HOLIDAY HOMEWORK (2015 – 16) Class-IV NURTURE NATURE Dear students Summer Vacations have begun, spelling fun & frolic! Holidays are set to be a break from studies, explanations and completing tasks. Keeping yourself engaged to beat the scorching heat, we bring you a series of constructive and enjoyable activities, to inculcate innovativeness, creativity and interest. It will surely enhance your personality and your learning process. Also in your vacation time, do the following:Read books as they help to reinvent your creative talent and deal with the challenges that lie ahead….Make use of this skill to enhance your creativity. Go for walks with the family. You will realize you have two of God’s greatest gifts…. NATURE and your FAMILY. Lend a helping hand to your parents and grandparents. You do need some exercise, don’t you? Go for cycling, play badminton, cricket…… anything that will make you burn those extra calories….. Have a great holiday and enjoy yourself to your heart’s content. 1 From Sets A and B, select and do any one set of your choice. Present your work on A3/A4 coloured sheets. Put it in a folder made out of recycled paper. SET – A 1) Take a walk around the lush greens at Lodhi Garden. As you enter, you will find a massive board which has the names of various birds found there. This summer, transform your balcony or terrace into a bird’s paradise by creating a bird feeder of your own and get ready to make many new winged friends! Suggestions: Use old plastic bottles to make your bird feeder. Make holes in the bottle for the spoons and be sure that you angle the spoons downward so that the birdfeed will drizzle onto them. You can take help of your elders to make holes in the bottle. You may decorate birdfeed with beads, small bells etc. 2 4) The house sparrow is a small bird, it has a typical length of 16 cm (6.3 in) and a weight of 24–39.5 g (0.85–1.39 oz). Now a days you do not see the sparrows in the city.House Sparrow populations have declined since 1977. Although the reasons for the decline of House Sparrows in farmland habitats are well-understood, we still need to find out more about what has been happening to them. Join the mission to save sparrows and find out at least five reasons of their decline. Design a logo to save the wild life and the forests of India. Refer to the image. 5) During your visit to a garden you must have seen various birds and animals. You will be amazed to know that figures of such animals can be made using tangrams. A tangram is made of seven shapes that you can arrange to make a different shape. All the pieces must be used and none of them can overlap. It's easy to make your own tangram. Then see how many unique arrangements you can come up with! Things you will need: coloured square paper, glue, chart paper, scissors Making a Tangram puzzle Start with a square paper (6” × 6”) and divide it into the shapes shown with a ruler and a pen to make tangram puzzles. Paste the tangram puzzles made by you on a chart paper and cut the tangram puzzle into seven pieces. Use these tangram pieces to make various animals of your choice. Draw a scene of a garden and paste the animal tangrams prepared by you on the scenery. Here are some animal tangrams shown in the image. The Horticulture department of Noida has decided to put the plantation of Alstonia scholaris trees on hold for now. Reason: the tree, due to its particular smell, can cause problems for asthma patients. This was the news item in The Indian Express. Taking the support of this news the residents of one of the neighbourhoods of Delhi got one Alstonia tree cut partially. Some of the residents did not like it because trees are our life line. What do you think about the decision of cutting the tree? What other alternative can you suggest? Sow them in a small pot or in a nearby park and observe their growth. 2) While walking down Lodhi Gardens, you happen to meet a gardener. Take a short interview listing the activities he involves himself in taking care of the flora and fauna. Click photographs of the interview taken by you. 4 4) Vanamahotsava is a tree planting festival. India is the first country in the world to have started this campaign to save mother Earth. The concept of this great festival for the nature lover was first initiated by the Union Minister for Food & Agriculture in the year 1950. How can this festival promote a responsible attitude towards nature? What are the ways in which you feel you can create awareness among the students in the school? Write at least 7 points in support of your answer. Create attractive and encouraging slogans to motivate society towards tree planting and taking care of plants. Slogans should be colorful and picturesque. 5) People like travelling to admire nature’s beauty and spend time with their family. Prepare a travel brochure about a country or city you would like to visit / you have visited. You may also use information from the Internet / books. Make an attractive, interesting and informative brochure. Don’t forget the pictures!!! TO BE DONE BY ALL, 1) Books are not lifeless papers. They are lighthouses erected in the great sea of time. Ruskin Bond is a famous author known for his love for nature. Given below are books written by him. Read any one of the following. Draw a sketch of your favourite character and write about any one character you liked the most and one whom you did not like in the book, in a graphic organizer. The image of two graphic organizers are given below. Picture A can be used to present the favourite character and Picture B to present the character you did not 5 like. The blank boxes in the pictures can be used to write the title and the author of the book read. Imagine a family of 4 adults are planning a trip to watch the Flora and Fauna of this state. They are visiting Kerala from New Delhi for 7 days. Solve the problems given below to calculate their total cost for the entire week. 6 a) Air fare: a single round ticket for one adult costs 9000. How much is the total air fare for 4 adults? b) Package tour: the family decided to take a packaged tour for the entire week. The package included the hotel stay on a double room sharing basis and travel by taxi in and around Kerala. The room was given at a cost of 2500 per day. Two such rooms were booked for the entire week. The local travel cost the family 20000 for the week. Calculate the total cost of the package tour. c) Lunch: the family spends around them on lunch that week? 2000 everyday on lunch. What is the amount spent by d) Shopping: the family went to the local market to shop for souveniers and traditional clothes. Their bill amounted to a total of 13482. One of them paid an amount of 15000 to the shopkeeper. How much money should he get back? e) Dinner: the family went out for dinner to a five star restaurant. Their total amount was 5460. They also had to pay a service charge of 485. Find the total bill amount. f) Total amount spent on holiday: Find out the total expenditure the family spent on their holiday.
