Equipment and software
Detailed equipment lists are finalized prior to the start of each program. Students are responsible for purchasing all required equipment and materials before the first day of class. Software upgrades released after the program starts may not be included in the curriculum. Academic policy
Student responsibilities
Students must be prepared to invest significant time and energy in attending class and completing assignments. Students are expected to participate actively in class, complete homework assignments on time, and meet all other responsibilities. Students in the DAC program are responsible for the following:  Actively attending and participating in class  Completing all class assignments in a timely manner and without help from other students (unless such help is part of the assignment)  Maintaining a good learning atmosphere by cooperating with instructors and classmates  Observing all requirements described in the School Conduct Policy and Attendance Policy  Promptly notifying the Program Advisor, administrators, or the director when there are problems Students who do not meet these responsibilities may be subject to dismissal from the program.
Student conduct
The UC San Diego community includes students, staff, faculty, and others who have a vested interest in the University. UC San Diego Extension students are a part of the larger University of California system and are expected to follow the UC systemwide and UC San Diego campus policies. The UC San Diego Student Conduct Code (http://students.ucsd.edu/student‐life/_organizations/student‐conduct/regulations/22.00.html) underscores the values that define our community and include the UC San Diego Principles of Community which further describe the expectations of all members of our community. This Code sets forth the applicable standards of our community and authorizes the administration of student conduct at UC San Diego Extension. The Code applies to all UC San Diego undergraduate, graduate, professional school and Extension students. Additionally, the Code also applies to applicants who become students, for alleged violations committed as part of the application process; applicants who become students, for alleged violations committed on campus and/or while participating in university‐supported activities that take place following a student's submittal of the application through his or her official enrollment; and former students for alleged violations committed while a student. In addition, Extension students are responsible to follow the UC San Diego Extension Academic Integrity Policy (http://extension.ucsd.edu/student/pdf/academicIntegrityPolicy.pdf) which administers all instances of academic misconduct including, but not limited to, plagiarizing, cheating on exams, and improper or missing citations. Reports of alleged violations involving sex offenses, including sexual assault and sexual misconduct, will be handled under the policies and procedures described in the UC San Diego Student Sex Offenses Policy (http://ophd.ucsd.edu/pdf/2009FinalDraftUCSDStudentSexOffensePolicy.pdf). For further information on the procedures implementing these policies, contact: Elizabeth Silva: (858) 534‐5798 easilva@ucsd.edu 9500 Gilman Drive M/C 0176‐H La Jolla, CA 92093‐0176 Digital Arts Center Student Handbook 2013‐2014 7
Disruptive behavior
Attempts to engage in or aid in conduct that violates the University's community standards may be subject to action under the processes outlined in the UC San Diego Student Conduct Code. The Code applies to all UC San Diego undergraduate, graduate, professional school, and Extension students. For more information, visit http://students.ucsd.edu/student‐life/_organizations/student‐
conduct/regulations/22.00.html. Attendance policy The program schedules in this Handbook outline the required courses, as well as days and times of classroom activity. Your instructors will provide you with more detailed course outlines once the program begins. Attending class is required, not optional, and our attendance policy will be enforced: students are expected to attend all class meetings.  You can’t learn if you do not attend class  You can’t participate if you do not attend class  You can’t earn academic credit if you do not attend class  You will not earn a certificate or graduate from the program if you do not attend class. How absences are counted
Instructors will take attendance twice per class meeting. Instructors will factor your attendance into your attendance/participation grade for the class. Student attendance is recorded as follows:  In Attendance: present for full class session (full credit)  Partial: present only for part of class (1/2 credit)  Absent: not present (no credit) We do not differentiate between “excused” or “not excused” absences. Academic Probation
We strive to maintain a learning environment that fosters educational, professional, and personal growth. Your presence is vital to accomplishing this, and regular attendance benefits both the individual and the entire class. Students who miss three (3) full days or an equivalent combination of partial days in any one quarter will be placed on Academic Probation for the remainder of the program. Students placed on Academic Probation will be notified by email. A copy of this email will be placed in the student’s file. In addition, being placed on Academic Probation may require a meeting with the Director, Faculty Advisor, and/or Program Representative. Students placed on Academic Probation who subsequently miss more than two (2) full days or an equivalent combination of partial days during the remainder of the program may be dismissed with no refund, and either the student will be dropped from all coursework or may be assigned a “F” (fail) grade, based on whether the student had a passing or failing grade at the time of dismissal (per UC San Diego policy). Digital Arts Center Student Handbook 2013‐2014 8
