JP Muller wins Portland Masters
JP Muller defeated Gary Ledford for the 2007 Portland Masters Championship Sunday afternoon, March 4th at Kellogg Bowl in Milwaukie.
Muller advanced to the finals, emerging undefeated from the winners bracket
to face Ledford who bested Brian LeClair 632 to 619 to advance to the
finals. Muller also defeated LeClair 623 to 564, sending LeClair to the losers
bracket to face Ledford
Muller had this to say after his victory, “I’m getting to old for this, I found
myself getting alittle tired in the second game of the final match, and sat down
and took some deep breaths to regroup.”
He continued saying, “It’s been 8 years since I competed in a major tournament, so this is really gratifying to me.” Muller has two second place finishes and one third in previous Masters competition.
Muller finished the conversation by saying, “I really want to thank all the
staff at Mt. Hood Lanes and Wilsonville Lanes for their help in my achieving
this victory.”
Going into the finals Ledford needed to defeat Muller twice to win the title
and he got by Muller in the first set 679 to 631 to force the deciding final
three game match.
For a while it looked like this might be Ledford’s day as he bested Muller
in the first game of the final match 208 to 196 for a 12 pin lead. But Muller
was not to be denied and came roaring back with games of 216 and 181 for
a 593 series, while Ledford encountered problems in the final two games
bowling scores of 158 and 145 for 511 and a second place finish.
Muller collect $1200 plus a USBC Masters entry and a stunning trophy
and Ledford collected $800 plus a USBC Masters entry.

took an immediate liking to the sport
and currently is averaging 180 in two
leagues at Baileys Classic Lanes and
Allen’s Crosley Lanes.
Rachel said, “I had a really great

keeping on bowling.

Looking at the calendar, we are getting closer to the end of our winter
leagues and nearer to nice warm outdoor weather so we can divide our
time between outdoor sports and the remainder of the bowling season.
But, the bowling season doesn’t have to end in March or April since all
centers are tempting us with summer league benefits. We can get into a
“new ball” league or a “Reno” type league or various other inducements
to reward us for not abandoning the bowling ball for the entire summer.
Some leagues might be two or three person teams with four games per
session. There are variations of some kind that should interest everyone.
Check them out.
However, before we get much further along, we have the CITY
tournaments to challenge our skills. The GPUSBC Women’s City
Championship Tournament is all set for Tigard Lanes on March 10-11,
17-18 and 24-25. The tournament committee promises a return to the
“traditional type” tournament many ladies indicated they missed last year
when both city tournaments were held at the same time in the same center
with little difference between them. Although several ladies expressed
displeasure, assurances that this year will be different should prompt a
positive feeling. Let’s support this tournament and give the tournament
committee their opportunity to bring you back in. Additionally, the
tournament really has an added plus by being held at Tigard Bowl which
is a smaller center and the entire staff there is very dedicated to making
this a great tournament. O.K., the challenge is there. Let’s give it a whirl.
Entry blanks are in all Bowling Centers.
Then, along comes the GPUSBC Open City Championship
Tournament being held on April 7-8 and 14-15 at AMF 20th Century
Lanes. There is a Scratch division and two handicap divisions with each
division planning a $500.00 All Events winner. Considerable promotion
is being done by volunteers Lee Mabe and Steve Michaliszyn in seeking
sponsors, contacting leagues, making personal contact, etc. They have
expressed a desire to get this tournament back to a first class event as it
was in the past. They are trying to get entire leagues to enter and I hope
they are successful in all they are trying to accomplish. For those of you
who know these two gentlemen, give them a word of thanks when you
see them. Let’s fill up the 50 lanes at 20th Century. Entry blanks are in
all centers.
Also on the tournament side is the OREGON STATE USBC 64th
Annual Women’s Championship tournament being held at AMF 20th
Century Lanes from May 12th through June 17th. Entry blanks are in all
bowling centers. Still time to enter but time is running short since entries
close on March 15th.
A new director was appointed to the board of directors to replace
Denielle Otey who resigned to move to California. His name is BOBBY
KNIGHT ( no, not the infamous coach with the same name). Bobby
bowls in the All Star league and also at Valley and Wilsonville Lanes.
Welcome aboard.
The USBC National convention is being held the last week of March
where several proposed amendments to playing rules and other
administrative items are on the agenda. Details to be covered next month.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at various centers during my
travels.

