2-night stay. • In 1991, Camp Tecumseh and Camp Anokjig were the two primary Spring campout locations. It just goes to show how these camps have endured to provide a fabulous setting for our Spring campout celebrations. • A 1991 graduate from the program (assuming 11 year old 5th grader) would be 31 years old today. • The October 1991 edition provides information about the Induction Ceremony which was held at Big Bear Lake in Vernon Hills, IL just as we do today. The ceremony was conducted by the Wisconsin Indian Dance Team back then. The Smoke Signals issue included a small saying: We, father and son/daughter, through friendly service to each other, to our family, to this tribe, and to our community, seek a world pleasing to the eye of the Great Spirit Stay tuned for future looks back at our history. 5 HISTORY LESSON This past year in the Voyageurs Expedition, we put an emphasis on creating new Tribal and Expedition property. We created a banner that hangs from a totem pole. On the front of the banner were all the patches that we've used over the years, old and new, courtesy of past Chiefs and what we got from The Patch Store. On the back of the banner we put a brief history of the program, the Federation and Voyageurs, which used to be called the Minneconjou Nation. In that history, we listed every single Nation/Expedition Chief from the first year of Minneconjou, This spanned 1992-93 up through current Expedition Chief Liam Gallup. To compile the history, I gathered this info by tracking down old Fed and Nation Chiefs and talking to them. I got back as far as 1983 in talking to Bill McNellis, the Fed Chief in 1990-91, before the trail ran cold. There were just five Nations in 1991, but with so many tribes, they would do campouts with half the tribes going on one weekend and the other half going on another. That's what caused the creation of new nations. The April 1992 Smoke Signals has the Fed meeting agenda that dealt with the existing Nations, then Yankton and Teton, splitting up to form new Nations. The proposed new Nations didn't even have names yet, just Princess Nation #1, #2, #3, and Guides Nation #1 and #2. For the record, Guides Nation #2 became Oglala, now Acadia; Princess Nation #2 became Wahpeton, now Mesa Verde (my, how things have changed), and Princess Nation #3 became Minneconjou, now Voyageurs. The names Yankton (Princess Nation # 1) and Teton (Guides Nation # 1) were kept. The Nation names were selected from different bands of the Lakota Sioux. Scott Anderson aka Grey Fox Voyageurs & Rocky Mountain Expeditions Proud Father of White Rabbit, Hawkeye and Little Brown Bear Last of the Arapahoe Editor’s Note: Scott Anderson forwarded the old Smoke Signals documents highlighted on the prior page. These documents were provided by Rod True, the first Minneconjou Nation Chief. 6 MY FAVORITES Some of my favorite activities so far this year include the World's Largest Tailgate party at the fall camp out at camp Lakotah. We had to throw footballs at the pigs sitting on a fence and kick field goals. Another thing I really liked was the Punchbowl football campfire where fire marshal Mighty Oak arrived to ensure a safe fire. The Olympics I liked guessing how many jellybeans were in the jar. Most recently at the Holiday Party there was 4 jump houses, lots of games and fun balloon shapes. Soon we have the winter campout and hope we have snow to sled. I hope it is not below zero there but at least these cabins are nice and heated. Taylor Filicette - Shining Star Mighty Tenaya / Yosemite Expedition 7 THE PRINCESS PROGRAM The first reason I like the Princess program is you get to go on campouts with your Dad or Mom and do fun stuff like crafts. And you get to do races with your tribe. It is really fun at the campouts, and you get to play games too. Second reason is that my Dad is the Chief and I get to help him with stuff like passing out flying pigs or football whistles to the girls. I really like helping him with stuff and being with him at the campouts, and with my sister Nicole. My third reason is I get to watch movies at the campouts, and get to sleep on bunk beds with my sister and Dad. Fourth is I like to horseback ride with my tribe, and I like