Black Coaches Association (BCA) Executive Director, Floyd Keith announced on Thursday June 1, during the State of the BCA Address at the Annual BCA National Convention and Expo in Miami, Fl., that after two years of careful consideration, to better reect
the mission of the BCA, the BCA Board of Directors voted to change the name of the
association to one of three options:
Diverse Coaches and Administrators (DCA)
Diverse Coaches and Administrators Association (DCAA)
or another name suggested by a member

for minority female basketball coaches
Sunday, June 4, served as the kickoff of the Black Coaches Association (BCA) Achieving Coaching Excellence (ACE) 4-day workshop
for minority female basketball coaches, which was held at Hyatt Indianapolis from June 4 to June 7. Among the program coordinators and
session presenters were: Beth Bass, WBCA CEO, Kim Barnes Arico, St. John’s University women’s head basketball coach and BIG EAST
Coach of the Year, Sue Donahue, Vice President for NCAA Division I women’s basketball, Jim Foster, Ohio State University women’s head
basketball coach, Rick Greenspan, Indiana University Athletic Director, Felicia Hall Allen, President and CEO of Felicia Hall Allen & Associates, Shann Hart, IUPUI Women’s Head basketball coach, Felisha Legette-Jack Indiana University women’s head basketball coach, Merritt
Norvell, President DHR International and former Michigan State University Athletic Director and more.
Now in its fourth year, the ACE program is made possible through a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) matching grant
program for minority female coaches. Activities for the ACE program is divided into “on-court” and “off-court” instruction to help enhance
opportunities for women of color in collegiate basketball. Be on the lookout for information about the 2007 Achieving Coaching Excellence
for minority male basketball coaches program as information will be posted at www.bcasports.org.

BCA 2006 High School Coach of the Year continues to prepare student-athletes
The Ted Ginn Foundation’s annual Ginn “Road to
Opportunity” Division I- Football Combine Bus Tour,
hosted by Black Coaches Association 2006 High School
Coach of the Year, Ted Ginn Sr., departed on June 9 for
a 12-day scholarship tour of mid-west universities. The
tour featured 47 of the nation’s top student-athletes from
20 inner-city high schools from around the state of Ohio
including Glenville, St. John’s Jesuit, Eastmoor Academy, Painesville Harvey, Beachwood and others.
Recent NFL draftees, Donte Whitner and Pierre Woods
were among his rst tour participants ve years ago.
Participants of this years’ tour met and worked out
for coaches at 12 major colleges and universities that
included: Bowling Green, the University of Iowa, Notre
Dame, University of Illinois, Purdue, Indiana University,
and University of Wisconsin. The tour, which concluded
at Eastern Michigan University on June 23, also featured
a two-day stop in Cincinnati for ACT academic testing.
Gin was one among four honorees of the Black Coaches
Association Coach of the Year Award. Shann Hart, IUPUI
Women’s Head Basketball Coach, was named Female
Coach of the Year, John Thompson III, Georgetown University Men’s Basketball Head Coach was named “Fritz
Pollard Male Coach of the Year, and Craig Littlepage,
University of Virginia Athletic Director was name BCA
Administrator of the Year.

BCA receives feedback from athletic administrators at NACDA
A Planned Positive Vision for the Future
The BCA Summit V for Equity in Hiring was also held
at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans, LA in conjunction
with the 2006 NACDA convention. The overall purpose
of this meeting is to evaluate the hiring practices in the
profession of athletics.

On Wednesday, June 21, at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans,
LA, the Black Coaches Association (BCA) held a general membership meeting in conjunction with the 2006 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention.
The meeting, which occurred from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the
Sheraton Hotel Napolean Ballroom A-1 and A-2, was open to all
NACDA convention attendees.
Throughout the year, the BCA holds membership meetings for
sport-specic segments that include: men’s and women’s basketball, football and administration. This is the third year the
BCA has held a membership meeting in conjunction with the
NACDA convention. Keith said the meeting will serve as a platform to give NACDA attendee’s an association updates and to
receive feedback from athletic administrators about the association’s future advancements.
Most recent BCA advancements include the BCA name change.

