Miss Yodis' 100th Day activities included… questionnaires, poetry, journal writing, and what else? COUNTING! Miss Ehrlich’s children created webs on animal habitats. Derek! Derek! Derek! In Miss Watts’s class, children couldn’t keep their pencils off the paper when it came to writing about their favorite people! Who knew biographies could be so much fun? Mrs. Schuman's students are loving March! Leprechauns, shamrocks, gold...OH MY! Page 9 JUMPIN’ GYM February was Healthy Heart Month. During physical education, the children learned about the heart and why it is important to take care of it. They know that to keep their hearts healthy they need to eat healthy foods and exercise. During the month of February, the children were also engaged in Olympic events. They did cross country skiing, figure skating, luge, skeleton, speed skating, and many more winter sports. In March, the children went outside whenever the weather allowed. Going outside and moving is a lot of fun! The Physical Education Department also started a school wide program called, “The Wing Shoe Tying challenge.” We encourage you to assist your children in learning this difficult task. Remember, the more you practice, the better you will become! Page 10 Music Notes During the months of February and March, first graders listened to and learned about very familiar pieces that were composed by Mozart and Handel, such as “A Little Night Music” and “Handel’s Messiah”. Not only are the first grade classes singing and expanding their music repertoire, but they are learning and practicing sign language for many of the songs. Congratulations to all the first graders who performed in a wonderful winter concert! Kindergarten students have been studying and singing many songs from places around the world, such as Japan and Africa. They have been creating different movements to the steady beat of the songs while singing by themselves or as a group. Kindergarten classes have been practicing and working hard for their concert coming up in April. ART ANGELS First grade students were inspired by Asian art and created their own interpretation! They learned all about China, Japan, and India and painted bamboo trees with bamboo paint brushes. Together, the students created Asian bamboo artwork. In February, first graders learned all about birch trees and sponge painted them to create a masterpiece. In March, they painted on canvases that will be permanently displayed in Wing’s cafeteria! In April, students will learn about Claude Monet and sponge paint a water scene to resemble Monet's famous pond. Kindergarten students learned all about Frida Kahlo, the first women artist to have her own art show in Mexico. She had many self-portraits in her show and kindergarteners created their our own self-portraits using a mirror! In February, they discussed things that live under the sea and each created their own under water scene with crayon resistance and watercolors. In April, kindergarten students will learn about Charles Demuth and incorporate numbers into their art work. Page 11 Life in the Library In February, the students at Wing learned how the tradition of Groundhog Day evolved. They shared stories about the groundhog and discussed what it meant to predict whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow. Other themes discussed were Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and the character trait of Honesty, which reinforced how important it is to tell the truth. In March, students were busy learning about Music in our Schools, National Poetry Month, St. Patrick’s Day, and an author study of Doreen Cronin. The students were excited to read one of their favorite books by this author, Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type. April will be an exciting month in the library, as students will discuss the themes of April Fool’s Day, Earth Day, and the life cycle of a duck, which will coincide with the arrival of the duck eggs during the week of April 12th. Computer Lab In February, both kindergarten and first graders used the Promethean Board to demonstrate their math skills and to celebrate the 100th Day of School. The kindergarten classes counted to 100 by using the magic pen to roll dice and move a checker across a number chart. First graders used the magic pen to select different coins to count to 100 cents. Also, both grades used Safari Montage to watch a movie about the Chinese New Year. In March, kindergarten and first grade classes used Safari Montage and Starfall to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Both grades continue to use Award and Harcourt to improve their reading skills. Page 12 The children LOVE participating during interactive reading activities on the Promethean Board! A night for family and fun! Page 13 Page 14 The Cat in the Hat Mrs. Wildenauer and Miss Falanga, the reading specialists at Wing, each dressed-up as The Cat in the Hat and made surprise appearances to every classroom in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. The children enjoyed listening to a story read by The Cat in the Hat and they were even able to ask him a few questions! Page 15 Jose Aruego The letter M became a mouse! Mr. Aruego showed students how to turn the number five into a shark! A half circle became a cheetah! Even the teachers enjoyed drawing! Page 16 Health Fair I AM HEALTHY!
