Introduction
ISU Credo
We, the founders of the International Space University, do
hereby set forth this Credo as the basis for fulfilling ISU’s
goals and full potential.
International Space University is an institution founded
on the vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and boundless
future through the study, exploration, and development
of Space for the benefit of all humanity.
ISU is an institution dedicated to international cooperation,
collaboration, and open, scholarly pursuits related to
outer space exploration and development. It is a place
where participants and faculty from all backgrounds
are welcomed; where diversity of culture, philosophy,
lifestyle, training, and opinion are honored and nurtured.
ISU is an institution that recognizes the importance of
interdisciplinary studies for the successful exploration
and development of space. ISU strives to promote an
understanding and appreciation of the Cosmos through
the constant evolution of new programs and curricula in
relevant areas of study. To this end, ISU will be augmented
by an expanding base of campus facilities, networks, and
affiliations both on and off the Earth.
ISU is an institution dedicated to the development of
the human species, the preservation of its home planet,
the increase of knowledge, the rational utilization of the
vast resources of the Cosmos, and the sanctity of Life in
all terrestrial and extraterrestrial manifestations. ISU is a
place where participants and scholars seek to understand
the mysteries of the Cosmos and apply their knowledge to
the betterment of the human condition. It is the objective
of ISU to be an integral part of humanity’s movement
into the Cosmos, and to carry forth all the principles and
philosophies embodied in this Credo.
This, then, is the credo of ISU.
For all who join ISU, we welcome you to a new and growing
family. It is hoped that each of you, as leaders of industry,
academia, and government will work together to fulfill
the goals set forth herein. Together, we shall aspire to the
Stars with wisdom, vision, and effort.

Welcome to ISU Space Studies Program 2015
In order to provide equal opportunities
to participants, a basic principle was
adapted in ISU from the beginning
onwards to hold the Space Studies
Program (SSP) sessions each year in
a different country, possibly even on
a different continent. The selection
of the host site is based upon an
Announcement of Opportunity, and the proposals are
then evaluated by a number of experts.
One of the important elements, besides this
aforementioned rotation principle, is of course the
vicinity of space organizations and academia. Athens Ohio
was well placed in this context having an outstanding
University involved in space activities, but also due to
the vicinity of the NASA Glenn space center, and was
consequently selected.
This aspect is important in order to have access to local
space experts for lectures and workshops, but also in
view of the diversification of professional visits during the
program. At each SSP talented local lecturers participate,
which then later continue to be involved in the different
ISU programs, contributing to the diversification of the
faculty. As a result of this, the SSP15 participants will
have the benefit of visits to a large number of space
related sites and the immense benefit to be hosted by a
university with a very vast experience in space activities.
With these prerequisites fulfilled, there is no doubt
that the session of 2015 will be a highly successful one.
Moreover, a recent analysis of the curriculum and a series
of very positive and constructive feedback sessions have
clearly highlighted the wish to reorient the program
towards New Space activities and Entrepreneurship and
we are sure the participants will appreciate this.
Overall, ISU has again this year made sure that a program
is offered which no doubt will make this summer in Ohio
a very rewarding and memorable one! I hope you will all
benefit a lot of this, and I am sure, as previously, that it
will prove to be a strong asset in your future careers!

Welcome to SSP15!
It is my pleasure to welcome everyone
to the 28th session of the ISU Space
Studies Program, hosted by Ohio
University in scenic Athens Ohio. The
Faculty, Staff and Local Organizing
Committee have been working
tirelessly for the past year to make this year’s SSP the
best ever, and we’ve prepared a program full of intense
academics, distinguished guest lecturers, insightful
professional visits, plentiful social activities, a touch of
hometown American hospitality, and a few surprises. For
anyone participating for the first time, you will find it to
be a once-in-a-lifetime event – 9 weeks of international,
interdisciplinary and intercultural experiences shared
with a group of people who share your passion for space
and your hope for the future.
Ohio University and the town of Athens form a perfect
backdrop for SSP15 – while in the classroom you will be
immersed in an academic program covering all things
space, but during off hours can enjoy the immense
natural beauty of Ohio and the college-town friendliness
of Athens. Orbits and trajectories will juxtapose with
hiking or cycling through the local national forests, and
astronauts will mingle with you at barbeque cookouts.
Our Ohio University hosts have worked diligently to
address every part of your experience, from dedicated
dining facility and residences, to world-class academic
facilities, to the hundreds of “small details” that will make
your experience memorable.
NASA’s Glenn Research Center is our partner for this
summer’s program, and will offer participants the
opportunity to visit both its facilities near Cleveland, Ohio
and its Plum Brook test facilities.
I look forward to personally getting to know all of you
during these 9 weeks, both in the classroom and at one
of our many social events. I cannot promise that you
will get enough sleep, or that the program will be free of
stress. But I can promise you will gain a new perspective
on all things space, and that after 9 weeks you’ll leave
exhilarated, tired, and part of an amazing new family.

SSP15 Host Institution
Ohio University
Ohio University holds as its central purpose the intellectual
and personal development of its students. Distinguished
by its rich history, diverse campus, international
community, and beautiful Appalachian setting, OHIO is
known as well for its outstanding faculty of accomplished
teachers whose research and creative activity advance
knowledge across many disciplines.
Chartered in 1804, OHIO is the oldest public institution
of higher learning in the state of Ohio. Located in
the southeastern region of the state of Ohio in the
Appalachian foothills, OHIO is recognized for its academic
relationships with international institutions and continues
to successfully pursue a global education agenda.
OHIO has a tradition of engaging undergraduates in
research, creative activity, and professional projects, and
the university’s approach to graduate education allows

The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering
and Technology shares OHIO’s rich history, with
engineering courses dating to the 1850s and technology
programs starting in the early 20th century. The college
was renamed in 1994 to honor devoted alumni Fritz J.
Russ and his wife, Dolores H. Russ, who bequeathed a
transformational $124 million gift to the college, still the
largest gift to any public engineering college in the U.S.
Their dedication to the profession of engineering, their
belief in its ability to change lives, and their generosity
allow the Russ College to educate future engineers who
work toward the greater good. In 2010, the Russ College
and the OHIO Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
unveiled the Academic and Research Center, a state-ofthe-art learning and research facility built with private
funding from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations and
alumni Charles R. and Marilyn Y. Stuckey. The Russ College
goes beyond the practical application of engineering
and technology to develop exceptionally well-prepared,

Welcome to Ohio University (OHIO)! We are delighted
to host the International Space University (ISU) 2015
Space Studies Program. OHIO has a rich history of
international education, and we welcome international
learners as an essential part of OHIO’s global mission to
foster transformative intercultural experiences. At OHIO,
just as at ISU, diversity of culture, philosophy, lifestyle,
training, and opinion is valued and nurtured. We are
honored by your presence and deeply appreciative of the
international opportunities for personal and professional
growth that this event will foster.
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC),
welcome to the campus of Ohio University and the city
of Athens! We’ve worked to ensure that the 2015 Space
Studies Program (SSP15) will engage and inspire you
throughout the greater Athens area and across the state of
Ohio. In our planning, we were motivated by the support,
collaboration, and cooperation from many organizations
and individuals from OHIO, the Athens community,
and International Space University -- all of whom have
brought their expertise to make SSP15 a success. We
hope you come to love our Appalachian college town and
its resources and natural beauty as much as we do.
While OHIO’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology
is the lead college in hosting the Space Studies Program,
our entire university community is committed to the

member since 1998, and as the leader of an engineering

Program Structure
Overview
The SSP is an intensive nine-week professional
development course for postgraduate participants, as
well as for young and seasoned professionals of all
disciplines. It is a unique educational experience with a
curriculum that covers the principal space-related fields,
both technical and non-technical. The topics range from
engineering, physical sciences, and space applications,
to life sciences, policy, management, business, and
humanities.
The shared experience of an international, intercultural,
and interdisciplinary working environment is an ideal
networking forum. The ISU alumni, numbering over 4,000
to date, along with the faculty members and visiting
lecturers, have created an extensive, international,
multidisciplinary professional network. Through the
exchange of ideas and information, this network has been
successful in advancing a range of projects - including
disaster warning and mitigation systems, human health
enhancement using space technologies, and solar system
exploration - and has contributed significantly to the
creation of one national space agency.
The interdisciplinary curriculum offered in the SSP, with
its emphasis on international cooperation, exposes
participants to broad new perspectives on world space
activities that might otherwise be reserved for those
with many years of diverse professional experience. The
program is packed with a wide variety of activities including
lectures by renowned experts, hands-on activities and
projects, team work assignments, and professional visits.
Each year the program evolves to better meet the needs
of the participants and their employers.
All ISU programs are conducted in English. Participants are
strongly encouraged to contribute their own knowledge,
experience, ideas, culture, and opinions, as well as their
energy and enthusiasm. It is expected that participants
reflect the ISU pedagogical approach and vision,
promoting interest in and respect for different cultures
and backgrounds.
The SSP is organized into three interrelated phases; Phase
I – Core Lecture Series; Phase II – Departmental Activities;
Phase III – Team Project.
The three phases are divided into academic elements on
which each participant’s performance is assessed. The
main academic elements for which assessment marks
are assigned include the Core Lecture quiz and exam,
Department performance, and the Team Project (TP)
performance. Each academic element includes a number
of sub-elements, which will be described in subsequent
sections of this Handbook. The workshop and theme day
academic elements are a key part of the program, but
these elements are not assigned performance marks.
Phase I: Core Lecture Series
The core curriculum of the SSP consists of the core lectures
and the fundamental workshops. The Core Lecture Series
and associated workshops ensure that participants
have a basic grounding and common knowledge in the
fundamentals of all the disciplines that are relevant to
space programs. It also serves to ensure that participants
understand the relationships among the various
disciplines in any space-related activity. All participants

