The shop was founded in 1985 by Donna Stewart. Her love of costumes, vintage hats and historical patterns were the discerning force behind her decision to open a business, said her son Bill Strong. With the help of her patient husband, Ken Stewart, they created The Costume Shop. Now, 27 years later, her son runs the store with the help of family and friends. “The Costume Shop is open year-round and with a strong Internet presence, we have enjoyed steady growth,” said Strong. “Our repeat customers are our most valued commodity. These include schools from all over Pennsylvania, theater groups, clubs and organizations. We boost over 3,000 rental costumes on site and specialize in holiday characters like Santa and the Easter bunny.” “Our accessory selection will astound you — wall after wall of wigs, practical jokes, makeup, hats and much, much more.” “There is something for everyone at The Costume Shop,” Strong said. “Having a murder mystery? We can help. Having a birthday party? How excited will your little one be when their favorite cartoon character walks into the party?” “So stop in and join us for our 27th Halloween in Indiana,” Strong said. And remember: “It’s More Fun in a Costume!” Hildebrand’s Mowers and Saws Hildebrand’s Mowers and Saws specializes in the sales and service of small gasoline engine products. In 1978, the Hildebrands purchased the business from its original owner, Homer George. Mr. and Mrs. C. Fred Hildebrand sold the business to Charles and Cathy Hildebrand in 1985. “We have been servicing small gas-powered engines in Indiana for 30 years with the help of two of the finest mechanics in the county, Ralph Henry and Robert Conrad,” said the owners. It allows Hildebrand’s to not only service what they sell but also service many other brands. “Our son Steven graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in small business management,” said Charles and Cathy. “He is working full time at the shop with his wife, Erin, and they hope to take over the business. Son Joseph graduated from Penns Manor High School and will be attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania this fall majoring in history education. He will also be helping out with the family business. “Grandpa C. Fred still stays involved helping around the shop, and we continue to explore new equipment ideas to find what will work best in Indiana County,” the Hildebrands said of the future. “God has provided us with a small business here in Indiana County and he has blessed us immensely. It is our prayer that he will allow us to continue in order to provide support for any of our four children who wish to continue in the business.” “Stop out and see the new lines of equipment displayed in our showroom.” Culligan Water Address: 1749 Wilson Ave., Indiana Phone: (724) 465-5611 Culligan Water has been serving Indiana County for over 65 years since the original dealership opened on Locust Street in 1946. In 1975, the business was relocated to 1749 Wilson Avenue where it is owned and operated today by Brad Schry. Schry is the second generation “Culligan Man.” He purchased the business in 1984 and operates it with 13 employees including his son Cody, who is taking time off to attend the University of Pittsburgh. The business sells and rents water treatment equipment and delivers bottled water, water coolers, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, water softeners and salt. Nationwide, and here in Indi- ana, Culligan is the premier leader in the water treatment industry, Schry said. “It is the dedication of our employees who provide that famous ‘Hey Culligan Man’ service that has kept our customer base growing every year for the past 28 years.” “The amazing features on our current lineup of water treatment equipment Culligan is now manufacturing has the highest efficiency ratings on salt and water usage of anything on the market right now. And the equipment is priced lower than most of our competition as well.” “Our customers also appreciate our new line of ‘bottle-free’ water coolers that eliminate the need for water deliveries and storage of five-gallon bottles.” 4 — Indiana Gazette Family Business, Friday, June 15, 2012 Debnar’s Pools, Spas, Lawn and Garden Debnar’s specializes in pool, spa, and lawn and garden equipment. They carry Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, Gravely and Stihl equipment. Lloyd and Linda Debnar started the company in 1983, based on the principle that pools and spas should be fun, not work. Over the years, they have been joined by their daughter and son-in-law as well as many “adopted” family members. Most recently, they have expanded their Indiana location on Shelly Drive to right next door to the previous Indiana location. Both stores offer the same services and specials. Joe Cook has owned the company since 1998 and has been working with all types of water treatment equipment in this area for nearly 30 years. Cook’s company is a certified dealer of Kinetico Water Systems, which are 100% American made, “unlike our competitors,” said Cook. “Kinetico water systems have the best manufacture’s warranty and are the leading brand for non-electric systems.” “I’ve been installing Kinetico nonelectric water systems now for nearly 15 years, and I can honestly tell you that we do less service work on these systems,” Cook said. “We are the only professionals that offer more than one brand of equipment. If you want the facts on electric compared to non-electric, give us a call.” Cook started his business in a small building in Shelocta. Progress over the last few years required him to move to a bigger building, located on Route 422 beside the BP gas station, where the business now services Indiana, Armstrong, Westmoreland and Jefferson counties. Cory Scrips (Cook’s son-in-law) is the sales manager, Kathy Jo Scrips (Cook’s daughter) is the office manager and Justin Cook (Cook’s son) works in service. “I feel good knowing that the business will continue in good hands long after I'm gone,” Cook said. “My family is just as passionate about this business as I am.” “We are a very close family here at H2O Restoration. We