to talk to all my friends and make up little plays and chants with the Tenaya girls. I also like pumpkin bowling with the other tribes. I just really like the Princess program. So have fun and be good at the campouts, so you don't have to come home from the campout for being bad. Samantha Mock - Fire Flower Yosemite Expedition - Mighty Tenaya Tribe 8 SPARKLING SNOWFLAKE’S FAVORITES I am having so much fun in my second year with Tenaya. So far this year my favorite things are... - - - Chasing and tackling the punky QB Grey Cougar at the fall campout, remember we got a funny sounding whistles I liked archery at the fall campout At the Induction Ceremony I liked the fireworks and walking through the teepee of fire Kicking a field goal at the Olympics was fun. I liked the bounce houses and the balloons at the holiday party I love roller skating and I can't wait for the daddy daughter dance and the campouts. My favorite Tenaya chant for the snake dances is: "Extra, Extra, Read All About It, We're the Tenaya and We're Gonna Shout It! TENAYA! Told You We Were Going to Shout It, No Doubt About It!" But mostly I like spending time with my Dad and sisters especially when he was the chief. Jordan Filicette - Sparkling Snowflake Yosemite Expedition - Mighty Tenaya 9 WHAT I LOVE BEST ABOUT THE PRINCESS PROGRAM What I love about the Princess program is when we go to meetings. It is so much fun to see my tribe and mess around with them! Sometimes we will go to a house, and sometimes we go bowling! But what I love BEST of all the things I do is spending time with my sister and Dad! Nicole Mock - Sun Flower Yosemite Expedition - Mighty Tenaya Tribe 10 GROWLING TIGER GOES GAGA FOR GAGA BALL We went to the Holiday party. My brothers and I walked around. We played games. We ate hotdogs. But my favorite thing was Ga-Ga. My dad even played! It was fun. Zach Estell - Growling Tiger Haleakala Expedition – Hawaii Tribe WILD BILL’S FUN CRAFT PRJECT Hosting an Adventure Guides meeting is fun. But boys are not usually inclined to sit in one place and quietly work on a craft. So the biggest challenge is finding an activity or craft the boys will enjoy. I wanted to share a successful craft and activity from our last meeting making a Bull Roarer. These were used by American Indian children as noise makers. They were also used by the medicine men to drive away evil spirits with the noise they make. It is simply a flat piece of wood at the end of a string. When whirled around the head, a whizzing or moaning sound is made. If you’ve seen Crocodile Dundee II this is the device the character Mick Dundee uses to ‘make a phone call’. Once made you now have a noisy activity for the boys! Just make sure there is nothing breakable nearby. John Estell - Wild Bill Haleakala Expedition – Hawaii Tribe 11 DUNCAN BEATS LAKOTA Hi my name is Grace Reblin. I am here to tell you about Yosemite that I am in. My favorite thing is the campouts. My favorite thing is stinky foot. I am going to tell you about the parties that we have every year. We have a daddy daughter dance, and we have a holiday party. I am going to you about a little about stinky foot. We go to cabins and put stinky foot in their cabin and run away so they can’t see you .I am going to tell you about the camp grounds .The favorite camp ground is Camp Duncan. The least favorite camp ground is Camp Lakota The last thing I am going to tell you about is the meetings. We do crafts we eat food we drink water, coke, Gatorade, and lot of other drinks too. That’s what we do at campouts and meetings. Grace Reblin – Wild Rose Yosemite Expedition – Tenaya Tribe TECUMSEH IS TOPS Hi this is Luke Reblin. I am 11 years old and I am in the FALCON tribe. I just wanted to say that Campouts are really fun. My favorite campsite is Tecumseh. My favorite part is the archery and horseback riding. The Olympics, the holiday party and the parades are my three favorite events. At the holiday party you can play in the bounce houses and lots of fun games. At the Olympics you can play a lot of extremely fun games and if you are lucky you can host a game. At the parades you throw candy to the people on the side of the roads. That is all my favorite events and campsite.