attend the core lectures and fundamental workshops,
which create the basic framework of knowledge to
prepare them for informed and balanced judgment and
subsequent teamwork.
Each major aspect of space activity is presented in a
series of lectures designed primarily for non-experts;
thus, medical specialists can understand the lectures on
propulsion, and engineers and lawyers can understand
the lectures on the effects of weightlessness on the
human body. The lectures do not go into depth or enter
into significant detail in any subject, except, perhaps,
to illustrate a point. The great breadth and diversity
of the subjects means, however, that a large quantity
of material is covered. Many core lectures are grouped
around clusters or themes to highlight the interrelation
among disciplines. Questions by participants and group
discussions with the lecturers are encouraged.
Lecturers are expected to speak slowly and clearly, to
avoid colloquialisms, and to explain specialized language
or jargon. The lecturers greatly appreciate signals from
the participants when they begin to speak too quickly
or introduce difficult language without explanation. Feel
free to ask questions for clarification during the lectures.
As a study aid, PDF files of the core lecture presentations
are provided to all participants in electronic format upon
their arrival at registration.
Workshops (WS)
Fundamental and elective workshops are offered during
Phases I and II. All participants take part in the fundamental
workshops during the early weeks of the program. The
elective workshops are then offered in parallel.
SSP workshops are designed to enhance and complement
the knowledge acquired during the core lectures through
more active learning in smaller groups. The workshops
allow greater interaction and individual learning.
There are three fundamental workshops that are required
for all participants: Team Project Foundation Skills, Report
Writing and Presentation, and Orbital Mechanics STK.
Participants will rotate through each of these workshops
in their TP group.
Three or four core lectures are presented each day for a
period of four weeks, which requires a certain amount of
stamina on the part of the participants. At the end of the
Core Lecture Series, however, when the whole picture can
be pieced together, participants always agree that they
have gained a valuable, new, and exciting perspective on
space activities.
Elective workshops based on personal interests, which
provide opportunities to broaden interdisciplinary skills.
Participants must sign up for their selected workshops in
advance, using an online selection tool. Participants who
do not sign up will be assigned to a workshop. Descriptions
of all workshops are provided on page 36.
Lectures are 60 minutes in duration, including 10 minutes
reserved for questions. Lecturers know that their
presentations are aimed at non-specialists and that, for
many participants, English is not their first language.
Participants are expected to attend all lectures, including
the lectures in their own area of specialization. There
are two key reasons for this. First, it is important when
the teamwork activities begin that everyone knows
exactly what information on the various subjects has
been presented. Second, participants who are more
knowledgeable in a particular subject are better placed
to offer informal help to fellow participants who may be
experiencing difficulty.
Theme Days (TD)
Theme days are three-hour sessions dedicated to a current
theme or topic and comprise a series of presentations

and interactive discussions. Generally, a number of wellknown international experts address relevant and timely
topics from an interdisciplinary perspective. Interactive
discussions are often involved and provide an excellent
forum in which to discuss or debate key issues in the
space sector. Participants will choose from among two
different Theme Day offerings during each of two Theme
Days scheduled during Phase II.
Professional Visits (PV)
During some department slots, participants make
professional visits to space-related institutes and
organizations. The specific activities vary based on the
available local resources and the overall program plan
developed by the Department Chair.
Phase II: Department Focus
The SSP is structured around seven academic departments
and three TPs. This organization provides an anchor
that allows smaller groups of participants to focus on
a particular discipline of interest as they learn. Each
participant chooses a department during the first weeks
of the program.

• Space Sciences (SCI)
• Human Performance in Space (HPS)
• Space Applications (APP)
• Space Management and Business (MGB)
• Space Policy, Economics, and Law (PEL)
• Space Humanities (HUM)
Participants are encouraged to select a department
in which they may not have significant background or
expertise. At SSP, it is important to try new things to
broaden your background.
Specific departmental sub-elements include department
activity participation, individual or small team
assignments, and professional visits. Details for the
departmental activities and professional visits are
provided beginning on page 22.
Department Activities (DA)
The Departmental activities provide deeper examination
of some of the topics covered in the core. The groups
are smaller than in the core lectures, thus allowing for
exchange of knowledge, ideas, and opinions, as well as
hands-on activities. The department activity slots provide
an important opportunity for participants to interact
with faculty members, visiting lecturers, and Teaching
Associates to build their professional network. These
activities provide a means for participants to become
sensitized to the cultural differences that govern personal
interactions in a group setting, and to adapt and develop
presentation and negotiation skills in light of this cultural
diversity.

Individual or Small Team Assignments
The Department Chair will assign a short exercise,
experiment, or project to meet the requirements for the
department evaluation (see the Evaluation and Conduct
sections). This assignment will be fully explained to,
and developed with, each participant during a personal
interview with the Department Chair. The topic of the
individual or small team assignments will be coordinated
between the participant(s) and the Department Chair.
Assignments may be done individually or in small groups.
Assignments may take the form of an oral presentation;
a professional paper and/or poster; constructing an
experiment, gathering data and interpreting the results;
or answering a request for proposal. The nature of the
assignment will be commensurate with the overall
learning objectives and department academic plan set
out by the Department Chair.
Phase III: Team Project (TP)
To develop the TPs, participants work in interdisciplinary
and intercultural groups to produce comprehensive
analyses and proposals regarding an international space
project or a topic of relevance in the space sector.
Participants choose one of the TP topics and work on that
topic for the duration of the SSP session. When the TP
work requires specific information, participants can turn
to their departmental experts.
The TP element of the SSP has three main objectives as
described below:
1.To encourage participants to put into practice what
they have brought from their own educational or
professional background, plus the knowledge and
skills they learn from lectures, workshops, theme
days, and other presentations during the SSP
session.
2.To experience decision-making, organizing, and
working in sub-teams, as well as to learn how to
come to solutions and recommendations while
working in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams,
in which conflicting requirements emerge and
compromises must be negotiated.
3.To produce a comprehensive report of professional
quality and deliver the results in a formal public
presentation. The TP report covers all aspects of
the topic including, but not limited to: technical,
financial, organizational, political, social, and
business. Many ISU reports have served as resources
for the world space community.
• A series of factual lectures specific to the TP topics;
• An intensive research and fact-finding period;
• A challenging period of assessing the different ways
to organize the study effort;
• Extensive opportunities for engaging departmental
faculty members and lecturers in discussions
associated with TP issues;
• An interim presentation where expert advice and
comments are provided by reviewers; and
• A period of very intense work to complete the Team
Project Plan, Final Report, Executive Summary, and
the Final Presentation.
Each TP team must analyze and respond to at least the
tasks outlined in the TP descriptions in this Handbook.
Innovative solutions and creativity are encouraged, but
team members must ensure that all of the topics detailed
in the guidelines in the following section have been
addressed.
Deliverables
Just as in any international space project, and to ensure
quality control and accuracy, there will be a set of required
(marked) deliverables. These include a Team Project Plan,
Executive Summary, Final Report, and Final Presentation.
These deliverables, along with the participant’s individual
TP performance mark, comprise the sub-elements of the
TP.
An internal review of the project in the form of a
presentation convenes at the end of Week 7. The internal
review presentation is not marked because the intent
is for the faculty and visiting experts to provide any
final guidance needed before the project approaches
completion.
When developing the Final Report and Executive
Summary, the TP Requirements document, which is a
separate document provided as part of the SSP academic
materials, shall be followed. Failure to do so shall result in
an automatic deduction from the Final Report mark. Each
TP may involve the development of other deliverables
specific to that TP. These additional deliverables are not
marked and are specified in the TP descriptions.
TP Structure
Team Project Plan
The structure of a TP depends to some extent on its
subject matter, but certain aspects are common to all TPs,
including:
• An early phase of exploratory research or
brainstorming discussions about the project;
The Team Project Plan is a useful tool that defines the
direction of the team. It allows the team members to
come together and organize for the execution of the
project. The team will develop a mission statement,
an outline of the project, create a work breakdown
structure that will detail how the work is distributed

among the team members, and complete a detailed
schedule. The Team Project Plan is submitted to the
TP Chair and the SSP Director in accordance with the
deadline indicated in the SSP schedule. The team will
be provided with constructive feedback and comments
on the proposed direction of the project. The Team
Project Plan is limited to 15 pages.
Executive Summary
The Executive Summary is a document that is up to 16
pages in length and is produced both in printed color
copies and in electronic format along with the Final
Report. It provides a succinct high-level summary of all
aspects of the TP with emphasis on the outcomes and
their applicability. It must be submitted to the TP Chair
and SSP Director. The Executive Summary is submitted
to the TP Chair and the SSP Director in accordance with
the deadline indicated in the SSP schedule.
Final Report
The Final Report is the written end product of the
team’s effort. It must adhere to the TP Requirements
document, which is separate from this Handbook. The
Final Report is a professional quality document limited
to 126 pages that clearly and concisely describes the
team’s effort and the outcome of the project. It is
produced only in electronic format, a copy of which is
provided to all participants at the end of the program.
The Final Report is submitted to the TP Chair and the
SSP Director in accordance with the deadline indicated
in the SSP schedule.
Final Presentation
The team will develop and deliver a formal presentation
of the Final Report to the faculty, chairs, fellow SSP
participants, staff, and invited experts. Teams are
encouraged to make full use of available technology
to provide an informative and engaging detailed
presentation of the work they have accomplished. Non-­
traditional, creative presentations are encouraged.

