EDITORS NOTE: Cockney Rhyming Slang originated in East London in the 1840s and continues to evolve in the
present day. It involves substituting normal words with a rhyming phrase or popular name, eg. “apples and pears”
for “stairs”. The development of Cockney Rhyming Slang is a gradual process and specific to Londoners. It can be
almost impossible for ‘outsiders’ to understand!
