HOW ARE YOU FEELING? Is a
major exhibition of new and recent
work by artist David Shrigley. The
exhibition features a range of
Shrigley’s drawings, alongside sitespecific work made specially for this
exhibition, and never-seen-before
live performance.
Many of the works in the show
require participation from the
audience in order to complete them.
Three sculptural beds invite you to
take time out and rest, relax or even
sleep; a sculpture of a naked figure
will be the focus for life-drawing
classes, with the resulting sketches
displayed alongside; and a seaside
‘peephole’ inspired installation will
be completed by audience
members putting their heads into
signposted holes. Visitors also have
the opportunity to perform in an
ongoing play with a script penned
by Shrigley. Actors will perform the
piece at set times throughout the
exhibition, but you can download
the script from our website to have a
go yourself!
DAVID
SHRIGLEY
Sat 6 Oct - Sun 6 Jan — Galleries 1, 2 & 3 — FREE
‘How Are You Feeling?’ is a familiar
phrase often used in self-help,
psychiatry and the diagnosis of
psychosis. For this exhibition,
Shrigley offers art therapy to help
you cope with “an increasingly crazy
and poorly signposted world”.
David Shrigley is best known for his
canny, farcical and deliberately
dysfunctional cartoon-like drawings
that observe everyday fears of the
human condition and conventional
social matters. Finding humour in
the bizarre and inconsequential with
immediate and attainable appeal,
his work often asks questions about
the nature of contemporary art and
its audience. He has an international
career spanning two decades and
had a weekly cartoon in The
Guardian’s Weekend Magazine
Curated by Mike Chavez-Dawson.
A new book published in tandem
with the exhibition, HOW ARE YOU
FEELING? will be for sale in the
bookshop for the special price of £10
during the exhibition (RRP £12.99).
See p.14 for details.