Post-SSP Team Project Activities
ISU alumni regularly present the results of SSP TPs
at international conferences and meetings, such as
the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) and
conferences at the United Nations. Groups of participants
and faculty have also worked to turn TP reports into realworld studies for space agencies and research institutes.
Each year SSP TP Chairs and the Teaching Associates
prepare abstracts that are submitted to the IAC, where
the TP Chairs and TAs are identified as the primary authors
of the papers. This is because the submission dates are
significantly earlier than the start of the SSP session. All
TP team members are identified and acknowledged in the
final submitted published paper.
ISU provides a small budget of 500€ to each TP group
to defray the cost of participant travel to a conference
or symposium for the purpose of delivering a TPrelated presentation. The funds may be provided to one
participant or split among several at the discretion of the
TP Chair.
Topic Selection Criteria
In selecting specific topics and tasks in the TP work
breakdown structure, the team is expected to apply the
following criteria.
• Workable: Generating a complete, integrated
product with clear conclusions in nine weeks
• Realistic: Technically, economically, and politically
feasible
• Innovative: Likely to stimulate new and
unprecedented ideas

Participants must achieve at least an Acceptable (D)
evaluation in each of the three elements to earn a
Certificate of Completion for the SSP, as explained in

themselves with these guidelines. At the beginning of
the Space Studies Program, each participant will be
asked to sign an agreement stating that he/she has fully
understood the terms and conditions contained in the
guidelines.
Core Curriculum Examination
Midterm Quiz
A short quiz will be administered halfway through the
Core Lecture Series. Specifically, the quiz will be scheduled
during the first time slot on the Monday of Week 3. The
quiz will cover all material presented during Weeks 1 and
2 of the Core Lecture Series (it will not include lecture
material presented in Weeks 3 and 4). The questions
on the quiz will include multiple choice, fill‐in‐the‐
blank, or short answer (one sentence). The quiz will be
disciplinary in nature, meaning that questions will assess
understanding of key concepts from each core lecture,
rather than synthesizing information across lectures.
Final Exam
The Final Exam is administered at the end of the Core
Lecture Series on the Friday of Week 4. It will consist of
two parts, (A) disciplinary quiz, and (B) interdisciplinary
essay exam. Both parts will be administered in sequence
and timed during one examination sitting.
The disciplinary quiz (A) will be conducted similar to the
Midterm Quiz, consisting of disciplinary quiz questions in
multiple choice, fill‐in‐the‐blank, or short answer formats.
The quiz will cover material presented during Weeks 3
and 4 of the Core Lecture Series only.
The interdisciplinary essay exam (B) will be administered
directly after the disciplinary quiz. The essay exam will
cover all lecture material in the Core Lecture Series (Weeks
1 to 4 inclusive). It will consist of three (3) interdisciplinary
questions of which two (2) must be answered. It is
the participant’s choice as to which two questions
are addressed. The questions are designed to assess
the participant’s ability to synthesize the information
presented in the core lectures to address a multifaceted
interdisciplinary topic reflecting both technical and non‐
technical content.
The exam will be derived from the material in the core
lectures only. Participants should study the presentation
materials, Core Lecture Study Notes (CLSNs), and notes
taken during the lectures to be fully prepared.
Quiz and Exam Assessment
The Midterm Quiz and Final Exam results together
comprise the core curriculum performance assessment
(i.e., the Core Grade). A detailed assessment briefing will
be presented on the first day of the Core Lecture Series.
The Midterm Quiz will be worth 25% of the Core Grade.
Each question is worth one point and the Midterm Quiz
grade is recorded as a percentage score. If a participant
misses the Midterm Quiz, there will be no opportunity to
take the quiz and a score of zero (0) will be given for the
missed quiz.
The Final Exam will be worth 75% of the Core Grade.

Specifically, the disciplinary quiz will be worth 25 points
(25 questions worth one point each). The interdisciplinary
essay exam section will be worth 50 points: 25 points for
each of the two questions that the participant chooses to
answer.

The Core Grade will be determined by the weighted sum
of the participant’s Midterm Quiz score and the Final
Exam score. A final score of at least 50% is required to
achieve an Acceptable performance level.
A re‐sit exam opportunity will be provided to any
participant who does not achieve an Acceptable
performance level on the Core element. Should a re‐
sit be required, the mark from the re‐sit examination
is limited to a maximum score of 50% (Acceptable). No
re‐sit examination will be arranged in the case where all
participants achieve an Acceptable performance level on
the Core element.
Exam grades will be posted no later than Friday of Week
5. Participants may review their graded exam through a
request to the Academic Coordinator. Grades may not be

TP activities, the TP Chairs and Faculty will take into

define project objectives and ensure their fulfillment;
perform successfully the project parts assigned
to them; gather, utilize, and integrate knowledge
gained in all aspects of the SSP; provide innovative
ideas in order to achieve the objectives of the TP;

Each participant’s contribution and individual overall
mark for the TP will be based on the following five subelements, four of which are the major TP deliverables.

A participant’s individual contribution mark will be
based on a combined evaluation of oral interviews and
general observations. At the discretion of the TP Chair, a
peer review process may be used as an element of the
evaluation.
Transcript, Certificate of Completion,
and Letter of Participation
Upon successful completion of the SSP, participants
receive a transcript of their results and a Certificate of
Completion. Transcripts will reflect all elements of the
SSP performance assessment, and will include an overall
mark for the SSP based on an even weighting of the three
evaluation elements. The SSP Certificate of Completion
will be awarded only to those participants who achieve
a pass (a mark of 50% or above) in each of the three
assessed elements. That is, passing marks of 50% in the
Core, 50% in the Department, and 50% in the TP to obtain
an SSP Certificate of Completion. A Letter of Participation
will be issued to those participants who complete the
program but do not obtain an overall passing mark.
Official copies of the SSP transcript may be obtained
via an online order service on the ISU website at www.
isunet.edu. Transcripts will not be provided to third
parties without the written authorization of the individual
participant. At the end of the program, participants will
be given an unofficial copy of their transcript as a record
of their performance.
Academic Credit
Participants who have successfully completed the SSP are
eligible for a waiver for Module 1 of the ISU Master of
Space Stuides (MSS) program. The condition of eligibility
is as follows: if an SSP participant earns an SSP Certificate
of Completion and scores in the top 50% of the class on
the exam, then he or she is eligible to apply for a waiver
for Module 1 of the Masters program. If a participant is
in the bottom 50% and admitted to Masters program,
then he or she may place a module waiver request with
the President for adjudication. The President’s decision is
final and may not be appealed.
ISU programs are not accredited. However, the French
Ministry of Education has formally recognized ISU as an
institute of higher education in France through the decree
MENS0400386A of 27 February 2004.

Conduct
Academic Guidelines
Attendance
Participants who miss five (5) days or more of the course
will not receive a Certificate of Completion unless
exceptional circumstances apply, and will instead be issued
a Certificate of Participation. If exceptional circumstances
apply, a determination will be made by the SSP Director
in consultation with the Academic Coordinator and the
participant’s Department and TP Chairs.
Participants who leave the program before its completion,
and who have maintained good academic standing, will
be issued a letter from the SSP Director describing the
extent of their participation.
Withdrawal
Any participant who is not undergoing disciplinary
proceedings may petition for early withdrawal from the
program. Petition for withdrawal must be submitted in
writing to the SSP Director.
Upon receipt of the written request, the petition for
withdrawal will be decided upon by the SSP Director,
in consultation with the Academic Coordinator and the
participant’s Department or TP Chair.
If the petition for withdrawal is approved by ISU, the
participant may then request to be readmitted to the
following session of the Space Studies Program.
Participant Responsibilities
The International Space University experience is a
composite of knowledge gained through formal methods
such as lectures, as well as through more informal
channels of discussion and participation in activities
inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, ISU
seeks to develop each participant’s capabilities, network
of associates, and interpersonal skills in small and large
group settings.
Attendance and active participation are expected at all
official SSP academic activities and functions. Any absence
from the SSP session requires the prior approval of the
SSP Director, with the concurrence of the participant’s
Department or TP Chair and the Academic Coordinator.
Extended absences include: absence that prevents a
participant from attending lectures, workshops, theme

