Carbon Footprint Reduction Strategies for the Classroom

Carbon Footprint Reduction Strategies for the Classroom Significant improvement can be made by reducing, or better yet, eliminating the amount of paper used in the classroom. ‐A commitment to using Blackboard would make the classroom experience virtually paperless. For more information about Blackboard, visit: https://www.csupomona.edu/~elearning/blackboard_whatis.shtml. ‐ If Blackboard isn’t an option, follow these tips to cut down on the amount of paper and ink being wasted: ‐ expand your margins to 0.5 inches ‐ print on the front and back of each page ‐ use Ecofont to save up to 20% more ink (http://www.ecofont.com/ecofont_en.html) ‐ purchase refilled ink cartridges ‐ create a “re‐use paper pile” to print on the blank side of single‐side printed documents ‐ use smaller font and format paragraphs to single space ‐ print your name, date and assignment information in the header ‐ use recycled paper, preferably with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) logo ‐ use less colored ink—generally color ink cartridges are thrown away before all colors have been used ‐ change your settings to print in grayscale Make more sustainable decisions as a consumer. ‐ Purchase minimally packaged items that are recycled or refillable ‐ Although giant pen collections are impressive—they are not sustainable ‐ Use the PDA on your phone instead of purchasing a paper planner ‐ Purchase non‐toxic, refillable dry erase markers @ http://auspenmarkers.com/dry‐erase‐markers/ ‐ Re‐use backpacks, binders, folders, etc. ‐ Only plug in your laptop to recharge—a fully charged laptop will last throughout most classes ‐Buy used books and SELL them when they are no longer needed—try to keep a book in circulation for as long as possible ‐Purchase an older edition if you can’t find a used copy of a required text (they’re usually cheaper) Did you know that commuting students create 70.5% of CPP’s transportation related eCO2 emissions?i ‐ Get to know students in your class and find out if you can make a carpool buddy ‐ For short distances, take the two‐shoe express and walk to your destination ‐ For greater distances use the Campus shuttle or check‐out the University Rideshare program for students and faculty @ http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/parking/rideshare.asp Find your voice as an environmentally responsible student! ‐Become a Classroom Advocate for sustainability: http://cppthegreenteam.weebly.com/become‐a‐
classroom‐advocate.html. ‐ Attend the Green Team’s monthly Sustainability Forum and network with other concerned members of the Cal Poly Pomona community. ‐Be interactive! This info sheet is a living list. If you have more classroom suggestions, send us an email at cppgreeteam@gmail.com. Attend Green Team events and meetings to find out more about sustainability on campus and to meet people who are trying to make a difference.