Hotel, Farrow & Ball and Absolut

Mike Chavez-Dawson,
curator of HOW ARE YOU
FEELING? delves into the
mind of David Shrigley.
different things, so now that
precedent is set some people see me
as some kind of Renaissance man.
I think part of it is that I am
unencumbered by craft skills; if I
was a really good painter, for example,
I’d probably be less inclined to make
work in different media. But I’m not
a good painter. I’m a terrible painter.
MCD: How are you feeling?
DS: OK. I just had a bowl of porridge.
MCD: For me the execution of your
work is never undermined by its
content, is this something you work
at or does in come naturally?
DS: I guess it comes naturally. I tend
to make work intuitively without
much preparation. That’s just the
way I do it.
MCD: Do you still feel being an
artist is a calling?
DS: I think it is for me, but I couldn’t
speak for anyone else.
MCD: What was your first artistic
epiphany?
DS: Perhaps going to the Tate Gallery
(what is now Tate Britain) when I
was about 14 years old. There was a
show of Jean Tinguely (the Swiss
kinetic sculptor). I guess this was my
first taste of contemporary art.
MCD: What were your first feelings
towards undertaking a show at
Cornerhouse, Manchester?
DS: I think Manchester is a good
town for me to do a show in. I did a
show in London earlier in the year,
so now it’s time to head north nearer
to the place of my birth. I was born
in Macclesfield. Did I tell you that?
MCD: The thematic of ‘How Are You
Feeling?’ is multi-layered but has
obvious associations with ‘selfhelp’ and ‘psycho-therapy’. How
much of this has shaped your
approach?
DS: I was interested in the
possibility that the works could
have some kind of therapeutic
value. I felt like the audience might
get more from the art to this end if
they were able to interact with it. So
most of the works I’m making
require the audience to participate
in order for them to function.
Make Yourself Happy, 2012.
MCD: Your works have an uncanny
knack of being applicable to any
given format?
DS: I make cartoons of a certain sort
that people find amusing.
If I made a different type of work it
probably wouldn’t get put on
greetings cards, etc. Beyond that I’m
willing to give most things a try, so
I’ve ended up making music and
opera and adverts and whatnot.
I’ve set a precedent for doing lots of
MCD: Having worked together with
you on various projects over the
years, your methodology of ‘intuitive’
without much ‘preparation’ has
certainly been a leap of faith, has it
always worked for you and would
you recommend it?
DS: It’s hard to say how I got to the
point where I’m at. I’ve never had a
strategy. I’ve just learned what I’ve
learned from experience. But I think
there is a recipe for success as an
artist and it is thus:
2 parts self-confidence
1 part arrogance
1 part stupidity
If one can formulate these measures
within oneself then one has a better
chance of success.
MCD: If you weren’t an artist what
would you be or like to do?
DS: I’ve given various answers to
this question over the years.
The one I currently favour is dentist.
MCD: You have done a series of
sculptural works of loose teeth –
usually molars, there is even a giant
brass piece, and then the series
with multiple holes drilled in them,
is this a sensitive issue for you?
DS: Dreaming about bad stuff
happening to your teeth is a classic
sign of anxiety. So perhaps the
works I’ve made with teeth are
about anxiety. My teeth are actually
pretty healthy. But I do sometimes
suffer from anxiety.
MCD: There are going to be
anxiety-busting works in this
show, can you elaborate?
DS: I’m planning that all the works
will be helpful in this respect, but
I’m not a doctor or a therapist so I
can offer no guarantee of success. I’d
like to have a place within the show
where people can take a nap. I think
that will be helpful.
MCD: You are tackling performance
within this exhibition, how do you
envisage the outcome?
DS: I want to do something different
from what I normally do in the
exhibition space and have a bit of fun.
I would like to make something that
the audience can interact with, so
that the audience can participate in
the performance. I’m thinking along
the lines of a performance acted by
volunteers, so anyone can take part.
I’m not quite sure of the logistics just
yet, but we’ll see how it works out.
MCD: So with these new works the
viewer will become integral to the
completion of them: no viewers
actively taking part = incomplete
work?
DS: I suppose so. These will be
artworks that need you. It’s good to
be needed.
MCD: What engages you about the
potential of performance?
D: I was involved in creating an opera
last year and that was my first taste
of live performance. I think what I
like about is that it is a different way
to tell a story; most of my work
employs or suggests some kind of
narrative, so live performance seems
like a thing I need to try.
MCD: What are the top three
questions that you have been asked
– that might be useful to gaining an
insight into your psyche?
DS: Whenever anyone talks about
gaining an insight into my psyche I
get nervous. Why do they want to
look into my psyche? I’m boring. I
really don’t think my psyche is
interesting at all. If I was Charles
Manson or someone like that then I
could understand people being
interested: but I’m not. Sometimes I
feel like my artwork hasn’t come from
me but from somewhere else. It’s
like something I found. It belongs to
me, but it didn’t come from me; I’m
just the one who dug it up and
showed it to people.

Using a mix of individual and group
exercises, these fun workshops with
artist Jim Medway show you how to
create your own characters and
bring them to life. Inspired by David
Shrigley’s deceptively simplistic
illustrations, the basic elements of
visual storytelling are explored, from
composing panels to depicting
emotion, action and situation. With
an emphasis on communication,
simplicity and clarity rather than
drawing skills, individuals with very
little art confidence can produce
great results.

Britain’s best-loved satirical TV

TV Burp presenter says of David
Shrigley’s work, “I like the homemade aesthetic. He does what a lot

profound and subversive. He’s a true
outsider who has somehow snuck
under the wire, which is how I feel
about my own shtick.”

Following on from the huge success
of Sketch-O-Matic last year, when
40+ artists, illustrators, poets, doodlemakers and pen-smiths created
instant-ish portraits of almost 1,000

You are invited to sit inside the booth
as if for a photograph and make a

we’ll also be welcoming lots of new artists to capture your visage for posterity.

Composite: Feedback is a multimedia

curated by Liverpool’s Mercy, mixing

one self generating feedback loop. It’s
a beautiful and absurd experiment,
where the performers and array of
interfaces are thrown into a
productive conflict. The event is split
into three sections, beginning with
short talks and performances,
followed by a feedback workout,
pushing the performers into a state
of continual improvisation.

