The Costume Shop
The Costume Shop in downtown Indiana rents
and sells costumes and accessories.
The shop was founded in 1985 by Donna
Stewart. Her love of costumes, vintage hats and
historical patterns were the discerning force behind her decision to open a business, said her son
Bill Strong. With the help of her patient husband,
Ken Stewart, they created The Costume Shop.
Now, 27 years later, her son runs the store with
the help of family and friends.
“The Costume Shop is open year-round and
with a strong Internet presence, we have enjoyed
steady growth,” said Strong. “Our repeat customers are our most valued commodity. These include schools from all over Pennsylvania, theater
groups, clubs and organizations. We boost over
3,000 rental costumes on site and specialize in
holiday characters like Santa and the Easter bunny.”
“Our accessory selection will astound you —
wall after wall of wigs, practical jokes, makeup,
hats and much, much more.”
“There is something for everyone at The Costume Shop,” Strong said. “Having a murder mystery? We can help. Having a birthday party? How
excited will your little one be when their favorite
cartoon character walks into the party?”
“So stop in and join us for our 27th Halloween
in Indiana,” Strong said. And remember: “It’s
More Fun in a Costume!”
Hildebrand’s Mowers and Saws
Hildebrand’s Mowers and Saws specializes in the
sales and service of small gasoline engine products.
In 1978, the Hildebrands purchased the business
from its original owner, Homer George. Mr. and
Mrs. C. Fred Hildebrand sold the business to
Charles and Cathy Hildebrand in 1985.
“We have been servicing small gas-powered engines in Indiana for 30 years with the help of two of
the finest mechanics in the county, Ralph Henry and
Robert Conrad,” said the owners. It allows Hildebrand’s to not only service what they sell but also
service many other brands.
“Our son Steven graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in small business
management,” said Charles and Cathy.
“He is working full time at the shop with his wife,
Erin, and they hope to take over the business.
Son Joseph graduated from Penns Manor High
School and will be attending Indiana University of
Pennsylvania this fall majoring in history education.
He will also be helping out with the family business.
“Grandpa C. Fred still stays involved helping
around the shop, and we continue to explore new
equipment ideas to find what will work best in Indiana County,” the Hildebrands said of the future.
“God has provided us with a small business here
in Indiana County and he has blessed us immensely.
It is our prayer that he will allow us to continue in
order to provide support for any of our four children
who wish to continue in the business.”
“Stop out and see the new lines of equipment displayed in our showroom.”
Culligan Water
Address:
1749 Wilson Ave., Indiana
Phone:
(724) 465-5611
Culligan Water has been serving
Indiana County for over 65 years
since the original dealership
opened on Locust Street in 1946.
In 1975, the business was relocated to 1749 Wilson Avenue
where it is owned and operated today by Brad Schry.
Schry is the second generation
“Culligan Man.” He purchased
the business in 1984 and operates
it with 13 employees including his
son Cody, who is taking time off
to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
The business sells and rents water treatment equipment and delivers bottled water, water coolers, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, water softeners and
salt.
Nationwide, and here in Indi-
ana, Culligan is the premier
leader in the water treatment industry, Schry said. “It is the dedication of our employees who provide that famous ‘Hey Culligan
Man’ service that has kept our
customer base growing every year
for the past 28 years.”
“The amazing features on our
current lineup of water treatment
equipment Culligan is now manufacturing has the highest efficiency ratings on salt and water usage
of anything on the market right
now. And the equipment is priced
lower than most of our competition as well.”
“Our customers also appreciate
our new line of ‘bottle-free’ water
coolers that eliminate the need for
water deliveries and storage of
five-gallon bottles.”

Debnar’s Pools, Spas,
Lawn and Garden
Debnar’s specializes in pool, spa, and
lawn and garden equipment. They carry
Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, Gravely and Stihl
equipment.
Lloyd and Linda Debnar started the
company in 1983, based on the principle
that pools and spas should be fun, not
work. Over the years, they have been
joined by their daughter and son-in-law
as well as many “adopted” family members.
Most recently, they have expanded their
Indiana location on Shelly Drive to right
next door to the previous Indiana location. Both stores offer the same services
and specials.

