She fell in love with film editing and electronic editing in 1989 while earning her Bachelor of Science in Radio-TV-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. She left school early to follow work offers with every feature film she could in Texas and quickly become the most in demand Assistant Film Editor in Texas. In between films, she worked on every corporate project, commercial, TV show or special, and independent video she could get her hands on. And that is precisely the unique combination of work that sharpened her knowledge about video and video editing. Since 2000, she has focused her attention on the internet, her commercial property, her family, knowledge about affordable video editing software, and her classes covering affordable video editing software. She currently lives outside Austin, Texas with her love, Joe Vitale, and her kids: WolfieGirl, Virgil, Nona, Chelsea and Sandy. http://www.FreeVideoEditing.com http://www.TheVideoQueen.com From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 4 MAKE MONEY WITH THIS E-BOOK You can make 50% commission by selling this ebook from your website and/or email signature by becoming an affiliate. I was bored with the displays of high-end equipment. I was there to be with Nerissa. It wasn't until we came across a booth selling a James Bond-type gadget that I lit up. This little device was too much. It contained an MP3 player, audio recorder, digital camera, and video camcorder -- all in something a little thicker than a cigarette pack. I wanted one. Nerissa wanted one. The barker at the booth cut us a deal for both. Nerissa, being the Hollywood editor and visual genius that she is, began using the little device at once. She aimed it out the window of our 20th floor Venetian room. She took pictures out the back of our limo. She even filmed footage out the plane window as we headed back home from Vegas. Me, I didn't take the thing out of the box for almost two weeks. When I did, I found I loved the gadget. I love 007-things. I turned on the camera. I was sitting at my computer, so I took a picture of my monitor. I was sitting beside a window, so I took video of that. But then I was stumped. What else do you do with this thing? I'm a word guy. I write books. I read books. I live and breathe books. I don't think visually. Nerissa does. Not me. And then an idea hit me. I ran downstairs and told Nerissa, "I have an idea on how you can make some money !" "Tell me, tell me," she said. "Write a book on 99 things to do with your camcorder." "Huh?" From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 7 "I'm betting people would like ideas on what to do with their camcorder, or digital camera," I explained. "Most people just take pictures of their kids or their pets. They don't know how to be creative." Nerissa accepted my challenge. She even surpassed it. Instead of 99 things to do with your camcorder, she came up with 137+ things to do with one. And these are beauties. I laughed about loud at some of the ideas, cringed at a few, felt inspired by others, and saw even others were moneymakers. Some were fun, funny, strange, wild, different, and even profitable. For example -* SEND A VIDEO LETTER * SHOW THE VET WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT * PLAY "SPIN THE CAMERA" * MAKE A VIRAL VIDEO Anyway, I'm delighted Nerissa has finished this -book. e Now I finally know what to do with my James Bond gadget. Joe Vitale www.mrfire.com The Aiptek Pocket DV Digital Video Camcorder - 3100 is similar to what we bought in Las Vegas and currently sells for only $99 at Target. A featureilm. f A theatrical release. Roughly between 90-120 minutes long. These projects cost a lot to make and take a loooong time. If you are the type of person who can live, eat and breathe working on the same storyline for weeks, even months at a time -- then this project is for you. Otherwise, stick to being a care free audience member. Here is one resource for local film groups in your area, http://www.microcinema.com Buy and watch movies here: http://www.cinemanow.com/ & http://www.movieflix.com/ Buy and download movies here: http://www.movielink.com/ & http://www.transmissionfilms.com/ MAKE A SHORT FILM A film shorter than a theatrically released film. Usually between 30 seconds and 30 minutes. (Note: You no longer need to shoot on film to make a film.) Short films could require less money and time to make. But once you do, there are festivals to enter, and websites to host and sell your short films. http://www.undergroundfilm.org/ http://www.transmissionfilms.com/ From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 10 GET BUSINESS TESTIMONIALS When someone says something nice about your product or service, videotape them, and play it back for other potential customers on your website or on your promo tape or discs. You can also grab images for testimonials as well. (See above) Melissa with http://www.NutricianForTheSkin.com/Melissa stops by to tell Joe 'thank you' for his event, "Spiritual Marketing Super Summit." So of course we ask her for a testimonial! TAKE 30 PICTURES A SECOND Because video records 30 frames a second, and because it's easy to grab frames and save them as images, one can use a video camera for the purpose of acquiring still images. I have used these pics for book covers and webpages, often. Video makes it real easy to get those great once in a lifetime shots! From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 11 USE THE WEBCAM FUNCTION Some newer video cameras also double as a webcam for your computer. These camcorders are grrrreat for traveling -- so compact and versatile! New online services have recently appeared that make sending video with emails a breeze! I say that because the large video files stay on the video company's servers so they never weigh down your emails, your webpages, or your customers with huge files or download times! http://www.vmdirect.com/editrebel/ http://www.firststream.com/editrebel/ MAKE YOUR OWN BACKGROUNDS FOR VIDEO TITLES Background shots for superimposed titles on videos are often composed of close up nature shots or cityscapes -- think of your local weatherman. But