enjoy taking care of families and businesses every day, being able to give them the best quality of water possible. It’s our guarantee.” Henry Hall Office Products Henry Hall Technical Services Address: 708 Philadelphia St., Indiana Phone: (724) 463-9111 Website: www.henryhall.com “We’ve been in business since 1866,” said owner Jeffrey Tobin. “People ask us how we are able to thrive so well in the midst of such fierce competition. Our answer: The competition has to compete with US!” “Price is no longer the issue,” he said. “It’s a level playing field today and our prices are as good or better than anyone’s. The real issue is service, and no one can compete with us in the service arena. We deliver where people want it. We assemble and install furniture. In fact, we can deliver thousands more items next day than any of the national companies. People get duped by national advertising and think the best deal is elsewhere. I will challenge anyone to the “best value” contest against any of our major national competitors. If I lose, I’ll buy lunch,” Tobin said. “Our copier company continues to grow as well. In fact, this year will be our biggest in recent history. Quality machines and highly trained technicians are critical, but we are also local, so down time is kept to a minimum. No one has to drive in from Pittsburgh or Greensburg to work on your machine.” “We are also authorized to service many other office machines, such as shredders, printers, fax machines and even typewriters.” “I urge everyone to compare us to the competition so they can see what they’ve been missing. We’re local, pay local taxes and hire local people who also build our local economy.” “How can people do business locally? Just ask us.” 6 — Indiana Gazette Family Business, Friday, June 15, 2012 Address: Blairsville Address: 9115 Highway 422 West, Indiana Phone: (724) 248-9433 Phone: (724) 354-3994 Website: lukciksloghomes.com Website: www.mumaudiesel.com Lukcik’s Log Homes Lukcik’s Log Homes is a custom, handcrafted Scandanavian full scribe log home builder. “We have been in the log home industry crafting log structures since 1987,” said family member Mark Lukcik. “Lukcik’s Log Homes will never be the largest producer. The reason is simple — we don’t want to be. We are not interested in mass production. Our goal is to design and build the finest structures in the industry at affordable prices.” “It requires energy, enthusiasm and careful planning,” he said. “That’s the way we like to build and that’s why we refer to our customers by name, not by number.” The Lukciks had one of their homes featured in the May 2011 Log Home Living magazine and in the 2012 “Best Homes of the Year” special edition of the same magazine. “We have grown to be more than just a log home builder. We have also have done numerous rustic conventional homes and commercial projects.” Mark Lukcik and his wife Robin own the company. Mark is in charge of the bidding and construction of the projects while Robin takes care of the books. As their children Justin and Amber get older, they help when needed. We are hoping to add two mechanics and an office employee soon.” “When Lenny decided to quit the trucking business as an over-the-road trucker and start a parts store, he never imagined he would have three of his four sons and two grandsons involved in the business,” said one family member. “He is very proud and pleased at what his family has accomplished.” Mechling Insurance Address: 1359 Philadelphia St., Indiana Phone: (724) 465-4261 Website: www.mechlinginsurance.com Mechling Insurance offers life, property and casualty insurance, annuities, IRAs, surety bonds and Roth IRAs. We are grateful to our friends and the community, who have repeatedly looked to us for fairness and compassion. Good men and women, our careers committed to helping people, make up our staff. We have gained the respect of the community through our professional competence and superior performance. We are proud to be Indiana’s oldest family-owned funeral home and the leaders in the funeral service since 1891. Richard T. Wolfe, Jr. Owner/Supervisor 36 N. Seventh St., Indiana www.robinsonlytleinc.com 724-349-9700 12 — Indiana Gazette Family Business, Friday, June 15, 2012 Tate’s Supermarket Tate’s Supermarket is a family-owned supermarket known for “the best meats in the area,” featuring produce, bakery, deli and grocery departments. Main office services include money orders, utility payments, gift cards, check cashing and lottery. The supermarket began as a meat-packing company in Arcadia in 1906. It operated there for 20 years before Albert, Carl, Frank and Anthony “Pete” Tate opened a store, The Original Tate Brothers, at 5 Franklin St., Clymer. Peter remained in Clymer and operated the store before turning it over to his three sons: George, Anthony Jr. and William “Skip” Tate. George and Anthony stayed in the business and helped create the present Tate’s Supermarket. Additions to the store were made in the 1950s and 1960s, and the brothers built and moved to the present location in December 1976, only to be flooded in July 1977. The store reopened three days later. Today, the business is owned by Denise Tate Packer and George Tate. Other family members are Stacie Tate, Mark Tate and Tom Thornton. Special employees with 10 years or more of service are Frank Petro, Betty Kelly, Dan Janosko, Bob Peace, Sharon Shulty, Carrie McAdoo, Cindy Polosky, Mary Jane Mattis, Lisa Nyland, Alice Greer, Wanda Myers, Levi Ankeny and Nancy Geary. “We have a strong commitment to continuing the Tate name and heritage,” said owner George Tate. “As an independent company, we strive to control our own destiny and be successful in endeavors, present and future.” “We will never forget our heritage, where we began and how far we have come,” George Tate said. “For over 100 years the Tate name has become a symbol of trust and pride in our community. We owe our success to family, loyal friends and customers and will never compromise the welfare of our customers in light of our own success.” Address: 120 Fourth St., Clymer Phone: (724) 254-4420 Contact: Denise Packer