days, departmental activities, professional visits, TP
activities, or other official SSP academic activities. Absence
requests may be submitted via the process detailed in the
SSP Absence Policy and Procedure document, which is
located on SSP website.
Academic Warning
Participants
whose
academic
performance
is
unsatisfactory will be subject to one or more of the
following procedures.
Core Examination
When a participant fails the core examination, the
following procedure will be instituted:
1. The participant is notified in writing through a letter
from the Academic Coordinator indicating that he/she
has failed.
2. The Academic Coordinator then consults with the
participant’s Department Chair and the SSP Director.
3. If it is determined by the Department Chair that the
participant failed the examination due to extraneous
circumstances, such as: poor language skills, personal
difficulties, illness, or other extenuating circumstances,
then a re-sit examination will be administered. If
the participant passes the re-sit examination, then
he/she will receive a grade of Pass. Marks on re-sit
examinations will be limited to the maximum possible
score of 50%. The higher result of the two exams will
be taken as the final mark. No re-sit examination will
be arranged in case all participants pass the original
exam. If the participant fails the re-sit examination,
he/she will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory for this
evaluation element of the program.
4. If no extraneous circumstances for the failure are found,
the participant will be informed by the Department
Chair and in writing by the Academic Coordinator that
he/she will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory for this
evaluation element of the program.
Department
If a participant’s academic performance is unsatisfactory
in this program element as assessed by the Department
Chair, then the participant will be placed on academic
probation and will receive a written warning from the SSP
Director detailing the reasons for his/her unsatisfactory
performance. The participant will have one week to
improve his/her performance. If the participant’s
performance does not improve to the satisfaction of the
SSP Director, Academic Coordinator, and the participant’s
Department Chair, the participant will be notified that
he/she will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory for this
evaluation element of the program.
Team Project
If a participant’s academic performance is unsatisfactory
in this program element as assessed by the TP Chair, then
the participant will be placed on academic probation
and will receive a written warning from the SSP Director
containing the reasons for his/her unsatisfactory. The
participant will have one week to improve his/her
performance. If the participant’s performance does not
improve to the satisfaction of the SSP Director and the
TP Chair, the participant will be notified that he/she
will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory for this evaluation
element of the program.
Action in case of Misconduct or Violation of
the Code of Conduct and Ethics
ISU shall establish a centrally appointed Committee
on Academic Conduct and Ethics (CACE) as specified in
the procedures below. For the purposes of confidential
and central record keeping, a one-page summary of the
outcome of all investigations shall be copied to the ISU
Academic Unit to be kept on file. Whenever possible and
appropriate, informal resolution and mediation shall be
used to resolve issues of individual behavior before resort
is made to formal disciplinary procedures.
Committee on Academic Conduct and Ethics
(CACE)
During a session of the SSP, the SSP Committee on
Academic Conduct and Ethics addresses all issues
regarding the disciplinary aspects of the academic life,
academic freedom, academic duties, and responsibilities,
as well as breaches to the ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics.
In all matters brought before the SSP CACE, all parties will
be given fair and equal opportunity to present their views
to the Committee.
Membership
During a session of the SSP, the SSP CACE is composed of:
• For SSP, three Chairs elected from the Chairs
present on site by the Chairs and the members of the
faculty of ISU present on site; and
• The SSP Director.
This Committee elects its Chair from among the Chair
members of the Committee.
Procedures
The SSP CACE will consider all allegations of ISU Code
of Conduct and Ethics violations brought forth by a
participant, staff member, or a member of the faculty.
All such complaints must be made in writing. The SSP
CACE, will provide a copy of the written complaint to the
individual against whom the complaint has been made as
soon as feasible. The individual against whom a complaint
is lodged shall have the right to file a written response to
the allegations or appear in person before the committee.
The complainant must be willing to appear before the SSP
CACE, should the Committee consider such an appearance
necessary to determine the truth or substance of the
allegations in the complaint.
The Committee shall investigate the complaints and
determine if the allegations are valid and if they violate
the ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics. If it is determined
that a violation of the ISU Code of Conducts and Ethics has
taken place, the SSP CACE will take one of the following
disciplinary measures for violation of the Code of Conduct
and Ethics: warning, probation, or dismissal.
The following measures or combinations of them may be
imposed upon individuals found to have committed an
offense under the ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics.
Warning and Probation
A written warning or notice of probation explicitly states
that further disciplinary action will ensue if the individual
fails to achieve a satisfactory level of behavior within
the proscribed probation period. During the time of this
warning or probation period the individual’s behavior shall
be closely monitored in an effort to effect improvement
or change. If new significant problems of behavior arise
during the probationary period, immediate dismissal may
occur.
Dismissal for Cause
Suspension from registration in an ISU program for a
specified period or recommendation for expulsion from
ISU. A letter of suspension or termination will be issued
to be effective on the date of the decision.
If a participant, member of the Faculty of ISU, Lecturer
on site, or staff member has committed an offense under
the ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics, does not achieve the
required behavior standards by the review date provided
in a written warning, or if this individual is found to have
engaged in willful misconduct, disobedience, or willful
neglect of duty, a sanction of suspension or expulsion can
be imposed.
In the case of a participant, this sanction would directly
affect a participant’s registration in a program and may
be imposed only where it has been determined that

the offense committed is of such a serious nature that
the participant’s continued registration threatens the
academic function of the ISU program or the ability of
other participants to continue their program(s) of study.
In all cases of disciplinary action recommended by the SSP
CACE, the individual involved has the right of an appeal to
the ISU President.
Interim Conditions and Measures
Ongoing personal Safety
In cases where the allegations of behavior are serious and
constitute a significant personal safety threat to members
of the ISU community, the SSP Director is authorized
to impose interim conditions that balance the need of
complainants for safety with the requirement of fairness
to the respondent. The interim conditions are in no way
to be construed as indicative of guilt, and shall remain
in place until the charges are disposed of under the SSP
CACE’s procedures.
Urgent Situations
In some circumstances, such as those involving serious
threats or violent behavior, it may be necessary to remove
the individual from ISU. The SSP Director may suspend
the individual temporarily for up to three working days
if there is reasonable apprehension that the safety of
others is endangered, damage to property is likely to
occur, or the continued presence of the individual would
be disruptive to the legitimate operations of the ISU
program. The individual(s) shall be informed immediately
in writing of the reasons for the suspension and shall be
afforded the opportunity to respond. The SSP CACE must
review the temporary suspension period, following a
preliminary investigation, and either revoke or continue
the suspension. The individual has the right of appeal to
the President.
Appeal Procedure
All members of the ISU community have the right of
appeal against a decision regarding them. Appeals shall
be submitted in writing to the President of ISU with the
appropriate justifications. The President will evaluate
the position of the complainant and the Chair of the
CACE. The President may request additional information
and consult with others at his or her discretion. The
President’s decision is final.
ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics (COCE)
ISU’s Code of Conduct and Ethics (COCE) commits everyone
in the ISU community to the highest ethical standards in
furtherance of ISU’s mission of teaching, research, and
service. The foundations of ethical behavior at ISU are

a commitment to respecting the rights and dignity of all
persons and a commitment to discharging our obligations
to others in a fair and honest manner. Every member of
ISU plays an important role in keeping these commitments
by demonstrating integrity and respect in his or her daily
activities and in the performance of their responsibilities.
This Code of Conduct and Ethics establishes a statement
of principles to guide the activities of all ISU faculty, staff,
and participants.
Code of Honorable Conduct
All ISU participants, staff, and faculty shall conduct
themselves in a manner that is honorable and respectful
of other people and of ISU. They shall abstain from any
public action, statement, or publication that would be
incompatible with their duties or obligations as an ISU
staff member and/or faculty members. This shall pertain
to activities within classes, during examinations, while
participating in ISU-sponsored events, and within the
host communities.
Policy on Harassment and Discriminatory
Behavior
Discrimination against, or harassment of, an individual
on the basis of his/her race, origin, nationality, gender,
sexual orientation, religion, physical challenge, or any
other ground is prohibited and shall not be tolerated.
Academic Honesty
All members of the ISU community shall conduct
themselves in accordance with accepted principles of
academic honesty as described in this Program Handbook.
Cheating, plagiarism, copyright violations, or other forms
of dishonesty are prohibited and shall not be tolerated.
Violation of the ISU academic honesty policy will result in
penalties commensurate with the offense.
Offenses
ISU considers the following behavior, or attempts thereof,
by any participant, staff, or faculty member, whether
acting alone or with any other persons, to violate the ISU
Code of Conduct and Ethics, including, but not limited to:
(a) Physical harm or threat of physical harm to any person
or persons, including, but not limited to assault, sexual
abuse, or other forms of physical abuse.
(b) Harassment, whether physical or verbal, oral or
written, which is beyond the bounds of protected free
speech, directed at a specific individual(s) and likely to
cause an immediate breach of the peace.
(c) Conduct which threatens the mental health, physical
health, or safety of any person or persons including, but
not limited to drug or alcohol abuse, and other forms of
destructive behavior.
(d) Academic dishonesty, including, but not limited to
plagiarism and cheating, and other forms of academic
misconduct, for example, misuse of academic resources
or facilities, or misuse of computer software, data,
equipment, or networks.
(e) Intentional disruption or obstruction of any activity
organized by ISU or by an institution hosting an ISU
program or activity, such as the SSP, or the right of its
members to carry on their legitimate activities, to speak
or to associate with others (including their exercise of the
right to assemble and to peaceful protest).
(f) Theft of or damage to personal or ISU property, effects,
information, intellectual property, or services, or illegal
possession or use of the same.
(g) Forgery, alteration, fabrication, or misuse of
identification cards, records, grades, documents, or
misrepresentation of any kind to an ISU office or member.
(h) Unauthorized entry, use, or occupation of ISU facilities
or SSP host facilities that are locked, closed, or otherwise
restricted as to use.
(i) Disorderly conduct including, but not limited to public
intoxication, lewd, indecent or obscene behavior, libel,
slander, and illegal gambling.
(j) Unauthorized possession or use of any weapon
including firearms, BB-guns, air rifles, explosive devices,
fireworks, or any other dangerous, illegal, or hazardous
object or material, and improper use as a weapon of any
otherwise permitted object or material.
(k) Counselling, procuring, conspiring, or aiding a
person with commission of an offense, or knowingly or
maliciously bringing a false charge against any member of
ISU under this code.
(l) Refusal to comply with a sanction or sanctions imposed

Duty to Assist in Implementing the ISU Code
of Conduct and Ethics
Participants, staff, and faculty who witness violations
of the ISU Code of Conduct and Ethics are encouraged
to approach the offender in a manner that can lead to
informal mitigation of the offense. Every attempt should
be made to resolve the situation in a manner that assists
the offender to correct his/her behavior while maintaining
the integrity of ISU and other individuals who may be
involved. In instances where the offense is considered
to merit additional action, the matter is to be referred to
the appropriate person: Where a participant is involved
in such offense, the appropriate person is the Director of
the relevant ISU Program; where it is a member of the
ISU Faculty, it is the Dean; in other cases, it is the ISU

Access to space can provide practical and valuable
benefits to all humankind. The Space Applications
Department examines the various applications on Earth
that are offered by space technologies with a primary
focus on Earth-orbiting satellite systems, ground systems,
and end-user equipment hardware and software. Key
areas of focus include:

payload development, image processing (optical, radar),
global positioning systems (GPS), and data analysis.
Professional visits to local facilities provide further insight
into social and commercial space applications.

precision agriculture, forestry, industry, and disaster management and recovery. Carolyn McCormick
Woolpert Inc. is one of the first firms to receive FAA approval for flying unmanned
aerial systems commercially in designated airspace.