a background can be any picture or image you want. A common background shot is the out of focus Christmas lights behind the weather-man's forecast. TAPE NEWS EVENTS AND SELL THEM TO YOUR LOCAL TV STATION TV station news crews cannot be everywhere at the same time. And if TV news doesn't have visualnews, they are highly likely not to report on it. So, if you videotape news-worthy events from an independent by-stander perspective -- meaning, don't ask for interviews or talk while recording-then you have a good chance of getting paid for your footage. Contact your local station(s) and ask for their guidelines and freelance opportunities. All shots should be what stations call "Broll", various shots from differing angles with clean audio and a stable non-jerky video. VIDEOTAPE DEMONSTRATIONS TO DETER VIOLENCE This is especially useful when there are two competing demonstrations at the same location, at the same time. Of course, 99.9% of demonstrations are lawful and peaceful. POLICE THE POLICE There have been cases of abuse by law officials around the country. You can videotape your local police in action. You really can do this! If you have an interesting topic that affects most TV viewers you can create a small TV segment (about 1 minute in length) that your local news station may want to air weekly. You will need to contact your local TV station to pitch your idea. It may be valuable to have as a demo the first segment or two ready for air. CREATE A LOCAL TALK SHOW FOR LOCAL TV This can easily happen if your community offers a community access cable channel. There have been some small access shows that were picked up by the big guys. Rent "Wayne's World" to get in the creative mood. Of course, don't rule out the possibility of egtting your show on the local network TV station. It's actually an original technique and staple of the video style, documentary. You could make a video from your photos using other equipment, but this book is about using your camcorder. Also, you don't need to make a traditional documentary with your photos. I just made a memorial video for a funeral service. You can also capture your art on video utilizing slow camera push ins and camera pans, then make a demo disc with your art set to music. The possibilities of projects using only photos or still art are literally limitless! Make up a game. For example, you could play "identify that object or place!" Each team will video places and things with only extremely close up shots. Once each team has videotaped 20 places or things the other players must guess what or where they are. VIDEO CONTESTS FOR FAME AND MONEY Well, maybe not fame. But you could record all types of contests (baby beauty, pet shows, etc) and sell copies to attendees. (Get permission from the contest organizer first.) THE BEST BUG SPLAT! Hold your camera out car window to capture the best bug splat! CREATE YOUR OWN DOLLY SHOT! Video your subject using a "dolly shot"-- a dolly shot is recording with a camera in motion on wheels. Professionals use a dolly and a dolly track. But you don't need to spend $30,000 buying your own dolly and track! Just put on your roller skates, or get out your skateboard and have someone push you past the subject you're videotaping! You could even place your camera ON the skateboard and pull it down the street! From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 47 ALTER TIME AND SPACE! This is an exercise to be done completely in your camcorder. Create a video of someone entering and exiting a variety of doors. You must start and stop recording at the correct moments to make the shots look they are entering and or exiting in real time. You can do this much more easily when you edit your tape using editing software BUT you will gain knowledge worthy of a director if practice editing "in camera". PRACTICE BEING VISUALLY CREATIVE This is also an exercise. Strengthen your visual creativity by recording up to 15 minutes of ONE object -- like a tomato. Use various locations, scenes, lighting, angles and lens, etc. If you can hold your audience's attention showing them the same tomato in a new way -- YOU ARE GOOD! USE THE 'BIG BROTHER'S WATCHING' TECHNIQUE WHEN YOU ARE AWAY Notify the babysitter and kids that the "camera will remain ON and STATIONARY" all evening. DIVES BACKWARDS Video people diving into a pool, then make a movie by playing the clips backwards. You could also nickname someone "Dives Backwards." This makes a great POV shot of a bad guy being tossed about, or a hero rolling into the scene before making his winning move.... ATTACK CAT Attach a fake tail and ears to your camera and get your jealous cat to attack it. Instant close up cat fight! (I suggest getting cats to attack your camera because dogs can do real damage.) OUT OF HARM'S WAY Stand waaaay back. Point the camera at your friend and zoom into his/her face as close as you can-- using the zoom lens. Now have your friend shoot rubber bands, water guns, water hose, caulk gun, etc. directly at the camera (but never reaching it of course!) When you play the tape back, it will look to your audience like they're about to get it! Of course, you don'thave to tell them that you were never in harm's way. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! Make that film you've always wanted to make about commercialism,"Santa is Satan." http://www.landoverbaptist.org/news1299/santy.html From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 49 OUT OF HARM'S WAY 2 Place your camera in front of a clean window then paint on, throw things at, spray water on, wet kiss, etc. the window glass. BURY IT ALIVE! Place your camera in a clear sealable baggie and bury it alive. (While it's recording your evil deed of course!) WATCHING A DISHWASHER AT WORK Place your camera in a clear sealable baggie in the dishwasher. Then place two flashlights (lit of course) in the dishwasher. Turn the settings to cold wash -- then turn the dishwasher ON! PUT IT IN THE FRIG To find out if the light stays on after the door is closed, silly! PRETEND YOU'RE A SPY Leave your camera recording under your sister's bed when she has a slumber party with her silly school friends. In this exercise it's doesn't matter so much what you capture on tape. What really matters is you plan it well and never get caught! LEARN ABOUT SEX FROM YOUR PARENTS Leave it under your parent's bed when they get back from dinner... Some artists want video of themselves at work as a way to market their unusual techniques. And some artists need themselves recorded on tape to send out copies and get jobs. Here are a couple examples of that: flame thrower, mime, sculptress, potter, comedian, juggler , magician, musician, body artist, etc. YES -- GET PAID! VIDEOTAPE A FLORIST ON MOTHERS DAY Do you see?! There are two ways to make time lapse shots with your camcorder. 