Fraser Chapman
Fri 16 Nov – Sun 6 Jan
FREE, Café & Bar
For this show Manchester-based Fraser Chapman is
presenting two bodies of work. In the Bar are a series of large
colourful disk shaped paintings that map the different rock
types found on the moon. They are accurate depictions of the
geological makeup of the lunar surface, originally visualised by
the astronomical community. Chapman has taken these maps
and adjusted the colours, playing with their graphic potential. In
the Café are a series of small mass-produced canvases of the
kind typically found in thrift stores. Fraser has ‘added’ to them
by ‘subtracting’ their content. What is left are floating
indications of the total scene, now hidden under a flat surface
of white paint. Chapman is highly active in Manchester as an
artist and supporter of creative practice, through his nomadic
shop ‘Grotto’.

Sightseers is an endlessly enjoyable film for viewers with a
wicked sense of humour, and this pitch black comedy
cements Ben Wheatley’s growing reputation as a talent to
watch. Chris and Tina are a loved-up couple setting off on
their first holiday together. Tina is desperate to escape her
sheltered life with her meddling mother, and Chris can’t
wait to share the delights of a caravanning holiday. But it
doesn’t take long for the eccentric couple’s romantic
bubble to burst, and litterbugs and irritating caravan
neighbours meet a sticky end when the trip turns nasty.
We are pleased to welcome
Sightseers star and co-writer Steve
Oram, for this special advance
preview of the film followed by a
post-screening Q&A. A hit at the
2012 Cannes Film Festival, this film
is must-see for British film fans and
showcases the talents of two Brit
comedy scene regulars.

stylish crime drama with a dark
sense of humour. Set in a hyperbrutal New Orleans, the film follows

Leos Carax’s eccentric and
kaleidoscopic Holy Motors was the
talk of this year’s Cannes Film
Festival where it was in competition
for the Palme d’or. This fascinating
feature sees Carax’s long-time
collaborator Denis Lavant as a
shadowy character who segues
between different parallel lives: at
one point he’s an assassin, then a
beggar, a businessman and a family
man. Carax creates a bizarre
cinematic world that bewitches and
enthrals the viewer.

Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s
comedy-drama Untouchable took
the French box office by storm when
it was released in November 2011.
Paralysed from the neck down
following a paragliding accident,
millionaire Philippe lives a quiet life in
a stylish Parisian apartment. When he
hires Driss, a forthright ex-con as his
carer, their unlikely friendship and
growing bond give Philippe a new
lease of life. Omar Sy was awarded the
Best Actor César for his performance
as Driss, beating The Artist’s Jean
Dujardin to the coveted prize.
A much-anticipated adaptation of
Jack Kerouac’s iconic beat novel
from The Motorcycle Diaries director
Walter Salles. Following a bout of
illness and not long after the death
of his father, aspiring young writer
Sal Paradise meets the charming yet
unreliable Dean Moriarty. The pair
immediately form a strong and
enduring friendship, which takes
them and Dean’s liberated young
wife Marylou out on the road – in
pursuit of freedom, inspiration and
new experiences.

This captivating American indie
follows six-year-old Hushpuppy who
lives with her irritable and sickly
father, Wink, in the isolated Bayou
community they call the ‘Bathtub’.
Cut off from the wider world by a
sprawling levee, Hushpuppy is a
spirited and imaginative child who
lives an independent and
impoverished life with only loose ties
to her often-absent father. When a
giant storm reminiscent of Hurricane
Katrina threatens to destroy their
already precarious homes, and raise
ancient creatures from their slumber,
Hushpuppy, Wink and their ragtag
group of eccentric friends fight to
save their way of life.

mothers’ frustrated domesticity.
Sally Potter’s coming-of-age tale

excellent performances from the

Petzold’s latest feature is an intense
Cold War drama that deftly negotiates
the personal and the political. It is
the summer of 1980 and young
doctor Barbara (the excellent Nina
Hoss) has requested an exit visit
from the GDR. Punished by the
authorities for her desire to leave for
the West, Barbara is sent to work out
in the sticks, far from the capital. It is
in this rural hospital that Barbara
meets Andre, her puzzling new
boss, and Stella, the young runaway
whom she is desperate to protect.
Audiard’s Rust and Bone is a tale of
two very different people coming to
terms with dramatic life changes. Ali
has always been a distant father, but
when he must take care of his fiveyear-old son alone for the first time,
he struggles with the responsibility.
Homeless, penniless and friendless
he moves from northern France to
Antibes to take refuge with his sister.
There Ali encounters Stephanie, a
beautiful and talented animal trainer
who dismisses his advances. But
when Stephanie is the victim of a
terrible accident, Ali and Stephanie
are reunited and his no-nonsense
approach is life-changing.