Congratulations to JP M uller and his great Portland Masters victory.
And hats off to Bob Wells, Dave Husted and Bill Oetkin for the great
tournament management. Heard nothing but good from participating
bowlers.
And a special thanks to Bob Wells for the photos. Now a question to
myself. How long have I been in the newspaper business? Well ,The
Van-Port for over 15 years and prior to The Van-Port some twentyfive years of a nomadic “regular” newspaper career, starting in Los
Angeles with the Herald American group. Stops at newspapers in Oregon, owner of a small daily and large weekly in Kansas, director of
the student daily newspaper for Texas Tech University in Lubbock and
publisher of the small town Stanton, Texas Reporter before heading
back to the west coast and finally to the Vancouver Columbian. And in
that time I suppose I have taken 1,000’s of pictures, pictures of weddings, births, deaths, athletic teams, politicians, people, places and things.
So you would think I would be prepared when about to take a picture.
Well, at the Portland Masters I wasn’t. Stood up to take a picture of
JP and no flash, camera batteries were dead and I did not bring any
spares. So again thank you Bob Wells.
Hear a lot of rumors about center closures and new ones being built
and as we get some official word will pass it on.
Trent Zabelle continues to maintain his “King of the Hill” record at
Triangle Bowl in Longview. Trent made it three in
a row with his February victory. No information
on how much the win was worth.
Allen’s Crosley Lanes recently held a fund raiser
for the Susan Komen Cancer Fund. Christine
Sloan, (pictured here) raised over $1500 in
pledges. In addition Christine contacted local merchants and brought in gifts to be raffled off and this
raised at least another $500. All told the event raised
around $5,000 for the fund.
Yes, I know, it’s not Centralia and then Centralia. From the south it’s
Chehallis and then Centralia. Last month I had both bowling centers
located in Centralia. Not so! Fairway Lanes, operated by the Turner
Brothers is in Chehallis.
Thanks to Northwest Sports Photography in Beaverton for the use of

Bowler Profile
Know a bowler with a story?
by Ernie Gerald
A Dedicated Bowler With an Inconvenience
Rodney Phillips is a dedicated bowler with both
artificial legs from the knee down. He lived in Alaska for
31 years prior to
relocating to Longview.
Rodney is divorced and
single and moved to
Longview to be with his
family and to help his
sister take care of his 82
year old mother.
Rodney was a pinsetter
at an 8 lane house in 1960
and has bowled since
1959. Rodney lost his
legs to frostbite when his
snowmobile left him
stranded in the bitter cold of Alaska.
Phillips lived and worked at a remote fly in fishing
lodge in central Alaska by Mt. McKinley right on the
Iditarod dog race trail. On February 23, 1988 Rodney
said he was on his way to a store 20 miles away when his
snowmobile stopped. He walked for 3 days in an -18
degree below during a snow storm until he reached the
store. He then was air lifted to the hospital and found he
had severe frostbite. On March 17th the frostbite turned
into gangrene and the doctors had to amputate both legs.
Now picture this, Rodney has bowled since 1959 and
did not want to quit. He bowled from a wheelchair until
he got his prosthetics and then learned to bowl with his
new legs. Rodney is bowling three leagues a week at
Triangle Bowl in Longview. His average is 178-180. He
is very pleasant to be around and enjoys his bowling and
the fellowship. We are all proud to call him one of ours.