H2O Restoration Inc. are honest professionals, providing water treatment
systems on residential and commercial
applications.
“We are the area’s true well water experts,” said the owners.
Joe Cook has owned the company
since 1998 and has been working with
all types of water treatment equipment in
this area for nearly 30 years. Cook’s
company is a certified dealer of Kinetico
Water Systems, which are 100% American made, “unlike our competitors,” said
Cook. “Kinetico water systems have the
best manufacture’s warranty and are the
leading brand for non-electric systems.”
“I’ve been installing Kinetico nonelectric water systems now for nearly 15
years, and I can honestly tell you that we
do less service work on these systems,”
Cook said.
“We are the only professionals that offer more than one brand of equipment. If
you want the facts on electric compared
to non-electric, give us a call.”
Cook started his business in a small
building in Shelocta. Progress over the
last few years required him to move to a
bigger building, located on Route 422
beside the BP gas station, where the
business now services Indiana, Armstrong, Westmoreland and Jefferson
counties.
Cory Scrips (Cook’s son-in-law) is the
sales manager, Kathy Jo Scrips (Cook’s
daughter) is the office manager and
Justin Cook (Cook’s son) works in service.
“I feel good knowing that the business
will continue in good hands long after
I'm gone,” Cook said. “My family is just
as passionate about this business as I
am.”
“We are a very close family here at
H2O Restoration. We enjoy taking care
of families and businesses every day, being able to give them the best quality of
water possible. It’s our guarantee.”

“We’ve been in business since
1866,” said owner Jeffrey Tobin. “People ask us how we are able to thrive so
well in the midst of such fierce competition. Our answer: The competition
has to compete with US!”
“Price is no longer the issue,” he
said. “It’s a level playing field today
and our prices are as good or better
than anyone’s. The real issue is service, and no one can compete with us in
the service arena. We deliver where
people want it. We assemble and install furniture. In fact, we can deliver
thousands more items next day than
any of the national companies. People
get duped by national advertising and
think the best deal is elsewhere. I will
challenge anyone to the “best value”
contest against any of our major national competitors. If I lose, I’ll buy
lunch,” Tobin said.
“Our copier company continues to
grow as well. In fact, this year will be
our biggest in recent history. Quality
machines and highly trained technicians are critical, but we are also local,
so down time is kept to a minimum.
No one has to drive in from Pittsburgh
or Greensburg to work on your machine.”
“We are also authorized to service
many other office machines, such as
shredders, printers, fax machines and
even typewriters.”
“I urge everyone to compare us to
the competition so they can see what
they’ve been missing. We’re local, pay
local taxes and hire local people who
also build our local economy.”
“How can people do business locally? Just ask us.”

Lukcik’s Log Homes
Lukcik’s Log Homes is a custom, handcrafted
Scandanavian full scribe log home builder.
“We have been in the log home industry crafting log structures since 1987,” said family member Mark Lukcik. “Lukcik’s Log Homes will never be the largest producer. The reason is simple
— we don’t want to be. We are not interested in
mass production. Our goal is to design and build
the finest structures in the industry at affordable
prices.”
“It requires energy, enthusiasm and careful
planning,” he said. “That’s the way we like to
build and that’s why we refer to our customers by
name, not by number.”
The Lukciks had one of their homes featured
in the May 2011 Log Home Living magazine and
in the 2012 “Best Homes of the Year” special edition of the same magazine.
“We have grown to be more than just a log
home builder. We have also have done numerous
rustic conventional homes and commercial projects.”
Mark Lukcik and his wife Robin own the company. Mark is in charge of the bidding and construction of the projects while Robin takes care of
the books. As their children Justin and Amber get
older, they help when needed. Justin is currently
a student at the Indiana County Technology Center where he is enrolled in the heating, ventilation
and air conditioning program. “We hope to be
able to put his education to use in the construction of our homes,” his parents said.
Mumau Diesel Service and Truck Repair
Mumau Diesel Service and Truck Repair specializes in the repair of heavy-duty trucks, mid-range
busses and pickup trucks and is Cummins-engine
certified.
Family members are Fran, Jeff, Brian, Ed, Lenny,
Briana and Tyler. Lenny Mumau started the business
in 1981 with the idea of selling parts for heavy duty
trucks. He started repairing trucks that same year
and expanded to two bays in 1988.
Jeff started working as a parts person in 1989, after his Navy enlistment; Brian started as a mechanic
after training on Cummins engines; and Ed added a
welding and fabricating shop in 1999. In 2000, the
business added three bays and in 2010, moved the
welding shop to a separate location as the businss
grew. Two grandsons joined the business in 2007:
Brian “L.B.” as a mechanic and Tyler in data entry
and shipping. Brian is now sales manager.
The business also has two additional employees.
Ron Cymbor, who has been with the Mumaus since
2004, “is a great asset to our business,” said the owners, and “Bob Ackerson has been a mechanic with us
for a year. We are hoping to add two mechanics and
an office employee soon.”
“When Lenny decided to quit the trucking business as an over-the-road trucker and start a parts
store, he never imagined he would have three of his
four sons and two grandsons involved in the business,” said one family member. “He is very proud
and pleased at what his family has accomplished.”