Michael Haneke’s stunning 2012
Cannes Film Festival Palme d’or
winner is a powerful and deeply
moving film, which details the tender
and loving relationship between two
elderly musicians. Anne and
George’s happy marriage is tested
when Anne suffers a series of
devastating strokes and George
insists on caring for her at home, a
decision their daughter (played by
the wonderful Isabelle Huppert) fails
to understand. But the couple
continue with their life, creating an
increasingly private world, and their
long-standing devotion to each
other is unshakeable. Haneke’s film
is a masterwork which boasts a
heartrending portrayal of Anne’s
physical and mental decline from
Emmanuelle Riva.
Primary school teacher Lucas is
trying to rebuild his life following a
bitter divorce. When one of his
young pupils makes accusations of
abuse, the adults in the closely-knit
rural community rapidly and

Optic, Manchester’s up-andcoming cult film night, are pleased
to present this special late night
screening of 1990s classic
Braindead, in all its original 35mm
glory. Before his epic Lord of the
Rings trilogy, director Peter
Jackson capped off his early
career with Braindead (also known
as Dead Alive). All is quiet and
peaceful in 1950s New Zealand, as
young Timothy leads a simple and
idyllic life domineered by his
overbearing mum. However, things
soon get complicated when he
falls for the local shopkeeper’s
daughter. Throw in a rabid
Sumatran rat-monkey, hordes of
zombies, a kung fu priest, the line
“Your mother ate my dog” and
some really nasty custard, and you
have this fantastically gory, silly
and funny masterpiece.
To help get the Halloween party
started, and to celebrate this oneoff late nighter, there will be a
licensed bar in Cinema 1 plus some
pre-screening surprises.

Simon Russell Beale takes the title
role in Shakespeare’s strange fable
of consumption, debt and ruin,
written in collaboration with Thomas
Middleton. Wealthy friend to the rich
and powerful, patron of the arts,
ostentatious host, Timon of Athens
is surrounded by free-loaders and
sycophants. He vastly outspends
his resources but, finding his coffers
empty, reassures his loyal steward
that all will be well. When he calls
upon his associates, instead of
offering help, they hang him out to
dry. After a final, vengeful banquet,
Timon withdraws to a literal and
emotional wasteland, living off roots
and pouring curses on a morally
bankrupt Athens.
Academy Award nominee and Tony
Award-winner John Lithgow (Dirty
Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock
from the Sun) takes the title role in
Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious
Victorian farce, The Magistrate,
directed by Oscar winner Timothy
Sheader (Crazy for You and Into the
Woods, Regent’s Park Open Air
Theatre, London). When amiable
magistrate Posket (John Lithgow)
marries Agatha (Oscar winner Nancy
Carroll, After the Dance), little does
he realise she’s dropped five years
from her age – and her son’s. When
her deception looks set to be revealed,
it sparks a series of hilarious
indignities and outrageous mishaps.

has lots of problems and an overly
fertile imagination. In the summer of
1968, Leon’s mother decides to
abandon everything and everyone
behind in Quebec to start a new life
in Greece, leaving Leon prepared to
do anything to kill the pain. His preteenage rebellion sees him trash the
neighbours’ house and take his first
steps towards falling in love.
The Martinique-born director,
Euzhan Palcy, was just 25 years old
when she directed this influential
adaptation of Joseph Zobel’s, Black
Shack Alley. Set in Martinique in
1930, Black Shack Alley (also known
as Sugar Cane Alley) tells the story
of a grandmother’s battle for her
orphaned, eleven-year-old grandson
José to receive a good education
and escape a life toiling in the fields.
When Jose wins a scholarship, she
is ready to sacrifice everything for
his chance at a new life.