Junior Coaches, Article II
Have problems getting your bowlers arm swing into “Time” with their
moving feet? It’s really not that hard, at first, to get them close.
Stand off to the right, near the foul line, of a right handed bowler. Observe
two things as they approach the line. First, the footwork. Watch for the
heel to make contact with the lane on the last step before the slide step.
That would be the third step in a four step approach, or the 4th step in a
five step approach.
Get used to watching for that heel to make contact with the surface of
the approach. Then, using your visual skills, watch the ball at the top of the
back swing as that foot makes contact with the approach. If the ball continues upward after the foot has made contact with the approach, and as
your bowler moves forward and downward, that bowler has late timing. In
other words, the ball is still going upward as the bowler is going forward
and downward into the finish or delivery position.
Their body is ready to roll the ball and their arm swing isn’t ready yet
because the ball is still going upward when they are trying to go downward
into the finish position.
That results in the weight of the ball moving upward pulling the ball side
shoulder open to their target. A right handed bowler will miss to the right
unless they use excessive force by pulling or dragging the ball forward.
Then they will probably miss inside their target because when they pull the
ball forward, they also move that shoulder forward. Now, where are they
facing when they release their bowling ball. Left or right of target.
When their bowling ball has reached it’s highest point at the top of the
backswing, and the heel of their next to last step has come into contact
with the approach, they are in pretty good time. The ball will start to swing
downward as they move forward and downward into the finish position.
How do we fix late timing? Out of the stance of course. That’s where it all
starts. When the bowler breaks from the stance, the ball wants to be about
waist high, with the arm only partly unfolded, and heading downward when
weight is put onto the first step in a four
step delivery, and the same position on
the second step of a five step delivery.
This is all for a slow to moderate tempo
approach. Slightly lower for “quick
feet”. Just observe your bowler and get
the ball into time with their style of approach.
It’s a little more difficult for a five
step approach because that bowler is
already in motion when they start the
ball, so the feet are already moving
faster than the starting ball. Make small
adjustments out of the stance, then
observe them at the line. If they are still
late, then move the starting of the ball
to a little earlier time.
Watch them during their second step
of a four step approach. The bowling
ball should not be in front of them on
that second step or the third step of a
five step approach.
As bowlers increase their skills,
modification of their approaches need
to be added. These young bowlers not
only grow, but their approaches change
tempo. Keeping these growing, young
athletes in good time will keep your
hands full. It’s a constant challenge that
only you, as their coach, can address.
It has to happen on a constant, continuing basis if you want them to reach
their full potential.
Until next month, have fun bowling,
and coaching!
We had 112 bowlers at the Valley Lanes Classic and awarded, including
brackets, $690 in scholarships. A little trivia: All bowlers winning the title at
Valley Lanes moved up from the #2 qualifying spot, and Silver Creek Lanes
in Silverton brought 8 bowlers, 4 of them made match play, with 2 of them
winning titles. That junior program is in it’s very first season!
“Classic” Division (200 & up): Dean Richards of Tacoma qualified 2nd,
then won 3 of his 6 matches to hold off his opposition and win his 3rd title of
the season with a total of 2879, collecting a $100 scholarship and adding a
star to his already highly decorated banner. Curtis Dicken of Tigard finished
2nd with 2782, Austin Marshall of Newport 3rd with 2771, Bret Baldwin of
Toledo 4th with 2681, Matt Walsh of Tigard 5th with 2662, and Nathan
Gubele of Portland 6th with 2554. The cut was high at 1292.
“AA” Division (180 - 199): This was a barn burner! Kevin Brown of
Portland, in only his second Classic qualified 2nd, then won 3 of his 6 matches
to move up and win his first title, earn his banner, and collect a $95 scholarship with a one pin win and total of 2491. Stephen Miller of Springfield rolled
218 at Brown, won the final match, but finished 2nd with a total pin count of
2490. Sha Harvey of Beaverton is back after a long layoff, and finished 3rd
with 2463, Taylor Reineke of Eugene 4th with 2412, Jarrod Hicks of Salem
5th with 2335, and Cristina Martinotti of Gresham 6th with 2303. The cut
was 1152.
“A”Division (156 - 179): Andrew Zwicker of Salem qualified 2nd, was
still trailing by over 100 pins, rolled a monster 257 in his final match to squeak
out the win, and win his second title in as many tries with a 2528 total,
collecting a $100 scholarship and adding a star to his banner. Everett Gallaway
of Salem finished 2nd with 2508, Jeremi Moore of Silverton 3rd with 2150,
Dylan Browning of Portland 4th with 2129, Nate Reineke of Eugene 5th
with 2098, and Dallas Trower of Dallas 6th with 2014. The cut was 1060.
“B”Division (155 & under): Jennifer Springer of Silverton qualified 2nd,
then won 4 of her 6 matches in her debut at the classics to win the title, earn
her banner, and collect a $100 scholarship with a 2103 total. Makayla Douglas of Gresham finished 2nd with 2074, Chelsea Lein of Creswell 3rd with
2054, Kristin Raz of Tualatin 4th with 2010, Derek Johnson of Silverton 5th
with 1974, and Katy Laureano of Portland 6th with 1967. The cut was 979.
Thank you Valley Lanes and staff for a great tournament. It’s always great
to be at Valley!