Mechling Insurance offers life, property and casualty insurance, annuities, IRAs, surety bonds and
Roth IRAs.
After working as insurance adjuster, special
agent and commercial sales manager for Erie Insurance, William G. Mechling bought the William J.
Allison Agency from Margaret Allison, his widow,
in 1966.
“We have been a family operation since our inception. Every member of our agency is either family or treated as such,” Mechling said. “I feel this instills loyalty and integrity in both our employees
and clientele. These are rare attributes when you
consider the atmosphere of today’s business world.”
“From the beginning, we pledged to provide the
best coverage available through companies that
share our philosophy and that are financially stable
and enduring. The agency sells life, property and
casualty insurance, annuities, IRAs, surety bonds
and Roth IRAs as well as offering superior service
to all our clients. We are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday

“We give the public access to superior A-rated
companies coupled with an educated and dedicated
staff, which is ready, willing and able to provide the
recommendations and service necessary for our
client’s protection in today’s complicated market.
We are extremely proud that we are beginning our
46th year representing the Erie Insurance Group.
We extend many thanks to our clientele, past, present and future. Our educated, experienced and dedicated staff is here to service your insurance needs.”
The staff is comprised of family members
William G. Mechling, president and CEO, 46 years;
Darla J. Mechling, secretary/treasurer, 46 years;
LeAnne M. Phoebus, office manager and co-secretary/treasurer, 28 years; S. Mark Phoebus, general
manager and first vice president, 24 years. Debbie
Russell, 11 years; and Desiree Huber, in her first
year, complete the staff.
Our daughters, LeAnne and Lori, have worked at
our agency during summer breaks from college.
Lori lives in Cooksville, Md., with her husband,
Dan Mensing, and their children Connor and Kathleen. LeAnne and her husband, Mark Phoebus, and
their children, Kaitlyn, Samuel and Timothy, have at
one time or another helped “Poppy” at the office.
“The public wants and deserves companies that
are financially stable, coupled with the superior
services of an agency that is both willing and capable of serving their insurance needs. Our affiliation
with Erie Insurance, along with the propagation of
our agency with family members, shows our dedication to fulfilling those needs. Our hope is for the
continued growth of the agency and expansion in
direct proportion to the demands and needs of our
present and growing clientele.”

