TEACHING ASSISTANT POSITIONS The following Teaching Assistant (TA) positions are available for the Fall and Winter Terms 2015-16 in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Rate of pay for these positions is $38.41 per hour and duration of work is 12 weeks. Hours per week will be 8 unless otherwise noted. TAs will be required to complete online AODA and Health and Safety training. You will be reimbursed for the time spent completing this training. Note: TA hours per week constitute time allowed to be spent on non-thesis work and so would need to be considered in view of the 10 hours per week average allowed over the course of a year on non-thesis work. Students should note that they are still expected to meet all milestones for their own MSc/MPH/PhD work if they receive a teaching assistantship. The department requires that you speak with your supervisor before accepting any TA position. Students may apply for more than one position. Please note order of preference in your application letter. FOR FALL TERM 1. EPID 801 Introduction to Epidemiology, Instructor: Kristan Aronson The TAs will: 1) plan, prepare and lead tutorials and review sessions; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the epidemiological concepts; and 3) mark assignments and exams, and 4) have office hours to provide assistance to students. Prerequisites for this position: clear understanding and ability to communicate epidemiological concepts and applications, and demonstrated ability to work well with others. 2. EPID 821 Introductory Biostatistics, Coordinator: Michael McIsaac TA Duties will include: provide two hours of office time per week to assist students on an individual basis with biostatistics questions; two hours per week on homework marking, provide two hours per week to assist students during SAS lab and two hours running a tutorial section of EPID 821. Prerequisites for this position: successful completion of EPID 821 and EPID 822. 3. EPID 803 Health Services and Policy Applications: Instructor: Duncan Hunter. TA Duties will include: Work with the professor responsible for the course: 1) plan, prepare and lead tutorials and review sessions; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the concepts introduced during class and through readings; and 3) mark assignments and exams, and have office hours to provide assistance to students). No prerequisite classes required. 4. EPID 826 Determinants of Health: Instructor: to be announced TA duties will include: 8 hours per week to 1) evaluate mid-term and final assignments; 2) provide 2 hours of open office time per week 3) assist the professor in preparing any additional resource material for class as needed. 4) some possibility to assist in teaching depending on level of training and interest. Prerequisites: Relevant previous work on determinants of health/inequities in health; familiarity with relevant social epidemiology or public health concepts, some more in-depth knowledge of 1-2 specific areas, comfort with the moodle platform. 5. EPID 827 Public Health Leadership and Administration: Instructor: Erica Weir TA duties will include: Work with the professor responsible for the course to: 1) plan, prepare and coordinate group assignments; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the concepts introduced during class and through readings; and 3) assist professor with managing the Moodle platform and marking assignments 6. EPID 401, Biostatistical Data Analysis for Life Sciences Students. Instructor: Paul Peng Duties will include: Leading labs (teaching SPSS) and lab data practices (SPSS based); holding weekly office hour; Meeting with course instructor; preparing lab notes and solutions to data practices; marking lab data practices (5 data practices); marking homework assignments (4 assignments). 7. EPID 887, Public Health Practicums. Coordinator: Colleen Davison Duties will include: assist with the marking of the practicum reports. Each second year MPH student is required to submit a report following their practicum that is a maximum total length of 45 pages, all inclusive. Guidance and a marking rubric will be provided and approximately 2.5 hours per report (a total of 33) will be allocated for marking. The due date for submission of the MPH practicum reports is November 1st. The TA must be able to return marks and comments to students within one month. The TA will have additional very limited duties associated with providing basic written comments back to students, providing a spreadsheet of the final grades, and confirming submission of each of the final reports in electronic and printed formats Qualifications for this position: senior MSc or a PhD student. Second year MSc and MPH students are not eligible to apply. ____________________________________________________________________________________ FOR WINTER TERM 1. EPID 301 Principles of Epidemiology (undergraduate course), Instructors: Will Pickett Teaching assistant duties will include: helping the instructor with lecturing, setting and marking assignments and exams, leading some tutorial sessions and setting office hours to provide assistance to students. Details will be determined with instructor. Prerequisites for this position: successful completion of EPID 801, EPID 821 and EPID 804, a firm grasp of material covered in Intro to Epi and a demonstrated ability to clearly convey this material. 2. EPID 804, Intermediate Epidemiology, Instructors: Will King Duties will include office time per week to assist students on an individual basis with questions, marking of assignments, participation in class and sharing in the marking of mid-term exams. Prerequisites for this position: successful completion of EPID 801 and EPID 804. 3. EPID 812 Program Evaluation, Instructor: Duncan Hunter Duties will include: Work with the professor responsible for the course: 1) plan, prepare and lead tutorials and review sessions; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the concepts introduced during class and through readings; and 3) mark assignments and exams, and have office hours to provide assistance to students). 4. EPID 822 Intermediate Biostatistics, Coordinator: Paul Peng TA Duties will include: provide two hours of office time per week to assist students on an individual basis with biostatistics questions; two hours per week on marking homework assignments, two hours per week to assist students during SAS lab and two hours running a tutorial section Prerequisites for this position: successful completion of EPID 821 and EPID 822. 5. EPID 825 Foundations of Public Health Practice: Instructor: Megan Carter TA duties will include: Assist in marking student short assignments (x4); provide guidance to students in the preparation of major assignment (4 parts); assist in marking the major assignment components (two major papers, presentation, and abstract) ; assist in coordinating a student conference ; dedicated time averages out to 8 hours per week.
