ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM MISSION The mission of the UT APE Program is to provide high quality graduate courses that empower teachers with the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind to (a) enhance adapted physical education instruction in a variety of settings and (b) prepare teachers to participate in the professional dialogue regarding adapted physical education. The courses have been designed by faculty to provide effective learning experiences that empower graduate students to move from theory to best teaching practices, to engage in critical thinking about adapted physical education issues, and to participate in lifelong professional development. Individuals at the center of their own learning Online Graduate Endorsement in Adapted Physical Education DISTANCE LEARNING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO The endorsement is offered completely online for licensed physical educators across the state of Ohio. The University of Toledo is regionally accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) and is authorized to offer degrees online. The University of Toledo is the largest provider of online courses among Ohio’s four-year institutions. The University of Toledo’s Division of Distance Learning has received the “Best Practices in Student Services” designation from the Ohio Learning Network. CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS The curriculum for the APE endorsement offers advanced course work in adapted physical education pedagogy, movement assessment, and collaborative partnerships. Courses are projectfocused and research-based and aligned with Ohio/AAHPERD and APENS Modified Standards. All course work for the endorsement may be applied towards a Master of Education in Physical Education (Adapted Physical Education track). The M.Ed in Physical Education (APE track) is also available to non-Ohio residents. Non-Ohio residents who take only distance learning courses pay the in-state tuition rate. PED 5170 ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3cr) (SUMMER I) Evidenced-based and philosophical pedagogy of teaching students with low incidence disabilities within a variety of adapted physical education settings is examined. Facilitates the application of appropriate pedagogy to implement current legislation. PED 5950 WORKSHOP IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3cr) (FALL) Critical examination of a variety of traditional and non-traditional assessment methods appropriate for children with disabilities in a variety of adapted physical education settings is explored. Provides practical experience using assessment methods and prepares the physical educator to participate on the IEP committee. SPED 5260 FAMILY AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (3cr) (SUMMER I) Effective parent and professional partnerships will be explored. Interpersonal communication skills, legal issues, effective models for homeschool communication, and differences in culture, values and family expectations will be discussed. PED 6940 INTERSHIP IN EXERCISE SCIENCE (3cr) (SPRING) Provides opportunities for field experience to use and refine the strategies for planning and implementing physical education services to children with disabilities. Completion of 140 adapted physical education internship hours required and may be completed via distance learning. Prerequisites: PED 5170 and PED 5950. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This endorsement is only available to licensed physical educators in Ohio. The M.Ed. in Physical Education (APE track) is available to licensed physical educators (residents and non-residents of Ohio). Documentation is required. Submit a completed online graduate application (special student status application) and pay the accompanying application fee. Students seeking to apply the courses from the endorsement to the M.Ed. in Physical Education (APE track) will need to complete the regular graduate student application form.
