Reader comments and contributions are welcome. Our 2012 event benefited from a great community turn out and near perfect weather. Several thousand participants made their way to Hart Park for the annual Tosa’s Night Out tradition. There were nearly 2,000 official registrants for the family flashlight walk alone! Many of Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Associations and Block Watches were represented at TNO 2012 as well. Thanks to our many sponsors we were able to include family priced food and refreshments, live entertainment, free ice cream and water, and more. Special thanks to our Major Sponsor Froedtert and the Medical College. A great time was also had in the American Transmission Company kid’s area, including free inflatable kid’s rides. The ever popular WaterStone Bank coloring contest and canvass bag promotion was a big hit as well. The evening concluded with an exciting Bartolotta’s Fireworks display sponsored by Dave & Busters of Wauwatosa. The quality of our Tosa’s Night Out event depends on the collective support of the many businesses, organizations, and individuals who donate their time, talents, and financial sponsorships. Please see the accompanying article “Wauwatosa Thanks You” for a complete list of our sponsors and participating groups. The success of Tosa’s Night Out also relies on the continued support of the greater Wauwatosa community and specifically our block watch captains and participating households. Once again Wauwatosa turned out to take a stand against crime and show their support for community crime prevention. Everyone who helped make TNO a reality including those who continue to attend and show their support for the event should be proud of their efforts. We have a great event, in a great community, for great reasons! Thanks again Wauwatosa for another job well done. 1 “A Community Service of the Wauwatosa Police Department” Comparative Incident Analysis Category Wauwatosa Police Department Barry M. Thefts from Vehicles School Delivery & Pick-Up Theft from vehicles is an ongoing problem and yes, I know it sounds like a broken record, but reminders are never a bad idea. Here are a few for you. As a new school year begins, we would like to address one of the most common concerns at each of our school buildings: driving and parking. Wauwatosa School Resource Officers and the Wauwatosa Police Department need your help to keep all of our children safe. Cooperation from you in a few key areas is critical to accomplish that goal: • • • • • Never leave anything of value in your vehicle, even if it’s for a short period of time. Remove not only your portable electronic devices but everything related to those items. Get out of the habit of leaving loose change in your car. Always park in a well-lit area, if you park in the driveway at home install sufficient exterior lighting. Always lock your car. • • • • • • • Park only in legal parking spaces. Where a sign indicates "No Parking", this also means no stopping unless you are actively loading/unloading a child(ren) at that moment. Follow all traffic and parking signs. Do NOT double and triple park! This causes children to run between parked vehicles to get to you and could cause a traffic crash involving a pedestrian or other vehicle. If you pull up to the school and your child is not ready, please drive away from the main loading area until he/she is outside waiting for you. Should you need to come into the school to talk to your child's teacher or other school staff, please park a distance away and walk to the school. If your child is older, please leave parking spaces closer to the school for the parents of younger children and have your child walk to meet you. Because there have been a few incidents over the past few years in which children have been struck or nearly struck by vehicles and to help prevent these types of incidents from occurring, the Wauwatosa Police Department will be aggressively enforcing parking laws around our schools with citations this year. Remember, our children are our most precious assets and we will do everything possible to keep them safe. Thank you for your assistance in this as we work together! 2 TOSA WATCH - Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Watch Newsletter Calling All Seniors The Wauwatosa Hart Park Senior Center, administered by the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee for the city of Wauwatosa, offers a unique opportunity to all adults age 50 and older in the comfortable and welcoming setting of Hart Park’s Muellner building. October - December 2012 Service Call Safety When inviting installers, repair technicians, or any other services(s) into your home or apartment, there are several things to consider. Although the majority of companies are honest and law abiding, an “In Home” visit can expose you to theft, burglary, or worse. Taking easy precautions and preparing for an in home visit is simple. Whether your furnace or hot water heater needs service, you are having cable, satellite, or telephone service installed, or you are considering a home repair or improvement, there will be occasions when you invite a stranger into your home or apartment. Before considering a company, get to know your contractor: • Use reputable companies that are established in your community. • Use references from family, friends, and neighbors • Research companies through the Better Business Bureau • Use insured companies who conduct background checks on their workers • Compile a list of companies before the need arises so you make sound decisions Calling For Service • When making the appointment ask the name or names of the employee(s) coming to your home • Ask the exact time you can expect the employee(s) and if they can call just before arrival • Get a description of the service vehicle(s) Prepare Yourself and Your Home • Hide easy to carry away valuables • Do not “brag” about or “Show off” valuables or collectables • Have a family member or friend with you during the visit if you are uneasy about being alone Upon Arrival • Look for marked company vehicle • Look for employee uniforms and photo identification • Keep employee(s) under observation and limit access to unnecessary areas • Be suspicious of employees who appear more concerned about your belongings than their job If at any time during a service visit you become uncomfortable, ask the worker(s) to leave. If you feel you have been the victim of a crime, call local law enforcement immediately. 3 “A Community Service of the Wauwatosa Police Department” Garage Burglaries Most garage burglaries can be prevented with a few simple steps. Always keep doors and windows closed and locked. Install a good dead bolt, one where the bolt is 1" - 1 1/2" in length. The strike plate which is the metal plate the bolt goes into on the door jamb should have 3" - 3 1/2" screws securing it. When a door has glass on it, put a security screen on the inside of the door mounting it with screws that are as long as the door is thick. Put curtains or an obstructive film on garage windows to keep intruders curiosity at bay. If the door hinges are on the outside of the garage, replace them with security hinges that prevent the hinge pins from being removed. If you notice a door or window that is open and you know you closed them, contact the police to investigate. These tips can and should be applied to every structure you own or are otherwise responsible for. If we make it difficult for a bad guy to commit their crime they may give up on your neighborhood all together. Lock Your Windows, Please Lock all doors and windows when not at home or while sleeping. For windows of all types, consider installing after-market keyed window sash locks. Double hung and sliding windows should be pinned so that they cannot be opened more than 4”. Pinning is accomplished by drilling holes into both frames of a double hung window that you can place some sort of pin through both frames in the closed position as well as while open. By pinning the windows at 4” you receive ventilation while preventing anyone from reaching in or entering your property without physically breaking the glass. If you are installing new windows, purchase windows that have pinning devices built in. Never keep purses, laptops, briefcases, wallets or other items of value on tables or counters near windows. Basement windows that are not glass block should have horizontal security bars placed across the middle of the glass and mounted on both sides with appropriate mounting hardware. You may consider having a few that are hinged on one end and locked or latched on the other for an escape route. Consult your local fire codes. TNO Coloring Contest Winners This year, 75 children entered the contest held during Tosa’s Night Out at Hart Park. Mayfair Mall, McDonald’s Corporation, Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors and WaterStone Bank sponsored the coloring contest. As always, it was difficult for the judges to make a decision, but the winners have been selected for Tosa’s Night Out Coloring Contest. Each winner received a Mayfair Mall gift certificate for their efforts. McDonald’s and Baskin Robbins donated certificates as consolation prizes to all other entrants.