Afternoon activity about aerial imaging and navigation positioning of data for
processed digital imagery. Visit Midwest Aerial Photography’s private airport facility
and view remote sensing technologies, including imaging aircraft with the latest Ken Scruggs
digital cameras and coupled GPS/IMU devices, and an aircraft with a Leica ALS 60 Su-Yin Tan
LiDAR sensor installed. Overview of the complete “remote sensing workflow” from Carolyn McCormick
data acquisition, processing, and analysis to product delivery. Presentation about
military radar systems and communication equipment installed at the airport facility
for precise missile tracking.

The Gordon K. Bush Ohio University Airport and Academic Center is a Universityowned and managed airport to support aviation flight training. Tour the training
facilities, flight simulators, maintenance services, and training fleet, including Bryan Branham
Cessna, Beechcraft, and Piper aircraft. Learn about technologies used in the cockpit, Mike DiBenedetto
including navigation and communication tools, moving maps, and new iPad software
for instrument monitoring and flight planning. Optional activity to participate in an
actual training flight to view cockpit technologies in action (weather dependent).

DA10/11: National Radio Astronomy Observatory (Overnight trip)
Joint activity with the Space Sciences (SCI) Department. Overnight trip with departure
on Thursday, July 16 and return the following afternoon. Visit Seneca Rocks on the
way to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at Green Bank, West
Virginia. Learn about radio astronomy and view antenna and receiver equipment
used for detecting cosmic radio waves, including the world’s largest fully-steerable
radio telescope.

Space Engineering Department (ENG)
The Space Engineering (SE) Department allows participants
to gain hands-on experience in all stages of the systems
engineering process of space systems at multiple levels,
from the simplest to the most complex. Building on the
knowledge gained during the core lectures related to
space engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding
each level of system design, integration, and testing as
complexity increases from components to subsystems, to
spacecraft, to the space mission, and eventually to entire
space programs.
Throughout the department, participants will also have
the opportunity to undertake a major project that has
become a trademark of ISU: the design, construction,
testing, and launch of a model rocket to meet a set of flight
requirements, including the safe retrieval of its payload.
This project will allow the participants an opportunity to
implement all aspects of the system engineering process
in the conception, design, integration, and operation of a
simulated spacecraft.
At the end of the department time, the participants
should be able to:
• Approach and analyze a problem with an engineering
mindset.
• Design, simulate, manufacture, integrate, test, and
launch a model rocket - skills that can be extended to
any other complex system.
• Complete a preliminary design of a particular
subsystem of a spacecraft, and predict how different
design parameters affect other subsystems.
• Present and defend a research project in front of a
technical audience.

Participants are introduced to the roster of activities and guidelines of the department.
The first rocket workshop is dedicated to the design of the model rockets. Computer Joe Pellegrino
simulations (RockSim) are used to choose geometric properties, mass properties and John Connolly
engines to meet altitude, flight time, payload and mass constraints. Participant teams Dennis Irwin

DA5: ROBOTIC PLANETARY EXPLORATION ANALOGUE MISSION: MISSION DEFINITION AND
PLANNING
This activity will leverage the knowledge gained in previous workshops. A short
overview lecture will be provided outlining the process that government agencies
and private companies undertake when developing mission architectures. This will
be followed by an explanation of the specific objectives and rules for the mission
simulation. Once the groundwork has been laid, we will develop a detailed plan to
maximize the scientific returns of the real analogue mission (DA7).

Innovations directly spawning from space research often result in Earth-based
applications. Examples include scratch-resistant lenses, memory foam, and some

Participants will control prototype rovers in the Canadian Space Agency Mars Yard via
remote tele-operation from the Rover Control Center (RCC). They will work as a real
operations support team in order to execute the mission plan defined in DA5. They
will direct a planetary exploration rover to various scientifically appropriate areas of
interest within the Mars Yard to acquire scientifically significant data.

Human Performance in Space Department (HPS)
The Human Performance in Space Department addresses
the biological, physiological, psychological, and medical
changes that are unique to human spaceflight and
planetary exploration, as well as the challenges these
changes present to mission success.
Participants will focus on challenges related to crew
support during short- and long duration space missions
including:
• Countermeasures to prevent de-conditioning of organ
systems, including artificial gravity
• Constraints of space operational medicine
• Issues for psychological adaptation to confinement
and isolation
• Life support systems

DA8: REGULATION OF HOMEOSTASIS IN RELATION TO SPACE OPERATIONAL MEDICINE
This activity will familiarize participants with the regulation of blood pressure on
Earth and how physiologic changes on orbit influence blood pressure. Participants
will participate in a hands-on laboratory experience of manually monitoring changes
in blood pressure. Additionally, abattoir mammalian (porcine or bovine) hearts will
be used to examine cardiac anatomy. Alterations to cardiac physiology on orbit will
be discussed.

Space Humanities Department (HUM)
The Space Humanities Department focuses on the
interplay between human culture and our space
endeavors. Through a series of in-depth, hands-on
and multi-part activities, participants will explore this
interplay themselves. Participants will create their own
space-focused movies to be screened at the Athena
Cinema; carry out a social media campaign for a Mars
analogue mission; develop space events to help foster the
global space community; and create their own space art
using 3D-printing. Participants will learn from leaders in
the space community through these hands on activities.
The activities are specifically designed to take participants
on a journey of inspiration, creation, and reflection.
Participants will work outside their familiar realm of
experience to explore the basic motivations for space
exploration. Through interactive discussions and
workshops, they will gain an understanding of the uses of
traditional and nontraditional multi-media techniques to
inspire the next generation of space doers and dreamers.
Participants will:
• Participate in an outdoor adventure at a local cave to
simulate various aspects of a space mission.

To prepare participants for their final movie project, effective concept-development,

DA9: The Next XPRIZE
How has space become a major player in the evolution of incentive-based prizes
and how have these prizes captivated the world? What is it about space that
grabs the attention of the global community? In this DA, we will learn more about
the inspiration behind incentive-based prizes and how XPRIZE has captivated
imaginations around the world. We will discuss the Google Lunar XPRIZE and the
Ansari XPRIZE in particular as case studies to demonstrate the rational. We will
then participate in an “XPRIZE Visioneering” for future space prizes.

Participants will present on the themes and concepts developed for their movie
projects. They will have the opportinuty to show the ‘behind the scenes’ of

Space Management and Business Department (MGB)
Space industry, driven by commercial initiatives, is
undergoing a renaissance, showing innovation that is now
impacting other industrial sectors such as agriculture,
marine transportation, energy, and logistics. Commercial
Off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies and innovations in
modular launch combined with 3D printing and nanomaterials have caught the imagination of entrepreneurs
and venture capitalists alike. It is expected that future
space concepts are going to be more promising and
ambitious, and will likely incorporate advances in robotics,
optics, propulsion, and communication, enabling entirely
new types of economic activities on ground and in-orbit.
Succeeding in this future environment would require space
industry professionals to not only be proficient in space
technologies, but to understand and articulate a vision
that will attract resources for their organization’s growth.
SSP’15 participants will be introduced to finance and deal
structure negotiations process and methodologies by
experienced deal-makers (both venture capitalists and
entrepreneurs). They will further interact with captains
of space industry who are helping redefine the policy on
commercial space initiatives. Finally, the participants will
get a chance to interact with seasoned executives who
have a history of building successful businesses in space,
and discuss with them the best practices in leadership,
resource and stakeholder management, and what
inspired them to start their own business.

All Commercial ventures in space are subject to regulatory overtures and oversight.
Often, new ventures are part of the regulatory feedback and policy-shaping process
long before a policy is formulated. Understanding how regulatory policy works and
how it can impact a venture’s success is critical for an entrepreneur / innovator.
Presenters with a strong background in policy and innovation will connect the dots
on how the interplay of innovations in space and policy will continue to impact the
entrepreneurial journey and redefine the space industry.
DA5: Business Model Innovation I: Commercializing Space
The session will provide an overview of initiatives using modern robotics and space
technologies for creating a commercial service for in-orbit applications. These cases
will also consider how capital, policy, technology and innovations are propelling
space industry’s growth.
DA6: Hidden Biases in Decision-making
Decision-making in business requires making a rational assessment of one’s own and
counter-party’s goals and objectives, and a 360-degree view of the best alternative
to a negotiated agreement. With data-mining techniques, it is becoming increasingly
possible to determine biases, and apply game theory models to devise negotiation
strategies.
DA 7: Disruptive Technologies: Social History and Execution
Disruptive technologies generally gain abnormally high market share by lowering
cost and/or creating new markets. In this session the panelists will discuss how
disruptive technologies originally came to be, including the processes and factors
that enabled these innovations to become both value accretive and iconic.
DA8: Starting your own business (JOINT ACTIVITY WITH pel department)
This joint activity will take the form of a Hypothetical involving a panel of players
acting out a fictional case study about the legal, financial and organizational
issues encountered by inexperienced but enthusiastic entrepreneurs who are
commercializing space-related technologies. We will cover a wide range of legal and
strategic issues including company structuring, shareholder agreements, forming
a company board, protecting and licensing intellectual property, finding investors,
rewarding employees, customer contracts, and exit strategies.
DA9: Business Model Innovations II: Monetizing Space
Earth observation and remote sensing are currently undergoing a renaissance, with
low cost, low mass satellite constellations being funded for data and information
products. Industries likely to be affected include agri, energy, forestry, shipping/
logistics, and environment management. Panelists in this session will share the highs
and lows of bringing their systems to market, and their experience in building their
ventures.
DA10: Risk Underwriting In Space
Space insurance is a $800 million annual business, with multiple brokers, underwriters,
and risk management firms working together to provide coverage for space systems
– both to traditional space players and the emerging entrepreneurial firms. The