Tony’s Small Engine Repair
Tony’s Small Engine Repair provides equipment to
meet all of your lawn and garden needs.
With three generations of lawn care experience, the
business is very knowledgeable in the industry. Involved
in the day-to-day operations are owner Tony Zook, who
handles new equipment and parts sales; his wife Erma,
who is expecting their third child in July; two sons,
Jalon, 6, and Tyler, 3; and Zook’s sister-in-law Yolanda,
who helps with the books, stocks shelves and assembles
equipment. Zook also employs two part-time mechanics.
Tony’s stocks string trimmers, chainsaws, blowers,
chippers, mowers and more by Stihl, Hustler, and BCS.
Zook also carries Honda power equipment.
“We are an elite Stihl dealer and have plans to become factory gold-level certified by the end of the
year,” said Zook. This includes completion of a threeday training at the factory in Virginia Beach.
“My business is unique in that I try to sell a very
high-quality product at reasonable prices, and I want to
give everyone the time and service they deserve when
they make a purchase here.”
Zook started the business in 2002 in a 14-by-24-foot
building that served as an office, showroom and work
area. In 2005, he got married and moved his business to
Route 403; and in 2008, he renovated the basement of a
barn for more room. This year, he moved to a new building in Clymer. Along Routes 403 and 286, it has a bigger showroom and work area.
“My wife Erma is a great support to me,” said Zook.
“She helps with bookwork, but more than that, she is an
awesome wife and mom to our boys. Without her, a very
large part would be missing here.
“I want to keep my family involved in the business as
much as possible. As our boys Jalon and Tyler grow up,
our goal is that they first serve God. Our desire is to
honor our Savior in this community by operating an
honest and friendly business.”
Twolick Valley Nursery and Gift Shoppe
Twolick Valley Nursery and Gift Shoppe features
more than 200 varieties of trees and shrubs, perennials and annual flowers, vegetable plants and mulch
in its gift shop and garden center.
Involved in the family business are Justin and
Amanda Kaskan, Don and Becky Kaskan, Ted
Kaskan, Kathy Yerep, and the family’s dogs, Shooter
and Josie.
“After Justin graduated from Penn State in 2006
with a degree in forest science and forest technology, he returned to the family farm to start his dream
– Twolick Valley Nursery and Gift Shoppe,” said
Amanda Kaskan.
His parents, Don and Becky, helped him from the
start and he opened the doors of the business in the
spring of 2007. He met his soon-to-be-wife, Amanda, at Penn State in 2007 and after she graduated, she
moved to Indiana to help him with the business.
In 2008, they added a garden center and water
feature. In 2009, they added a tree retail center and
another water feature, and in 2011, a new greenhouse. This season, they have added a topsoil building so they always have dry, screened topsoil available and they’ve extended their shade canopy to accommodate their growing selection of Japanese
Maples.
“Twolick Valley Nursery would not exist without
family” Amanda said.
“The family that works here works so hard because we want the best for each other. And the families that shop here are some of the best customers
any business could have.”
“A lot of people come to us as strangers and leave
as almost family.”

Indiana Gazette Family Business, Friday, June 15, 2012— 11
~ Our Calling ~
To render the highest type of service to humanity
in its hour of greatest need.
~ Our Goal ~
to render that service so
completely that every detail,
however small, is promptly
taken care of, so thoughtfully
that the burden of sorrow is
made lighter.
We are grateful to our friends and the community, who have repeatedly
looked to us for fairness and compassion.
Good men and women, our careers committed to helping people, make
up our staff. We have gained the respect of the community through our
professional competence and superior performance.
We are proud to be Indiana’s oldest family-owned funeral home and the
leaders in the funeral service since 1891.

Tate’s Supermarket
Tate’s Supermarket is a family-owned supermarket
known for “the best meats in the area,” featuring produce, bakery, deli and grocery departments. Main
office services include money orders, utility payments,
gift cards, check cashing and lottery.
The supermarket began as a meat-packing company
in Arcadia in 1906. It operated there for 20 years before
Albert, Carl, Frank and Anthony “Pete” Tate opened a
store, The Original Tate Brothers, at 5 Franklin St.,
Clymer.
Peter remained in Clymer and operated the store
before turning it over to his three sons: George,
Anthony Jr. and William “Skip” Tate.
George and Anthony stayed in the business and
helped create the present Tate’s Supermarket. Additions
to the store were made in the 1950s and 1960s, and the
brothers built and moved to the present location in
December 1976, only to be flooded in July 1977. The
store reopened three days later.
Today, the business is owned by Denise Tate Packer
and George Tate. Other family members are Stacie
Tate, Mark Tate and Tom Thornton. Special employees
with 10 years or more of service are Frank Petro, Betty
Kelly, Dan Janosko, Bob Peace, Sharon Shulty, Carrie
McAdoo, Cindy Polosky, Mary Jane Mattis, Lisa
Nyland, Alice Greer, Wanda Myers, Levi Ankeny and
Nancy Geary.
“We have a strong commitment to continuing the Tate
name and heritage,” said owner George Tate. “As an
independent company, we strive to control our own
destiny and be successful in endeavors, present and
future.”
“We will never forget our heritage, where we began
and how far we have come,” George Tate said. “For
over 100 years the Tate name has become a symbol of
trust and pride in our community. We owe our success
to family, loyal friends and customers and will never
compromise the welfare of our customers in light of
our own success.”
