Spring/Summer 2013 60th Season Closing Production! Get out your pocket-protector and calculator - closing out the 60th production season, Garrison Players presents Larry Shue's "The Nerd," opening May 10. Now an aspiring young architect in Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you" - so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd" - a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence - a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising ending of the play. These students really earned their acting chops - not just memorizing a script, but working on characterization from their feet to their faces, making lightning-fast changes from character to character, using their five senses in improv, mastering projection, and...really comprehending Shakespeare!!! And while the kids were learning the history of theater, parents were demonstrating true community spirit by pitching right in providing costume pieces and props! Behind the scenes Garrison Players members pulled together funny set details and helped to smooth out all of the production details. Way to show the kids what Community is all about! Thanks to all! Next session, in addition to learning all the basic skills of acting, students will be digging into other production aspects of theater and may be involved in writing, directing, and choreographing their own skits for next fall's presentation!!! Get your kids involved in this amazing program for Grades 3-7!