Columbia 300 Traditions Bowling Classic (TBC)
Sets Record Attendance at Big Al’s
Pat Nolan Claims $2,500 First Prize in Vancouver
VANCOUVER, WA – The Columbia 300 Traditions Bowling Classic
(TBC) set a new record for number of bowlers when 88 individual
participants took part in this past weekend’s event at Big Al’s in Vancouver,
Washington.
The
tournament drew 176
total entries, only three (3)
shy of the record set in
Baltimore this past
December.
Vancouver’s own Pat
Nolan took home the
$2,500 first place check
after defeating a talented
field. Nolan defeated
Evan Olson of Tukwila,
WA, Curtis Messer Sr. of
Aberdeen, WA, and Tim
Pierce of Portland. In the
closest and most
competitive championship
match in TBC history, all
four (4) bowlers had a
shot to win in the tenth
frame. Nolan squeezed out the victory by bowling a 196 to best Olson
(194), Messer (190), and Pierce (184).
The tournament paid out over $8,600.00 in prize money demonstrating
the Columbia 300 commitment to competitive tournament bowling. In
addition, almost one-third (1/3) of the entrants collected at least $100.00
in prize money in the event on a $49.00 entry fee (29 out of 87 bowlers).

Cancellation of Columbia 300 Traditions Bowling Classic (TBC)
TBC Participants:
I just wanted to drop you a quick “note” to say “thank you” for
your continued support of the Columbia 300 Traditions Bowling
Classic (TBC) over the past eight (8) months.
As you probably know, Ebonite International purchased Columbia
300 and Track in an agreement with the ownership group on Tuesday.
To that end, the Columbia 300 TBC series has been terminated.
All entries paid for future TBC events will have their monies
refunded in full. If you have any questions regarding the TBC series,
please do not hesitate to contact me directly at

Ridinger shatters the pins for a huge
877 series in Bud Light at Valley
Josh Ridinger had what he called “It was a once in alifetime, everything
went just right.” Josh was talking about his huge 877 series shot in the
Bud Light league at Vallely Lanes in Beaverton.
Josh shot games of 300-279 and 298. In his last game (298) he left the
3-9 on the last ball and in the middle game (279) left the 10 pin in the 6th
frame.
The former junior bowler had a previous high of 858 shot while in the
juniors. He now bowls just one league a week and is currently averaging
225. “I used to bowl a lot but have cut down to just one league with an
occasional swiss tournament.”

Triangle Bowl
remodel done
Work has been completed
on a major overhaul at Triangle Bowl in Longview.
The center teamed up with
Brunswick and has installed
new Brunswick Vector
Scoring Systems with flat
screen LCD screens measuring 32”. Along with new
scoring, new masking units
were installed, new Inline ball
returns and more tables and
seating in the settee area.
Automatic bumpers for
family bowling were also put
in, sure to be a hit with the
youngsters. The remodel
was accomplished without
interruption of league bowling.
This August (2007) Triangle will be celebrating it’s
50th anniversary as a bowling center in Longview.
Original owners were Jack
James, Jack Demers and
Ernie Erickson.
Bob Adams was the mechanic in 1957 and Bob is
still working the machines
today. The center opened
with 16 lanes and added
more with subsequent expansion and remodels to the
present 32 lanes.

