Note
There is too little space for us to
include the extracts used for these
contextual questions in this book.
Do not worry, though: in an
examination or test, you will get
copies of the extracts for
contextual questions.
Did you know?
The following words and phrases
are often found in contextual
questions. Make sure you
understand what examiners want
you to do when they give you
these instructions.
Account for: explain the reason
for something.
Comment on: give your opinion
on something (your opinion must
be based on the text).
Explain: say what something
means.
Give your opinion: say what you
think. For these questions there is
no single right answer, but you
must support your ideas with
events or dialogue from the play.
You will not get any marks for
saying that you agree or disagree
with something; you will get marks
for supporting your opinions with
quotes or facts.
Place this extract in context: say
what happens just before, and
sometimes just after, this extract in
the play (in other words, you
should not say anything about
what happens in the extract). This
shows that you know the story.
Substantiate: give reasons from
the play to show that what you say
is true.
Give a synonym: give a word with
the same meaning.
Quote: write down the exact
words used in the passage, using
quotation marks, for example:
“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art
thou Romeo?”