Students joining the Policy, Economics, and Law
department will be involved in a range of discussions,
debates and interactions designed to provide a more in
depth understanding of what shapes current and future
space activities in various parts of the world; the societal
impacts, justifications, and benefits; and the international
and national legal frameworks within which space
activities are conducted.
A range of international policy economic and legal experts
will work with students on topics that include:

Space Sciences Department (SCI)
Space Sciences introduces the principles, concepts, tools,
and techniques necessary to investigate and understand
the space environment. Department activities provide
hands-on opportunities to learn about physics from
experts in the field. Participants will work with telescopes
(on site and remotely) to learn the fundamentals of
astronomy and astrophotography. They will learn how to
remotely operate a rover to conduct scientific missions.
They will learn about the microgravity environment
through drop tower experiments. Participants will visit
the large radio telescopes at Green Bank, West Virginia.
Through these activities they will build an overall
understanding of the physical sciences with support
of department leaders and lecturers. Participants will
prepare and present on a subject of particular interest,
agreed upon with the departmental Chair. Entering the
exciting world of space physical sciences does not require
a degree in science or engineering; participants from all
backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
At the end of the department time, the participants
should be able to:

of an active remote sensor, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). SAR is a multipurpose
sensor that can be operated in all-weather and day-night time, especially for tropical Su-Yin Tan

manoeuvres, two asteroid flybys, and 2 ½ years in hibernation.
Since then, the main science mission of Rosetta has taken place in the close vicinity of
the comet nucleus, and, at time of writing, we are expecting the wake-up of the Philae
lander any time before the comet’s perihelion on August 13th, 2015.
The Rosetta spacecraft was built under the prime contractorship of Airbus Defence and Vincent Guillaud
Space Germany (Friedrichshafen). Airbus Defence and Space UK (Stevenage) developed
the mechanical platform including propulsion and solar array, whereas Airbus Defence
and Space France (Toulouse) delivered the spacecraft’s avionics including data handling,
attitude and orbit control, and, of course, the central software.
Vincent Guillaud, head of System Engineering for Earth Observation, Navigation and
Science satellites at Airbus Defence and Space, has worked on the Rosetta mission
since the mid-1980s, and will deliver the workshop including a complete presentation
of the mission and spacecraft, and a number of “hands-on” activities to better figure
out the interplanetary journey and cometary environment.
The Continuing Supervision of Commercial Space Activities

Commercial space activities are enjoying an increasingly high profile. This timely workshop will explore what is meant by the term “commercial space” and the interaction
between the private and public sectors. After an interactive lecture introducing the
basics of various modes of governance from licensing to certification, participants will Diane Howard
break out into teams, choose a hypothetical scenario detailing a proposed commercial
space activity (provided by the instructor), and compile a generic application for authorization​to perform that activity. Hypotheticals will include launches and re-entries,
operations, spaceports, and on-orbit activities. ​The participants will ultimately decide
whether to grant or decline authorization for the activities of their peers.
Social Media for the Space Business

Social media is a rapidly growing channel for marketing communication, space outreach
and education. This workshop looks at these areas of social media from the space
business point of view. The modern space marketeer has many new tools to reach
out to all kinds of audiences: customers, suppliers, competitors, staff, educators and Remco
the general public. We look at this new digital toolkit to see what tools can be used Timmermans
for what messages for what audiences. We learn how to define a good social media
strategy and how to implement this. What works and what does not work? How to fit
digital media channels into the corporate communication strategy and the mission and
vision. We also look at measuring results from digital media. What tools can we use
and how do we measure results?
Computer Vision for Space Robotics: How to Make Your Terminator See!

The purpose of this session is to familiarize participants with computer vision and the
challenges associated with its application in space. Similar to human eyes and brain,
computer vision systems provide the ability to extract information from surrounding Bruno Sylvestre
environment. Computer vision is more than just 2D or 3D images; it uses sensors along
with artificial intelligence to obtain higher level information from the surrounding
environment - for instance relative positioning or hazard detection. In the past and

today, computer vision systems have been used in a wide range of space applications
such as ISS assembly, Space Shuttle inspection, or the Mars Exploration Rovers. Typically
these systems have been used to acquire data for human operators – either astronauts
or ground controllers – with low level of autonomy required by the space system. New
exploration initiatives and future space applications will require more autonomy from
robotic systems and thus rely on vision systems to make intelligent decisions.
Getting Around on Another World: An Introduction to Rover Systems Design

The purpose of this activity is to teach participants the importance of rover design in
the success of surface exploration missions. A lecture will introduce participants to
the relationship between mission concepts and rover performance requirements. An
overview of rover subsystems critical to meeting these requirements will be provided,
including a summary of the state-of-the-art in power, communication, control, navigation Ewan Reid
and localization, environmental protection, and locomotion system designs. Examples
of existing flight and terrestrial analog rovers will be used to illustrate the relationship
between rover functionality and design. A discussion on the future requirements for
planetary surface exploration will be provided, with a special emphasis on pre-cursor
in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) missions. Finally, design methodologies and analysis
tools useful for developing conceptual rover designs will be introduced.
New Business Models - How New Space is Organized

We increasingly hear about the “new space” sector. Most often this word is used to
describe any space company independent or less dependent of public funding. But when
looking at the organization structures of these companies there is another distinguishing
factor: Most of these organizations do not follow the traditional hierarchical or matrix
structures. As we see in industries such as IT or consulting firms, new space is organized Remco
in a much less formal way. They use organization models that grow organically, consist Timmermans

networks of small and medium sized companies. This workshop or lecture looks at these
new and dynamic business models in the context of business evolution: How do leading

Microgravity Drop Tower Experiment

In this workshop, the concepts of microgravity and free fall are described and then
session participants will test their knowledge and investigative skills with various
microgravity demonstration devices. Then the participants will work as a team to Nancy Rabel Hall
design and build an experiment that will be conducted in NASA Glenn’s 2.2 Second Drop
Tower. Video results of the experiments conducted will be shared with the participants
during their visit to NASA Glenn.

about key players and will simulate an imaginary yet totally plausible conflict in space.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

developments in optical, hyperspectral, and high resolution remote sensing imagery Su-Yin Tan
for coastal zone and natural resource management. Participants will gain hands-on
training with ArcGIS and ENVI image processing software for image enhancement and
classification.
Leadership, communication and cooperation in space work

Good communication, cooperation and leadership are key in a space project, like
your TP. This workshop proposes a simulation (game, free game like Artemis) where
decisions need to be made in a short time frame and create an environment where Andrée-Anne
leadership, communication and cooperation must to be perfect to succeed. At the end Parent
of the simulation we will debrief on what happened, present leadership styles, talk
about some tips to avoid some sticky situations, and try to find solutions before some
situations happen. The tips during this workshop can be useful in your TP or job.
Perceptions of Military Space

Since humans first reached into space, access had been limited and controlled by only
the most powerful governments in the world-largely for military advantage. In this
workshop, participants will explore public perceptions of current and future military
endeavors in space in light of increased commercial uses of military-derived data. The Stacey
participants will discuss national security of space and the public views of different Solomone
nations, rightly or wrongly, toward military activities in the space domain. While
visiting a site important to Ohio’s military history, we will examine ways new military
and commercial uses of the space domain can overlap and potentially affect space
security.

Understanding Alien Worlds

Exoplanet research is progressing at an accelerating rate with around 1,800 exoplanets
having been discovered, almost 800 of those being detected in 2014 alone. The
characterization of, and the determination of the properties of, exoplanets is also
maturing as a field with the detection of molecules in exoplanets atmospheres. More
and more Earth sized exoplanets in the habitable zones of their star systems are being
discovered and no-one can argue against this being an incredibly exciting time for
exoplanet research. So much so that there was a TP Exoplanets at SSP14, which I was
the TA of. I will give an introduction to exoplanets research.
In the workshop, detection methods and explanations of the properties of exoplanets
will be given. The science behind exoplanets, linking the detection method with the
property that was determined. The participants will be taken through the Planet
Hunters website (http://www.planethunters.org/) and taught how to use the website
to actively contribute to exoplanet research and detect exoplanets using real data. Thomas Wilson
Participants will also be shown the exoplanet database (http://exoplanet.eu/catalog/)
and be showen to play around with the data using the websites graphing tool.
Participants will be asked to compare the relationships of the properties and figure out
why they are like that, providing assistance and giving examples (such as period v semimajor axis, host star properties v exoplanet properties, anything v semi-major axis,
anything v year discovered, star metallicity). For example, using data on the host star’s
class, one could determine the habitable zone, using data on the exoplanet’s density,
one could determine if an exoplanet is rocky or a gas giant, and using data on the
exoplanet’s atmosphere, and the other properties mentioned, one could determine
if the exoplanet could host life. Participants will be introduced the Exoplanet Transit
Database (http://var2.astro.cz/ETD/protocol.php) and another way of detecting
exoplanets using real data. The participants will then present any scientific discoveries
they have made to the rest of the workshop.

The Search for Life in the Universe

Participants will learn the differences between types of cells in known life on Earth.
Types of cells and the strength and weaknesses of these life forms will be discussed. In
addition, life in extreme environments on Earth will be evaluated. A discussion of SETI
evaluations to search for life in the universe will be performed. Participants will work
with light microscopes and compare their own cheek cells (collected via cotton swabs) Heather Allaway
with plant cells, and various single celled organisms. Participants will draw the cells in
accordance with biological drawing protocols, work in groups to note the differences
between the cell types, decide why the cells have differences, and which features
would be important for life off Earth. The participants will design a mission to find this
life based on the important cell structures they identified. The participants will discuss
the societal and political impact of finding life on other planetary bodies.

