Many teachers have been using this tool for a number of years around the world which has lead to the polished product you now have. If you have any suggestions we’d love to hear from you on our feedback page. Using this tool effectively The Poetry Power Pack is designed to be used by teachers and students. In a one hour writing session it would be expected that two styles of poetry could be explored, dissected, drafted and published. However, work at a pace which best suits your students and needs. Slide 5 is the ‘home page’ of the Poetry Power Pack and can be accessed by clicking on the home button on the top right of every slide. Ideally, each style should be modelled to students before they are given the chance to create their own. Mechanics Grammar Spelling Punctuation Capitalization Acrostic Poetry In an Acrostic Poem the first, last or other letters of each line spells a word or phrase related to your Keyword. The keyword is written vertically in bold or colored letters. Try to use lots of adjectives and verbs Horizontal words do not always have to start with the first letter of the vertical word you can use any letter from the word. Ballads Ballads most frequently deal with folk-lore, love or popular legends, They are written in simple verse, with minimal detail. Ballads contain emotive language inspiring imagery and tell a story. There are no set rules for writing a ballad but most commonly…. The first stanza is the most important as it introduces the story. Ballads consist of four line stanzas. Ballads can use any rhyming pattern. Our example uses AABB-CCDD-EEDD-FFGG-HHII Ballads are usually written in first person and focus on a single moment or event. He strutted about and ruffled his wings Then he did the most ominous thing. He let out a screech and puffed out his chest I wanted to run from this evil pest. Clerihew A Clerihew is a light hearted poem consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme of AABB. A clerihew usually deals with a person or character within the first line. Clerihews have frequently been used to mock famous people such as politicians and celebrities. As a class start with a familiar character such as Harry Potter and compare efforts. He loves to laugh and smile his face stretches for a mile Diamante Style A Diamante is a seven-lined contrast poem laid out in a diamond shape. It is highly structured and simple to understand. Line 1: Noun or subject Line 2: Two Adjectives Line 3: Three -ing words Line 4: Four words about the subject Line 5: Three -ing words Line 6: Two adjectives Line 7: Synonym/antonym for the subject Weather Learn More Template Epitaph An epitaph is a brief poem inscribed on a tombstone praising a deceased person, usually with rhyming lines. Epitaph’s are usually written in a light hearted manner but they can be serious if need be. Epitaphs have a simple rhyming pattern of AABB Epitaphs can be used to teach us a lesson for example why we shouldn’t eat candy too often. It often references the seasons. Haiku emphasises fine details to build a connection with the audience Learn More Template Free Verse Free Verse is a form of poetry free of traditional rules of versification, rhyme, meter or length. In moving from line to line, the poet's main consideration is where to insert line breaks. Some ways of doing this include breaking where there is a natural pause or at a point of suspense for the reader. There are no set rules for constructing a monody, but... Monody’s generally consist of four stanzas. There are no rules as to how long or short a monorhyme should be. Stanzas are not used in monorhyme poetry. This is a great starting point for developing rhyming skills. Words ending in Air, Ate, it, Ing &Oh have many rhyming words. Odes are generally quite lengthy. Odes focus on the many nuances of a single thing. Odes commonly rhyme but it is a matter of choice. Only write an ode about something you are passionate about. Learn More Template BLACK In darkness, beauty ebony rises, envelops all. Cold, warm nothing. Infinite pools holding infinite thoughts, deep and hidden. Blackness is the only one with the power to hold memories, to induce forgetfulness. Every person has two caches of blackness. They are your eyes. You see with black holes, pools, wells of meaning, meaninglessness. Black means print on paper, pupils, emptiness, nothing. But black has turned bitter. The world believes black is a horrible color. Black hearts are full of cruelty. Black cats bring bad luck. But black is beautiful. Black is eternal. Palindromes A palindrome or shadow poem reads identical both forwards or backwards. You must use the same words in the first half of the poem as the second half Reverse the order for the second half Use a well considered word in the middle line as a bridge from the first half to the second half of the poem Learn More Template Pantoum A pantoum is a poem of French and Malaysian heritage with a set pattern to be followed. It is an organized jumble of 8 non rhyming lines as structured below. Begin by writing 4 original lines: (1) (2) (3) (4) When I was seven My family was evacuated We rode a bus To Manzanar. Repeat lines 2 & 4, use lines 5 & 6 to expand ideas introduced in lines 2 & 4 (2) My family was evacuated. (5) Only forty-eight hours to prepare, then (4) To Manzanar. (6) We rode in shock, but together Repeat lines 5 & 6, use lines 7 & 8 to expand ideas mentioned in lines 5 & 6 (5) Only forty-eight hours to prepare. Learn More Template Quatrains A Quatrain is a four line poem alternating in rhyme to one of the four patterns demonstrated below. You can join quatrains together of the same or differing patterns to meet your needs as a single poem also. An artistic expression is for your poem to adopt the shape of its subject. Shape poems are either an outline or fill the space within an outline. Poetry within a space is also known as concrete poetry. ► Any style of poetry or writing can be applied. ► Start with an easy shape and change your text size for best fit. Tutorial Learn More Template Shakespearean Sonnet A sonnet is a lyrical poem. There are two classifications of sonnet; The English and the Italian. The English or ‘Shakespearean’ sonnet is explained here. • English sonnets are14 lines in length • They are broken into 3 x 4 line stanzas and a 2 line closing stanza. • The rhyming scheme is: abab cdcd efef gg • Sonnets are a complex style poetry. Tongue Twisters Tongue Twisters are made up of lines that are hard to say fast. In other words, the poem ties your tongue into knots. Tongue twisters generally make no sense and are just fun. • Use the letters S, T, M & N frequently as these are difficult to repeat quickly. Steaming sands simmer, standing in some sun like silver sea shell stands selling by the sea shore while sleek slithering snakes successfully scramble making melted matted monkey muscle money ► Be silly, creative and have fun. Learn More Template Villanelle A Villanelle is a structured 19 line poem consisting of a specific rhyming scheme. aba aba aba aba aba abaa. The first and the third lines of the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem. They appear together in the last two lines. Poetry Glossary Chorus - a part of a song or poem recurring at intervals Couplets - Two lines of poetry, one after the other, that rhyme and are of the same length and rhythm. For example, “I do not like green eggs and ham. / I do not like them Sam I Am.” Prose - the ordinary language people use in speaking or writing Quatrain - A four-line poem or stanza. Refrain - A phrase, line, or stanza that is repeated throughout a poem, often after each stanza. Syllable - A part of a word, usually a vowel and it’s surrounding consonants, that makes a single sound when spoken. All words have at least one syllable. For example, cat, I, and would are all one syllable long because they are spoken with a single movement of the mouth. Cattle, eyeball, and wouldn’t are all two syllables because they require two separate sounds to be spoken. Stanzas - A group of lines in a poem, separated by space from other stanzas, much like a paragraph in prose Tercet - A group of three lines that rhyme with one another, or are connected to another tercet by their rhyme scheme.
