Using this tool effectively

The Poetry Power Pack is designed to be used by teachers and
students.

In a one hour writing session it would be expected that two styles of
poetry could be explored, dissected, drafted and published.
However, work at a pace which best suits your students and needs.

Slide 5 is the ‘home page’ of the Poetry Power Pack and can be
accessed by clicking on the home button on the top right of every
slide.

Ideally, each style should be modelled to students before they are
given the chance to create their own.

Provide students access to the Poetry Assessment Rubric on slide 6
before undertaking publishing.
Navigating the Power Pack
Each page is broken into various sections. Take a moment to familiarise yourself with these.

The Turkey
As I walked along the road one day
Kicking up stones along the way,
I saw a bird of unusual size
Who had a large beak and small, beady eyes.
He strutted about and ruffled his wings
Then he did the most ominous thing.
He let out a screech and puffed out his chest
I wanted to run from this evil pest.
As this bird's mighty exterior did appear
The inside of my chest was filled with fear.
He put one talon forward, the other one next
This troublesome bird was making me vexed.
I then did something that was a great chance.
I kicked a stone at him to stop his advance.
He then chased the stone, oh joy of great joys!
I felt myself one of the luckiest boys!
Around the corner I ran, straight to my home,
Leaving that bird confused and alone.
Don't befriend a turkey (for that's what he was)
Or he will attack you simply because.

Free Verse
Free Verse is a form of
poetry free of traditional
rules of versification,
rhyme, meter or length.
In moving from line to
line, the poet's main
consideration is where
to insert line breaks.
Some ways of doing this
include breaking where
there is a natural pause
or at a point of suspense
for the reader.
The only rule to
remember with free
verse is that there are no
rules…

Late on a cool fall night
while sitting on the river bank
I noticed how the ripples
cast a different texture to the setting sun
The colours of the sky
just right for this season
Red, orange, yellow, purple even a tinge of blue
The river seems to mix them
like a kaleidoscope
Seems there is no end to beauty
as this endless array goes on and on
Then the distant sound of the frogs and crickets
keeping time to this dancing spectacular
Then my heart goes quiet my pulse slows down
I lay back to thank my maker

An iceberg struck the port side
A maiden journey did restrain
Beneath the brine's deepest bide
Her deck wouldst ne'er glimmer afloat
Fathoms consumed the hull
Of a crossing she could not gloat
Her sinking bought a long lull
Whence departing Southampton dock
There ‘twas a seafaring pride
Her voyage fast turned to shock
O'er the Atlantic's risky ride
A sad maritime tale is told
Of the Titanic going down
She'd not reach New York's safe hold
Her bow did pitilessly drown

BLACK
In darkness, beauty ebony rises, envelops all.
Cold, warm nothing.
Infinite pools holding infinite thoughts, deep and
hidden.
Blackness is the only one with the power to hold
memories, to induce forgetfulness.
Every person has two caches of blackness. They
are your eyes.
You see with black holes, pools, wells of meaning,
meaninglessness.
Black means print on paper, pupils, emptiness,
nothing.
But black has turned bitter. The world believes
black is a horrible color.
Black hearts are full of cruelty.
Black cats bring bad luck.
But black is beautiful.
Black is eternal.
Palindromes

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Tongue Twisters
Tongue Twisters are made up of lines that are hard to say fast. In
other words, the poem ties your tongue into knots. Tongue twisters
generally make no sense and are just fun.
• Use the letters S,
T, M & N
frequently as
these are
difficult to
repeat quickly.

like silver sea shell stands selling by the sea shore
while sleek slithering snakes successfully scramble
making melted matted monkey muscle money

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