Space debris is any man-made non-operational object in orbit, including old satellites, rocket bodies, mission related debris, fragments from the over 250 observed
satellite and upper stage breakups and collision products. As space activities increase,
reducing the impact of this hazard is becoming a major challenge for spacecraft and
space mission designers. Low-Earth orbit requires attention in the near term as well
as geosynchronous orbit and there is an urgency for action. The panel members will
address the most current issues concerning mitigation of the debris problem and
specifically focus on the important issues such as methods to protect a spacecraft
against space debris, measures to control the growth of debris, active techniques
to reduce the number of space debris (removal of debris with laser, tether, air-drag
devices, garbage collectors). Topics addressed will also include the legal aspects such
as the role of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee, the ongoing
process in the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS, the space debris
position paper of IAA, the role of ITU and other national activities.

NASA Asteroid Retreival Mission Design and Technologies
This Theme Day is sponsored by NASA’s Glenn Research Center and will feature
discussion about NASA’s planned Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) and the
technologies currently in work to support this mission. Speakers will include a
member of NASA’s ARM design team, NASA-GRC Spaceflight Systems Director Bryan
Smith discussing Solar Electric Propulsion technology that is key to the ARM mission,
and NASA experts discussing technologies for capturing asteroids and returning them
to to a safe orbit around Earth’s moon. Participants will engage in a discussions of
alternative mission designs and alternative technology choices that could be applied
to this complex mission.

Mars Exploration Workshop

This workshop is a simulation of the process the international community has used
to develop existing Mars exploration plans, as well as the on-going effort to bring
science, engineering, and program management together to forge a program that
is responsive to discoveries and resilient to setbacks and programmatic changes.
Students will be divided into multi-disciplinary teams to conduct a role-play
exercise. Their task is to define a mission concept for a future robotic Mars mission
- taking into account scientific priorities, projected technology capabilities, cost, and
programmatic guidelines. The mission would be part of an architecture for proposed
Mars exploration in the 2020s.

Space Operations Analogs
Space operations analogs such as the MDRS, HiSEAS, MOONWALK, ESA CAVES, NASA
NEEMO, ROSCOSMOS/ESA Mars-500 and other similar programs allow for crew training
in flight-like environments and cost-effective research into crew dynamics, operational
procedures, crew diet, equipment testing, ergonomics research, crew psychology,
mitigation measures and more! Many ISU Alumni have participated in, and conducted
these studies, including an all-ISU Alumni crew at the MDRS in January of 2015, and crew
in the longest space flight simulation in history, Mars-500. ISU is also heavily involved in
analogs as we are currently participating in a European Commission project to build a
portable space analog called “SHEE”.

Team Project - Planetary Defense
Introduction
Objectives
Defending our home planet against hazardous asteroids
and comets is a very high priority issue because a high
energy impact by larger objects has the potential to
literally wipe out large population centers, decimate flora
and fauna, upset our fragile climate and cause incalculable
damage to critical physical infrastructure. Such an event
will be extremely difficult if not impossible to recover
from. Thus it is imperative that we prepare to defend our
home planet, especially since new technologies allow us
to do so. Space systems and allied technologies must play
a key role in planetary defense; however, the advanced
systems and technologies to be employed will also
require unprecedented cooperation and coordination
among nations that can only be achieved using state of
the art information and communication networks that
are maturing right now. Appropriately, NASA, the Russian
Space Agency, and ESA have all begun asteroid mitigation
projects looking at all aspects of planetary defense.
It is vital that plans to thwart or ameliorate the effects
of such a cataclysmic event, should it occur, be widely
disseminated to the global community so humanity can
better prepare to recover from a range of effects following
such an event. Global involvement, innovative and agile
organizations, and creative structures in policy making
and governance are a prerequisite for agile action that is
necessary for effective response.
Most planetary defense strategies in the literature look
at long term options to mitigate the asteroid impact
threat. What if the threat appears with short term
notice, requiring agile response? This TP will look at all
the advanced technologies associated with Planetary
Defense, especially the current and projected capabilities
of core space technologies and allied systems that are
needed to develop a range of strategies, concepts, options
and protocols based on current developments and near
term projections as well as organizations around the
world to shape the global policy and explore alternatives
to neutralize an asteroid threat in the near term, e.g., a
bolide on a Earth impact terminal approach trajectory
with a maximum warning time of one or two years.
Background
Asteroid and cometary impacts on planetary bodies
are a natural, ongoing residual process that remind us
of solar system genesis and evolution. Though these
events occur in a random manner over geologic time,
periodic species extinction events on Earth have been
attributed to some cataclysmic asteroid impacts. Recent
observations show that such impacts happen more
frequently than previously estimated in the literature.
Today, however, systems are maturing that are capable
enough to thwart potentially hazardous objects (PHOs)
from impacting the Earth. Space technologies that can be
used for planetary defense are fast approaching maturity.
A range of advanced engineering systems including
those required for surveillance, detection, tracking and
interception, as well as a host of systems for diffusing
the threat - including techniques for ablation, deflection
and threat neutralization are available today. Established
spacefaring countries are currently working on plans to
engage the world community of nations in dealing with
this threat that has already caused recent havoc in the
city of Chelyabinsk in Russia.

• Review and document current literature and
plans(including past ISU reports) as well as the state
of planetary defense initiatives across space agencies
worldwide.
• Situational Awareness ‐ Explore and document new
and innovative technologies that can be employed to
observe, detect and neutralize threats identified and
requiring response in the short term(1‐2 years).
• Document space systems and armaments that can be
used for mitigating such a threat.
• Show how advances in sensors, information
technology, information networks, data processing,
and sharing and agile archiving and retrieval will allow
rapid evaluation of threat and response options.
• Create a set of credible plans to mitigate threat.
• Visually depict a variety of threat mitigation
concept architectures and their various systems and
operational modes.
• Failure Modes and Effects Analysis ‐Contingency plans
and Fallback Options – Show failure tree. Depict a
range of consequences for Earth and humanity in the
event of inaction or system failure.
• Show other applications and uses for this planetary
defense architecture, once such a global infrastructure
is built and commissioned.
• Depict alternative critical paths and timeline (stages)
for recovery after impact.
• Present plans for implementing a system(s) to engage
global community in education and outreach.
• Show how NGOs, small business and commerce
would contribute to this endeavor.
• Fully leverage ISU charter and character to make this
project a positive educational experience in learning
how teamwork and problem solving are achieved in
an international, multicultural and multidisciplinary
environment with time and resource constraints, and
show how planetary defense can be a vital tool not
only to protect Earth, but also to engage the nations
of the world, both spacefaring and those aspiring, to
be part of a vital and peaceful global endeavor.
• Produce an illustrated report that details all the
creative activity.
• Present and publish proceedings at relevant
conferences.
Conclusion
Since asteroid or comet impact poses a global threat, like
climate change, Planetary Defense aspires to all humanity.
Technologies are maturing that can be commissioned to
mitigate this threat. It is imperative that we find ways
to integrate all peoples and nation states in this global
endeavor. ISU is an ideal platform to promote a range of
issues, both technology and policy driven, because ISU
offers a range of scientific, engineering, law and policy as
well as art and the humanities lectures at the core of this
TP. Nations and their space agencies are currently joining
forces to examine the problem. The United Nations Office
of Outer Space Affairs(UN OOSA) has convened several
meetings in the past few years to understand the nature
of this threat and coordinate response alternatives on a
global scale. The broad scope of this TP offers a major
exposure to all the disciplines. It is important to act on it
in a timely manner so ISU might be an active partner to
lead the charge in this global endeavor.

Team Project - Vision 2040
Introduction
The landscape of space exploration and development is
rapidly changing. Disruptive technology and emerging
commercial industries are enabling the development of
new capabilities and markets in space. Entrepreneurs are
finding support for business plans that would have been
laughed at just a few years ago, and government support
for routine delivery of cargo and crew to LEO is on the
rise.
This Team Project will study the trends in major areas
driving space exploration and development in order to
construct multiple ‘Visions’ of what the year 2040 could
look like. Based on their serious look into the future
the team will recommend strategic actions that ISU and
other universities should implement to better prepare
their students for the future world landscape. Given the
experience and knowledge gained during this project,
team members should also be poised to suggest or
incorporate the best and most relevant ideas into future
planning at their home institutions or elsewhere during
their careers.
Background
In the late 1980s, when the first SSPs took place and when
the initial ideas for what the ISU could be in the future
were conceived, the 3”I”s concept was as visionary as it
was alien to the ways in which the contemporary global
space studies and industry were functioning. Following
the Cold War and before the Internet, financial and other
forms of globalization, the idea to build an institution
on the promise of the new frontier of space by creating
international, interdisciplinary and intercultural programs,
and by supporting the interaction between young,
emerging experts from around the world, made the ISU
successful by providing an extraordinary experience for
generations of SSP and MSc program attendees.
In 2015, however, the world, global space industry and
science alike, are all living the 3”I” concept. Knowledge
acquisition and sharing is primarily digital, international
collaboration and exchange options are abundant, and
all the leading national institutes, research centers and
universities that once were at the core of the respectful
national space programs are now competing in the
joint, global market for higher education. The world has
therefore changed but has yet to live up to the hopes of
the ISU founders, because it has not achieved the key
goals of interplanetary travel, Solar System exploration,
and resource exploitation. The ISU has reached a new,
mature era of functioning, and it is time to capitalize on

