Writer and artist Edward Gorey (1925–2000) is best known for his illustrated books. Long before the days of the graphic novel, his books were created with adults in mind, though many have been quite popular with children as well. No matter which audience he was actually aiming at, Gorey’s work alway had a playfully dark and sardonic quality. Typically set in the Victorian era—picture the late 1800s—his books have intriguing titles, such as the Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Hapless Child, and The Doubtful Guest . In them, odd characters such as solemn, formally dressed gentlemen, impoverished outcasts, and weepy, doleful young women often meet with ghastly fates, such as being embedded in ice or swept out to sea. Following his death, friends found a number of unpublished works among Gorey’s belongings. Assuming that no legal issues hamper the process, this development suggests that further books might be published posthumously .