village in sub-Saharan Africa. After
her village is burned down by rebels
and her parents are killed, twelveyear-old Komona is forced into the
jungle as a child soldier. The rebel
soldiers see her survival of the

powers, which they intend to use for

The French colonial empire once
covered large parts of Asia, Africa,
North America and the Caribbean.
Wherever those early colonialists
went they planted Francophone
culture and nurtured it lovingly.
Today most of that empire has gone
but Francophone culture remains in
place, often vigorously supported by
cultural agencies in France. Our
evening course will explore
Francophone cinema from around
the world focusing specifically on
filmic portrayals of growing up in an
environment which is ‘local’ and

Based on real-life events experienced
by filmmaker Valérie Donzelli and
co-star/writer Jérémie Elkaïm,
Declaration of War tells of a young
Parisian couple suddenly dragged
from their carefree existence by an
unexpected twist of fate. Their 18month-old toddler Adam is
undergoing a series of tests and
treatments and is receiving
increasingly frightening diagnoses.
The film is told from the point of view
of Adam’s young parents as they
enlist a compassionate army of
parents, in-laws and friends to storm
the opaque world of the medical
establishment. Both a critical and
box office hit in France as well as
internationally, Declaration of War
was selected as France’s entry for
the 2012 Oscars.
Revered director Cédric Kahn has
created a heartfelt drama about love
and ambition during a time of
recession. Guillaume Canet, a noted
actor (Last Night) as well as director
(Little White Lies, Tell No One) plays
Yann, a trained chef who can’t find
work in any Paris restaurants due to
his lack of experience. He meets
Nadia and together with her young
son they ambitiously plan to open a
restaurant in a derelict building by a
lakeside. The film is remarkable in
the way it speaks about how love
and dedication can persevere
against the odds in any era.

A sleepy American suburban town
gets a rude awakening in this classic
80s comedy horror. Teenager Billy
gets more than he bargains for when
caring for his exotic new pet goes
catastrophically wrong. Accidentprone Billy has just three simple
rules to follow, but his failing on all
three counts results in cute mogwai
Gizmo being joined by a band of
malevolent, mischievous gremlins
and all hell breaks loose.
Screening from the original 35mm
print, don’t miss this one-off
opportunity to catch this cult classic
on the big screen.
Elf is a delightful fantasy comedy
that follows the fish-out-of-water
story of Buddy; an oversized elf who
leaves the North Pole for Manhattan
in search of his real family, after
realising he is in fact a human
inadvertently raised as an elf. Under
the watchful eye of writer/director
Jon Favreau, Will Ferrell’s
performance as loveable man-child
Buddy is played with supreme
comedic skill. With a tongue in
cheek story and accessible humour
for children and adults alike, Elf is a
true modern Christmas classic.

New York’s Thanksgiving parade.
Proving to be a roaring success with
the crowds, he is hired by Macy’s to

enthusiasm for his job appears to go
a little too far and he begins to claim
to be the real thing, he is put on trial
by the non-believers for insanity. His
only hope of salvation lies with a little
girl whose no-nonsense mother
taught her that Santa doesn’t exist.
Tim Burton’s masterpiece is a
magical and romantic reinterpretation
of the Frankenstein story. Edward’s
inventor unfortunately dies before he
finishes his creation, leaving him to
grow up alone in an eerie castle with
cumbersome blades in place of his
hands. A humble and gentle soul,
Edward eventually makes contact
with the real world and what ensues
is a delightfully pastel-coloured
vision of an outsider trying to fit in.
An emotional and unforgettable

Bertrand Tavernier's stunningly
prophetic sci-fi noir Death Watch is a
breathtaking blend of genres that
plays out like a mad trip into the
heart of Big Brother. Set in Glasgow,
the film follows Roddy who has a
camera implanted in his eye. He's
been hired by a television producer
to film a documentary of terminally ill
Katherine, without her knowledge.
The resulting footage will then be run
on the popular TV series, ‘Death
Watch’. Don’t miss this underrated
and rarely seen classic of European
cinema.
One of the master’s finest, the story
of Hitchcock’s Rear Window is
simple: a photographer stranded in
his sweltering flat, due to a broken
leg, takes to observing the
neighbours in the facing windows to
alleviate his boredom. When he
thinks he’s witnessed a murder, he
elicits the aid of his chic girlfriend
(played by the ever demure Grace
Kelly) and his nosy cleaner. Through
brilliant use of images Hitchcock
revels in his own fascination with
voyeurism – both on screen and in
the audience.