Lewis wins NWBT
at Valley Lanes
$2,000 ADDED MONEY
The NWBT held it’s second event of the 2007 season at
Valley Lanes. When the smoke cleared and the event was
complete, Brad Lewis was crowned the Tournament Champion.
With the win, Lewis defended his title from last year at Valley
Lanes. Great job Brad!
After 4 games of qualifying, the field was narrowed down
to the three top competitors of the day. Brad Lewis lead all
scorers with a 945, James Frisbie followed with a 928, and Ryan
Youngberg rounded our the trio with a 925. There were many
bowlers who
kept the pressure
on and fell just
short of making
the cut. Steve
Rocha, Patrick
Lagrimas and
Chris Fritz were
all in contention
going into the 4th
game
of
qualifying.
Ryan
Yo u n g b e r g
gathered some
momentum
before going into
the match play
during the
”Second Chance Bonus Pot” , a new progressive side pot held
right after qualifying. Youngberg rolled 4 strikes on 4 different
lanes trading up a half entry on the second strike and full entry on
the third strike to win 60% of the pot to pocket a nice $132.
What a nice payout to pocket before entering the Match Play
portion of the tournament. The Second Chance Bonus is truly a
fun side-pot to watch and to bowl. It is quickly becoming a
favorite among the bowlers.
Youngberg carried that momentum through match
play taking the 1st place seed away from Brad Lewis
going into the stair step finals. Lewis showed his fight
during the first game of the finals by besting James
Frisbie (3rd Place) 230-195. The Final game of the
stair finals brought Lewis to face Youngberg. Lewis
had only a 9 pin advantage going into the game. It
came down the last two frames during this tight match

“Just ask Vahn”
Vahn who?
(Editors note)Vahn Stone has been working in the bowling industry since 1969. He now lives in Tigard, Oregon and travels
many states working on pinsetters. With over 30 years in this business, he has a lot of knowledge to pass along to make your
job easier. In 1993, Vahn went to Seoul, South Korea to help design and engineer the new Dacos pinsetter. In July of 2006
he was flown to the private resort of Anthony Robbins in Fiji to work on his center. He returned there in January of 2007 to
finish the work, just after Survivor Fiji was filmed there. He now takes care of over 300 machines in 5 states with the help of
his sons who are also very proficient in the business. Mr. Stone trains mechanics at centers, sells parts, teaches preventative
maintenance, and is a trouble-shooting expert. He also rebuilds gearboxes, sub-assemblies, detectors, and delivers and
installs them. He has a wide variety of built up sub-assemblies on hand for emergencies for many types of Brunswick
pinsetters. Often in his travels an owner will relay a story from his mechanic who will say “just ask Vahn” so that is why he’s
calling his column by the same name.
You can contact Vahn at 503-816-3980 or
at jvahnstone@verizon.net.
Quick checks to spot
problems before
they do some damage:
Rake Shock for A-2 style pinsetters:
You can easily spot a bad rake shock if the pinsetter
has not been used for a couple of hours. When
the first ball is thrown, the rake drops very fast the
first time, and then it will run normal. This means
the shocks insides are starting to give out. Check
to see if you have a spare as this condition can
sometimes last a long time before it gives out. Also,
you might see brake fluid in the flat gutter
underneath the shock. Please make sure that the
top of the rake shock pivot point bolt is tight. Test
this by putting the rake down, and then lift the rake
board up and down an inch or so either way while
looking at the rake shock bolt. It should not move.
Then cycle the pinsetter to 45 degrees, shut the
setter off and make sure your trip shaft gap is 1/
64th of an inch or the thickness of a match. After
you have done this, feel free to check them all.
If you have A style pinsetters this article is not
for you. But, if you have 90 degree over-travel on
you’re a style pinsetters, get rid of it as soon as
possible! It should have been removed years ago
as it can really tear your pinsetter up long before
its’ time.