BCA to partner with Leareld Communications, Inc. beginning this fall
The Black Coaches Association (BCA) announces
a new marketing agreement with Leareld Communications, Inc. This new partnership, which was unanimously approved by the BCA Board of Directors on
Wednesday, May 31st at the Annual Black Coaches
Association National Convention and Expo in Miami,
FL, allows the association to continue to expand its
corporate sponsorship program. The initial term of the
agreement is for six years, beginning in the fall of
2006.
According to Floyd Keith, BCA Executive Director,
under the agreement, Leareld will create an entity
called BCA Properties and will hire a sales and management staff. BCA Properties will develop and direct
the corporate sponsorship programs connected with
the BCA.
“This relationship will assist the BCA in our continued pursuit of greater diversity in all aspects of
sports and athletic administration,” Keith said.
Leareld’s responsibilities will assist the BCA’s
corporate partnership effort, which includes corporate
sponsorship sales and the development of promotional
vehicles tied to BCA programs, events and initiatives.

Welcome Kennedy Wells, new BCA Director of Membership
Kennedy Wells joined the Black Coaches Association (BCA) staff on May 8, 2006 to assume the
duties of Director of Membership.
According to Floyd Keith, BCA Executive Director, the Director of Membership position is important because it is a direct link and liaison to the BCA
membership. “It is critical to have the right person in
place because you need someone who can deal with
our members’ concerns and issues,” Keith said.
Wells, who will is replacing Jamal Smith, has a
B.B.A. in Business Management from Eastern
Kentucky University. He
received a Master’s degree
in Physical Education/
Sports Management in
May 2006. His primary
duties as Director of
Membership will include
maintaining membership
communication, broadening and increasing BCA
membership and assisting with some BCA marketing efforts.
“Not only did Kennedy have a great interview,
but he also has broad expertise in a number of
areas,” Keith said. “Specically, he has great
experience with managing people and establishing relationships.”
Since the establishment of the Director of Membership position in 2002, the BCA membership
has grown by nearly 400 percent and has shown a
steady increase of at least 97 percent per year.
Currently, the BCA membership base has grown
to more than 3,000 members.The BCA’s drive in
the community is to address issues that pertain
to the participation and employment of minorities in sports. Throughout the BCA’s 19-year history, it has been at the forefront of many efforts to
enhance the employment opportunities and professional development of the minority professional.

James A. Lunsford is an active, community-oriented person. He is currently the Executive Director of the
Baldwin Youth Association, President the 100 Black Men Organization of Milledgeville Oconee Chapter,
a member of the Atlanta Tip-Off Booster Club Advisory Board, Nike Grassroots Senior Board, Commissioner at the Nike All America Camp and Michael Jordan Flight School, and Peach Jam Basketball Tournament.
He is also director of the Southern Prep Hoops Basketball camps, which are sponsored by the Baldwin
Youth Association, Inc. The camps are held throughout the country in states such as: Tennessee, Georgia,
Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina.
According to Lunsford, the mission of Southern Prep Hoops is to showcase the basketball talent of
high school players, junior college prospects and players in the presence of college basketball coaches
from all levels of recruiting services and prep schools while providing them the fundamentals of being
a student-athlete.The upcoming three-day, NCAA sanctioned, July Exposure Camp for Boys will be held
from July 21 to July 23 at the Walter Williams Rec. Center in Milledgeville, GA. For more information,

follow the directions to activate your account. If you
have already expired, you will be prompted to renew
your account at that time.
Other features of the Website include program information, BCA news and publications, Frequently Asked
Questions, BCA events and association history including staff and board of director biographies. You can
also download membership, convention registration,
program and scholarship forms. For specic program
information, with your computer mouse, simply navigate over the green links that are located in the black
bar on the BCA web page, scroll down to the topic of
