Canadian History Notes Unit 4 Canada, World War 2 and it’s Aftermath 4.1 Student will be expected to examine Canada’s involvement in World War 2. 4.1.1 (K)Define Fascism: (Page 198) A political ideology originated by Benito Mussolini became dictator of Italy in 1922. It is Characterized by the following: T Strong central government T Usually headed by a dictator T Government completely controls political parties, industry and labour, cultural, religious and social activities T All opposition is suppressed T Usually marked by extreme nationalism, militarism and persecution of minorities and communists Hitler followed this example set by Mussolini when trying to set up Germany’s Third Reich. (K)Appeasement(page 194-197) Letting someone do what they want instead of trying to stop them because you are afraid of what they might do. ie It is a policy of accepting the imposed conditions of an aggressor instead of armed resistance, usually you have to sacrifice your principles , or some of them, to follow this policy. This is often referred to Hitler and how he was treated in Europe. Hitler was the aggressor and he imposed conditions on the rest of Europe. He told European countries what he wanted in order for him to stop taking over other countries. They gave in and gave him what he wanted so there would not be another war. The European countries appeases Hitler. 4.1.2 (K)Why did many Canadian favour the policy of appeasement?Page 190 They favoured an international policy of isolationalism or non involvement in European affairs. Many Canadian lives were lost fighting in WW1 for a cause that had no affect on Canadian Soil. For these reasons Canadians were willing to appease Hitler by letting him take many parts of Europe under his control. 4.1.3 (A) determine why the early defeat of Western Europe affected the role of Canada in the Second World War. (Page 204) Canada was a still a minor player internationally before WW2 however, when Europe was taken over by Germany (all except Great Britain) this changed. Europe was destroyed and conquered by Hitler. It had forced the Allied troops from the continent of Europe. Someone had to step up and fight along side of Great Britain to gain control of European soil. This role fell to Canada.