1-Record video for an hour and then compress that shot in video editing software to mere seconds. Or 2-- Use the still photo feature on your camcorder and set it to take a photo every minute for 8 hours -- or however many hours you want. Pirates of the Caribbean DVD has a time-lapse shot lasting over several days! So, find a trade, business, event, or nature setting that occurs in one place. Stabilize--lock down-- your camera and start recording! Contact video stock footage houses and ask them to buy your stuff. It's a good idea to pick a local story so that time and transportation doesn't become an issue for you. VIDEOTAPE FUNERALS Videotape funerals and sell copies to attendees. Be sure to grab shots of the grave being dug. Seriously! Funerals are social gatherings and are really more for the living than the deceased. When one has a great memorial service, it's a nice thing to be able to show to others who couldn't be there in pers on, as well as a nice thing for the survivors to look back on when they are feeling melancholy. OPTIONAL FUNERAL HOME SERVICE Offer to create videos out of family photos for funeral parlors as an optional service for their clients. Memorial videos can be as simple as photos set to music, or as wild as an MTV video complete with host. This is merely a type of insurance. It will come in handy against those managers who fell through on their promises. Also, if you had problems during your lease, be sure to videotape the condition of your apartment the way you left it. This way, bad managers and landlords can't get extra money out of you for trumped up charges of destruction. Be thorough. Turn on all your lights, appliances, and use close up shots accordingly. Postal carriers who've been bitten by dogs is one suchconvention. Check out Las Vegas for weird and wild conventions.... http://www.pcap.com/lvconv.htm MAKE A SHORT MOVIE BY EDITING "IN CAMERA" Most editing is done with software on a computer, but you can also sharpen your directing and editing skills by making movies using only "in camera" editing. An edit is created in camera when you stop then start recording. Drawing a storyboard on paper of your shots will help you do a good job. Here is a GREAT online STORYBOARD EXERCISE! http://www.plugincinema.com/plugin/film_school/interactive.html Here is resource for storyboarding for a PSA TV ad in a downloadable PDF: http://www.flagday.org/Pages/EducationCommitteeStuff/HowToStoryboard.pdf From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 59 VIDEOTAPE DRUG ACTIVITY Secretly videotape any drug activity in your neighborhood. Consider joining local groups that may know how to do this safely. http://www.weprevent.org/ http://www.ncpc.org/ DEFY AUTHORITY Video a friend defying authority. Parking in a no parking zone. Taking pets in no pet area, etc. ***To make this work on video, you will need to include the "no parking" and "no pets" sign in your camera shots. Otherwise, your viewer won't be able to see that you are defying authority. You can also make it a funny movie by parking a tricycle instead of a car, and by walking a toy animal instead of a real one. From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 60 LEARN VIDEO MAGIC TRICKS There are a several of these tricks you can do -- all with your camcorder and your friends. One of these tricks is to make someone disappear into thin air like on those old TV shows "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie." Another trick is to hold a miniature person in the palm of your hand. This book has some sample photos of still photo magic. http://klutz.com/catalog/product.php?itemNo=3500&cat=4 MAKE A VIRAL VIDEO Sounds weird doesn't it? A viral video is NOT a malicious file, but instead is a video made to given and shared for free. The word "viral" is used because these free videos spread across the net "as fast as a computer virus." Making "viral" products is one form of guerilla marketing. HERE is one site that collects them: http://www.ifilm.com/viralvideo From the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Free Video Editing Software" 137 Fun, Funny, Zany & Profitable Things to do with Your Camcorder page 61 RECREATE A NIGHT TIME GUN FIGHT You will need a cigarette lighter for this. Go into a pitch dark place like a closet or bathroom. Don't worry about your recorded audio because you wil l replace it with gunshot sound effects later. Now, record the lighter being sparked over and over again. No flames. Only sparks. After recording for a minute, play the tape back and see what you have. You will need to make sure your hand and fingers never become visible. Close your camcorder's aperture, if needed. (You could try making your shot darker in the editing process as well.) Once you've done that, record as many sparks as you can, making sure you keep your hand in frame as much as possible. The more varied the "gunshots" are -- high, low, big bang, and small bang the better the recreation of a gun fight involving several people or more. Now, with video editing software, inter-cut these "gunshots" with images of people pointing guns. Add gun shot sound effects as you cut back and forth. Throw in a few yells, a few cries of "I've been hit!" and you've got a gun fight at night. I did this once, really. The scene is on my demo reel! For a PBS series we recreated a night time gun fight from 1916 using our "gunshot" video footage and old archive still photos of men using guns. Our gun fight was shot on hi-8 video.
