Escondido Union School District’s Fifth Grade Hygiene and Middle School Family Life Education Program California Education Code (EC Sections 51930-51939) • HIV/AIDS prevention instruction shall occur at least once in middle school and once in high school. • HIV/AIDS instruction shall include: the nature of HIV/AIDS and it’s effects on the body, HIV transmission, methods to reduce HIV transmission, including both abstinence and condoms, public health issues associated with HIV/AIDS, and local resources for HIV testing and medical care. • HIV/AIDS prevention instruction is mandated, while comprehensive sexual health is authorized, but not required. EUSD Board Policy 6142.1 Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Instruction (2009) • The board desires to provide a well-planned sequence of instruction on comprehensive sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention. • Beginning in grade 7, instruction and materials shall teach that abstinence from sexual intercourse is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, while also providing medically accurate information on other methods of prevention.