Ernie Gerald
Ernie Gerald is a resident of
Longview, a longtime bowler and
reader of The Van-Port Bowling
News. Prior to moving to Longview
several years ago Ernie had seen
copies of The Van-Port and emailed
us and we began a friendship that
continued when he moved up here.
Ernie fits The Van-Port perfectly,
he has a love of bowling and for the
bowlers. So watch for Ernies
Longview/Kelso news as a monthly
feature of The Van-Port. Stories
on this page are by Ernie as well as
a bowler profile elsewhere in this

A Young Boys Love of Bowling
Talon Schlauch of Longview is one of the most intent junior
prep bowlers I have ever seen. Talon has a huge heart and
desire to bowl well. No problem with keeping an eye on the
ball until it hits the pins! He reminds me of a crawfish
backing up as he returns to his starting point while watching
his ball travel down the lane. When he gets a mark, your
hands will sting from his high-five. Talon has a high game of
144 so far this season. Look for Talons bowling talent in
future years. Is this the future of bowling?
I certainly hope so!

Bowlers
Allen and his Father Tom White are two of our top average bowlers in
this area. Tom’s current two league average is 234, 233. Allen’s is 232,
227. Tom is one of the best left handed bowlers in the northwest. His
son Allen is also one of the best, although he did not inherit Dads trait of
being left handed. We need many Father/Son bowlers to help insure the
future of bowling! Bowling is the most rewarding indoor year
r ound sport a Father and Son can do together.

St. Helens tournament
set to “Blow” May 18th
Have you ever gone to a tournament and shot your best series in the team event? Or maybe you shot
your best series in doubles and your partner didn’t come through . . . .or vice versa? Well now there’s a
tournament that will reward you for those scores no matter what your partners or team mates did.
With the May 18th advent of it’s 27th edition, the Mt. St. Helens Tournament will now be offering
optional singles in team and singles in doubles events.
Hilander Bowl proprietor Jim Springer picked up
on the idea while networking with East Coast
proprietors who have been offering separate singles
in team and doubles events in their tournaments for
decades.
“I thought it sounded like a great incentive and
motivator when I first heard about it,” Springer
said. “For an extra $10.00 bowlers can enter these
separate singles events by using their team or
doubles scores. What’s really great is that these are
totally separate singles events, so anyone might
actually cash in 3 separate
singles events in one tournament,” Springer went on to
say.
“Tournament bowlers are
always looking for something
else to buy into when they’re
bowling,” Springer added.
Since the Mt. St. Helens
Tournament offers a variety of
events and mixed categories,
bowlers could cash in up to 6 different singles
competitions.
Entry forms are now available at most Washington and Oregon centers. As he has for nearly 3
decades, Springer makes a 1400 mile trek personally visiting over 100 centers distributing posters
and entry forms.
“The personal touch is what has really made our
tournament the big success that it is,” Springer
proudly states. “We’ve
had over 200 teams and 1,000 singles and doubles
entries since our 3rd year.”
In addition to the new singles in team and
doubles feature which will be available in all
divisions, the tournament includes separate division
of Men’s Teams (all men), Women’s Teams (all
women), Mixed Teams (2 men+2 Women), Men’s
Doubles and Singles, Women’s Doubles and
Singles, Mixed Doubles and Singles and associated
all events. All events are handicap but there are
optional scratch single and scratch doubles available for an additional prize entry fee of $10.00. The
tournament also runs an abundance of both scratch
and handicap brackets on most squads.
The Mt. St. Helens Tournaments runs weekends
from May 18th through July 29th at Hilander bowl in
Kelso, WA. While the tournament is a walk-in event,
reservations are recommended as many squads fill
rapidly with perennial players. Phone reservations are
available at 360-423-1500.