Refund and withdrawal policy Students may withdraw from DAC programs at the start of each quarter with the following refund:  Withdrawal by the end of the second week of class: 75% refund  Withdrawal by the end of the third week of class: 50% refund  Withdrawal by the end of the fourth week of class: 25% refund Please note: Equipment, software, textbooks, late fees, and discounts are not eligible for refund. Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing to a Digital Arts staff member. Petitions for refunds filed beyond the above deadlines are approved only under the following circumstances:  Compulsory military service (proof required)  Sudden serious medical condition that substantially limits school participation  Administrative error (i.e. enrolled in the wrong course/program). All students petitioning for a refund after a late withdrawal must provide documentation to support their petition. In the case of a medical withdrawal, we require a recent doctor’s note on business letterhead specifying the type and extent of the illness, as well as the first date required to be absent and the date the student will be able to return to school. UC San Diego Extension reserves the right to refuse requests for medical withdrawal if the documentation does not meet our criteria. All petitions for medical withdrawal must be sent to the following address before the end of the quarter in which you are enrolled: UC San Diego Extension Digital Arts Center University City Center 6256 Greenwich Drive, Suite 100 San Diego, CA 92122 Students should allow three to four weeks for refunds to be processed. Grading policies
Students who pass all courses with a “C” or better will receive their Certificate after all grades are submitted at the end of the program. A Certificate will not be issued to students who do not pass all courses with a “C” or better. Students who do not maintain a “C” or better average may be placed on Academic Probation. In order to receive a Professional Certificate from UC San Diego Extension Digital Arts Center, students must maintain a “C” grade or better in all required courses.  Absence from class and tardiness  Late assignments  Assignments not completed to specification, incomplete assignments, and/or assignments improperly submitted to the instructor  Submission of work that is not your own and/or copied from another source. Each instructor is responsible for defining the course grading policies in his or her syllabus. UC San Diego Extension supports the instructor’s right to assign grades based on work performed in class, assignments submitted and results of quizzes/exams. Students who believe their grade has been determine by means other than the work submitted should follow the procedure for disputing a grade. More information about grade appeal can be found here: http://extension.ucsd.edu/student/index.cfm?vaction=faq#gradeappeals Incomplete grades
Instructors have the option of assigning an “I” (incomplete) grade when a student's work is of non‐failing quality but incomplete due to circumstances beyond the student's control. Legitimate reasons include a documented medical illness or compulsory military service. An incomplete may not be used to retake the course or allow additional time for a student who has fallen behind without a legitimate cause. Students who receive an incomplete grade must agree in writing to complete all assignments within a specific period of time. If a student completes all assignments to the satisfaction of the instructor, the instructor may change the incomplete grade to a full letter grade. “I” grades that have not been changed by the instructor within one quarter will be converted to a permanent “F” (failing grade). Certificates
Certificates documenting successful completion of the Professional Certificate program will be mailed to students after all grades have been finalized. Certificates will be mailed to the address listed in the student’s MyExtension account.
Students who pass all courses with a “C” or better will receive a UC San Diego Extension Professional Certificate at the end of the program. A Certificate will not be issued to students who do not pass all courses with a “C” or better. Students who do not maintain a “C” average during the program may be asked to withdraw. Recognition Upon completion of the twelve‐month curriculum, students will participate in a closing celebration. This catered event includes social time for photos and exchange of personal information. Digital Arts Center Student Handbook 2013‐2014 10

Throughout the DAC program, students are coached on techniques for resume creation and tips for interviewing, and offered advice by working industry professionals. Internships and externships are generally available to students during the third and fourth quarters. Eligible students must have maintained an average grade of “B” or better during the first two quarters of the program. We are frequently contacted by companies in the San Diego area that are seeking interns. As internships arise, students will be given opportunities to express interest. All interested students must send up‐to‐date resumes and portfolios to the DAC staff prior to being considered. To discuss internship possibilities, eligible students may request a meeting with a Digital Arts Center staff member. Longstanding relationships We work hard to establish and maintain relationships with a wide variety of companies, and we work as the liaison between all students and these companies. We ask you to be respectful of these relationships and to represent yourself and the Digital Arts Center programs in a positive light. Internship quality We monitor internships at the halfway and completion stages. Final evaluations will be sent to you and your supervisor prior to the completion of your internship. If you would like to receive UC San Diego Extension transcript credit for an internship, you must complete 100 hours with no pay. Students should not accept unpaid internships that do not carry academic credit. For more information, contact a Digital Arts Center staff member. Digital Arts Center Student Handbook 2013‐2014 11

Students who believe their grade has been determined by means other than the work submitted should follow the procedure for disputing a grade.
Students who receive an incomplete grade must agree in writing to complete all assignments within a specified period of time. If a student completes all assignments to the satisfaction of the instructor, the instructor may change the incomplete grade to a full letter grade. “I” grades that have not been changed by the instructor within one quarter will be converted to a permanent “F” (failing grade).
