HANDSWORTH SECONDARY SCHOOL FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS 10: COURSE OUTLINE PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES It is expected that students will: · Use a variety of methods to solve real-life, practical, technical and theoretical problems. · Solve problems that involve linear measurement using SI and imperial units of measure. · Apply proportional reasoning to problems involving conversions between SI and imperial units. · Solve problems (using SI and imperial units) that involve the surface area and volume of 3-D objects. · Develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that involve right triangles. · Demonstrate an understanding of factors of whole numbers by determining prime factors, GCF, LCM, square root, cube root. . Demonstrate an understanding of irrational numbers by representing, identifying, simplifying & ordering radicals. . Demonstrate an understanding of powers with integral and rational exponents. . Demonstrate an understanding of the multiplication of polynomial expressions (monomials, binomials, trinomials), concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. . Demonstrate an understanding of common factors and trinomial factoring. . Interpret and explain the relationships among data, graphs, and real-life situations. . Demonstrate an understanding of relations & functions, represent linear functions using function notation. . Describe and represent linear relations using words, ordered pairs, table of values, graphs, equations. . Determine the characteristics of the graphs of linear relations (intercepts, slope, domain, range). . Determine the equation of a linear relation to solve problems. .
