U.S. History Regents Prep Assistant Educator Needed at the Museum of the City of New York Founded in 1923 as a private, non-profit corporation, the Museum of the City of New York connects the past, present, and future of New York City. It celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center at the Museum serves over 43,000 children and adults each school year through fieldtrips, afterschool programs, family programs and professional development. The Museum of the City of New York offers Surpass! a free afterschool program that prepares at-risk students in grades 11 and 12 for the U.S. History Regents exam in June 2015. The course meets for 21 sessions from March 2 – May 21, and provides a review of core topics in U.S. History and intensive training in test-taking strategies to help students excel in document-based questions, multiple choice, and thematic essays. The course draws from the Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition Activist New York that features material related to social movements, including abolition, women’s suffrage, labor rights, and the Civil Rights Movement. Students will also analyze photographs, objects, documents, and political cartoons from the Museum’s exhibitions and collections. We are currently seeking an educator to co-teach the course and focus on helping students develop their skills on the document-based questions and writing sections of the exam. Educators must be available from 3:30 – 6:00 pm on Monday – Thursday (March – May). This course will be offered in 2 sections— Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. We will consider educators for either one or both sections. Responsibilities • • • • • • • • • Teach document-based questions and essay sections of exam Help students improve their reading and writing skills and develop confidence Study past U.S. History exams, rubrics, and scoring guides Set up before and clean up after class Prepare study materials for students Work collaboratively with Senior Educator Assist in scoring students’ preliminary and midterm exams as well as practice sections throughout the course Keep records of students’ scores on test prep exercises and track their progress Tutor and meet with students individually or in small groups to provide feedback and help them improve Qualifications • • • • • • MS or MA in education or history Teaching experience Broad knowledge of American history Ability to teach struggling learners to develop analytic and writing skills Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for working with high school students Ability to work collaboratively Pay: $60 per afternoon ($20/hr x 3 hours per afternoon) for direct work with students. $1200 total for each section of the course.
