A political ideology originated by Benito Mussolini
became dictator of Italy in 1922. It is Characterized by the
following:
T Strong central government
T Usually headed by a dictator
T Government completely controls political
parties, industry and labour, cultural,

up Germany’s Third Reich.
(K)Appeasement(page 194-197) Letting someone do what they
want instead of trying to stop them because you are afraid of
what they might do.
ie It is a policy of accepting the imposed conditions of an
aggressor instead of armed resistance, usually you have to
sacrifice your principles , or some of them, to follow this policy.
This is often referred to Hitler and how he was treated in
Europe. Hitler was the aggressor and he imposed conditions on
the rest of Europe. He told European countries what he wanted
in order for him to stop taking over other countries. They gave
in and gave him what he wanted so there would not be another
war. The European countries appeases Hitler.
4.1.2
(K)Why did many Canadian favour the policy of
appeasement?Page 190
They favoured an international policy of isolationalism or non
involvement in European affairs. Many Canadian lives were lost
fighting in WW1 for a cause that had no affect on Canadian
Soil. For these reasons Canadians were willing to appease Hitler
by letting him take many parts of Europe under his control.
4.1.3
(A) determine why the early defeat of Western Europe affected
the role of Canada in the Second World War. (Page 204)
Canada was a still a minor player internationally before WW2
however, when Europe was taken over by Germany (all except
Great Britain) this changed. Europe was destroyed and
conquered by Hitler. It had forced the Allied troops from the
continent of Europe. Someone had to step up and fight along
side of Great Britain to gain control of European soil. This role
fell to Canada.
