National Council Committee - General Overviews
Audit & Finance—Chaired by the national secretary. Reviews the audited finances of the society. Advises the Council on
budget and investment decisions and is responsible for seeing to Alpha Chi’s overall financial stability. Reviews and
approves committee recommendations with financial implications. Proposes the chapter convention subsidies and changes
the rate of regional rebates. Solicits professional review of AX investments every 2 years. Reviews Alpha Chi’s annual
990 informational return. Determines if all financial votes of the Council have been implemented.
Awards & Honors—Selects the winner of the President’s Cup for the nation’s outstanding chapter through judging of
chapter portfolios. Reviews quarterly nominations for honorary membership and recommends nominees to the Council for
election. As needed, recommends the establishment of new awards or changes to existing awards programs. This
committee has historically been the one to review distinguished alumni nominations, as well.
Chapter Development—Coordinates programming to recruit, revive, and strengthen local chapters. Helps develop action
plans for regional workshops and coordinates the national convention’s chapter development events. Each summer crafts
an annual chapter development initiative and plans methods to encourage sponsor and student involvement.
Convention—Chaired by the national vice president. Each summer, helps to plan the national convention, including
decisions about overall theme and tone, speakers, new or city-specific events, implementation of the national service
project, and cultural choices for free time. Offers formal resolutions of appreciation at each national convention and then
conveys written expressions of appreciation to significant program personalities.
Member Development—Assists the National Office throughout the year in collecting data from and communicating
effectively with members. Annually considers membership benefits, including affinity programs and Active Alumni-only
benefits. Coordinates with the Convention Committee to develop current student enrichment and alumni events at the
annual convention.
Scholarships—Chaired by the national secretary. Nine faculty members divided into three academically diverse
subcommittees select recipients of the Gaston/Nolle Scholarships, Sledge/Benedict Fellowships, and Pryor Fellowships
annually. The review process begins electronically in February and concludes at the convention, often involving early
arrival to the hotel. Considers scholarship policies and procedures and makes recommendations for changes.
Strategic Planning—Considers the future of Alpha Chi and recommends direction-setting policy to the Council.
Annually reviews the current strategic plan and brings a new plan to the Council for approval every three years. Among
other members, the executive officers serve on this committee.
In addition to the above committees, the president may create ad hoc committees as needs arise. At this time, there are
the following ad hoc committees:
Constitution
Institutional Standards
Publications
Regional/National Structure
Electronic Council Meetings
Any committee may present an item for Council consideration monthly. On the first Friday of each month, items submitted to
office@alphachihonor.org will be emailed collectively to the Council. Electronic discussion using reply-all will continue for one
week. On the second Friday of the month, each Council member will receive via email a private ballot to be cast by the following
Monday.
Any committee wishing to propose an action with financial implications should submit the recommendation to the Audit & Finance
Committee (email to: lmills@milligan.edu) 30 days before the action is to be considered by the Council. The committee will review
the proposal, consulting with the national office as needed, and return an opinion within 14 days.
To maintain high-quality records, at the annual national convention each committee chair should submit a written report to the Council
of all committee actions since the previous convention.