its accumulated global outreach and experience, and
envision a new role for its programs that is fit for the
modern trends in higher education. In fact, to stay true
to its visionary foundations, ISU should now envision the
type of education and training that will be relevant in
25 years, and it should actively work towards making it
accessible to the target population - primarily, emerging
space experts from around the world.
The future is bright with possibilities that the new frontier
will become as fertile as the Internet for innovation and
creativity, which could propel human civilization out into
the Solar System permanently. Space technology, industry,
science and all endeavors will be more advanced 25 years
from now than they are today, probably even regardless
of geopolitical circumstances. We cannot really prepare
for specific yet nonexistent technologies and discoveries.
We can, however, envision what would the current and
the future stakeholders require from ISU.
Unlike 25 – 50 years ago, when it was an imperative to build
an army of rocket scientists and engineers to produce a
next stage development in the field, the way we currently
address knowledge, information and education (which is
dependent on our technological capabilities) transforms
the question about envisioning futuristic education
into: what kind of problem solving are we, or will we be
talking about. The key stakeholders of today like national
governments, agencies, private sector organizations and
institutions of higher education, entrepreneurs, and
activists all depend on the forward-looking institutions
like ISU to bring about the new ideas. This study will
chart how ISU will use international, interdisciplinary and
intercultural education to meet the challenges of the next
25 years.
Objectives
The primary objectives of this Team Project include:
• Envisioning the possible evolution of education and
networking and how they will affect institutions like
ISU in the coming decades.
• Creating descriptions on how ISU will address goals of
key stakeholders for the next 25 years.
• Proposing strategies that will ensure a continued
important role for ISU in opening the frontier of space
during this era of change.
• Realizing the positive educational experience in
learning how teamwork and problem solving are
achieved in an international, multicultural, and
multidisciplinary environment with time and resource
constraints.
• Producing a high quality report with practical and
actionable recommendations that will assist decision
makers and influence the future direction of the
International Space University.
Tasks
The tasks required to achieve these objectives include,
but are not limited to:
• Research predicted future space development,
disruptive technologies, cutting edge methods of
learning and any other pertinent areas important to
this subject.
• Review the current long-term goals of ISU as described
in the ISU Credo and the recent 2012 Academic
Council Strategic Roadmap.
• Make a list of the current and potential future
stakeholders in the space industry and associated
industries.
• Create a list of key challenges in space industry,
space science, and associated endeavors today
that are part of the long term agendas of the key
stakeholders; envision the same list for emerging and
future stakeholders; note that ISU itself is one of the
stakeholders.
• Envision what kind of problem solving skills and what
kind of knowledge will be necessary to address the
common traits of the challenges.
• Envision what kind of role ISU could play in providing
these specific skills and knowledge; how will they be
unique to the ISU characteristic culture; where ISU
actually could instruct other institutions or create
partnerships with them to provide these skills and
knowledge to them.
• Recommend new educational, technological, and
management approaches to keep ISU on the cutting
edge of the rapidly changing environment.
• Define a full 25 year strategy or strategies for ISU,
considering the potential results of intermediate
short-term strategies.
• Define a set of parameters that could track the
implementation of the strategy in short and long
term.
• Document findings and produce practical and
actionable recommendations that will assist decision
makers and influence the future direction of ISU.

Team Project - Monitoring Environmental Effects of Hydraulic Fracturing Using Remote
Sensing: Tracking Fracking
Introduction
The combination of increasing energy demand, interest
in expanding domestic supplies, and new hydraulic
fracturing technology has resulted in a drilling boom in
the United States. In many parts of the country, induced
hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ used for petroleum and
natural gas extraction has been extensively explored.
Shale gas production had an average growth rate of
48% from 2006 to 2010 and is projected to grow by 45%
from 2009 to 2035. With this expansion, it is becoming
common for drilling activities to occur in and around
metropolitan centers. Emissions from fracking operations
have the potential to cause a wide range of environmental
impacts. For example, fracking is associated with elevated
emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic
compounds, both of which lead to smog formation.
Fugitive methane emissions in shale gas production are
also a growing concern. Methane is a greenhouse gas
with climate change potential exceeding that of carbon
dioxide. Fracking operations have also been implicated
in triggering earthquakes, ground water contamination,
soil erosion, and spills due to pipe failures and loss of
containment ponds.
Using ground based monitoring to detect emissions
from fracking operations is a difficult task because of the
large number of well sites in remote locations dispersed
over large geographic areas; however, remote sensing of
atmospheric pollutants can provide key information on
the effects of emissions on air quality related to fracking
activities. Remote sensing from crewed and un-crewed
aircraft as well as space-borne instruments can provide
a mechanism to evaluate pollutant emissions over large
areas. For example, crewed aircraft flights using infrared
cameras have been used to identify significant emissions
from fracking operations in the Barnett Shale. In addition,
satellite measurements have been used to identify “hot
spots” associated with methane plumes.
Applications for satellite instruments are varied and cover a
broad range of research including epidemiological studies,
atmospheric modeling, and climate change; however,
the use of Satellite assets for identifying emissions from
fracking operations is a new frontier. Sensors on board
various satellites can estimate atmospheric levels of
key species resulting from fracking operations including
aerosol optical depth (AOD), which can serve as an
indicator for fine particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide
(NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3 ), and methane.
The focus of this team project will be to evaluate what is

currently being done to monitor and track environmental
changes that result from fracking operations and explore
how the application of space-based assets can be used to
provide data and information to yield more insight into
the overall environmental affects of fracking operations
using Ohio as a case study.
Additional Information on Space-Based
Remote Sensing Assets
Methane:
Sources of methane emissions are associated with
anaerobic processes and are characterized as either natural
or anthropogenic (Razavi et al., 2009). Until recently,
anthropogenic emissions accounted for approximately
60% of the global methane emissions. Methane, which is
a greenhouse gas, is released during fracking operations.
The AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) has a resolution
of 13.5 km at nadir and flies on-board the AQUA satellite.
The data retrieved from this instrument can be used to
quantify methane in the mid to lower troposphere.
Particulate Matter:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates
PM concentrations. Emissions from fracking operations
can result in a buildup of PM concentrations. The MODIS
(Moderate-Resolution
Imaging
Spectroradiometer)
instrument onboard the Terra and AQUA satellites
provides daily global measurements for aerosol optical
depth (AOD) (10 km x 10 km resolution) and has been
used as a source of data for predicting atmospheric
concentrations of particulates.
NO2, SO2 and O3:
Ozone, NO2 and SO2 are also criteria pollutants regulated
by EPA. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard
Aura can provide atmospheric measurements of NO2,
SO2, and O3. The instrument derives the vertical column
density (VCD) of gases by measuring UV-visible solar
radiation in nadir geometry. OMI has a ground resolution
of 13 km x 25 km.
Background
Hydraulic fracking is becoming a global phenomenon that
has raised environmental concerns resulting from the
rapid growth of the industry. For example, the state of
Ohio has experiencing a recent explosion in the number
of fracking operations with development of the Marcellus
and Utica shale deposits. This development has been
an economic boom for the State. These operations are
located throughout the eastern portion of the state and
have the potential to affect air quality throughout the
region. Significant emissions of greenhouse gases are
possible if proper operation and maintenance practices
are not followed. Other environmental impacts are also
likely. Only limited monitoring has been conducted in this
region to assess the environmental impacts associated
with these operations, which are mainly located in
remote areas. Ohio provides an excellent test case to
evaluate the feasibility of using remote sensing to identify
and monitor the environmental changes that result from
fracking operations.
Objectives
• Develop an understanding of the environmental issues
that result from the hydraulic fracturing process and
their potential effects on air and water quality.
• Assess the utility of space-based remote sensing
assets for identifying the chemical composition of
fracking emissions and tracking plume dispersion
patterns in the atmosphere.
• Using Ohio as a case study, propose a solution to
address the issue of locating, identifying, and tracking
fracking emissions and other environmental affects.
• Extrapolate the results of the Ohio case study to
propose fracking environmental affects identification
and tracking solutions for regional, national, and
potentially global applications.
• To have a positive educational experience in learning
how teamwork and problem solving are achieved in
an international, multicultural and multidisciplinary
environment with time and resource constraints.
Tasks
1. Research the issues surrounding the environmental
affects that result from fracking. This will include
developing an understanding of the industry and where
emissions from these operations are likely to occur.
2. Determine the potential coverage of the industry
in Ohio. This will include the current well sites being
prepared or under production and the potential future
sites to gauge the overall scope and geographic area this
industry will occupy.
3. Identify the key pollutants involved and propose remote
sensing solutions for identifying and monitoring these
emissions. This includes monitoring from both satellites
and aircraft.
4. Identify a cost effective method for implementing
a remote sensing solution for finding and tracking the
environmental affects resulting from fracking operations.
This could potentially be a tiered approach using a
combination of space-based assets, crewed, or un-crewed
aircraft.
5. Identify or explore how the data from these monitoring
techniques could be managed and useful information
extracted. For example, the following tools maybe
applicable to analyze the huge data sets obtained from
remote monitoring (“Big Data”):
a. Time series using spatial mapping can be completed
to assess the air quality changes in the region of
interest.
b. Spatial mapping can be performed using Geographic
Information System (GIS) spatial analyst capabilities,
which can provide an overview of the spatial distribution
of each pollutant within any particular region.
c. Change detection assessment can also be conducted
using Environment for Visualizing Images (ENVI), which
is a geospatial mapping tool.

In the mid-1980’s, three students at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology had the audacious idea of
creating a multidisciplinary University dedicated to the ,
international study of space. With the backing os such
notables as Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clarke, International
Space University was born in 1988. The two remaining
founders of ISU will spend the evening in a fun, interactive
dialog with SSP15 participants, recounting the creation of
ISU, it’s history, it’s stories, and their hope for its future.

For several decades, cosmonauts and astronauts have
participated in long-duration space expeditions. These
expeditions are associated with unique environmental
and psychological stressors that distinguish them from
short missions. These stressors can result in inter- and
intra-personal problems such as mood changes, lethargy,
diminished productivity, and ineffective leadership. In
the worst cases, the success of the mission may be
jeopardized.
We have learned valuable lessons from previous
expeditions that can be applied to contemporary crews
working in demanding conditions. This lecture will share
examples of behavioral experiences from long-duration
flights. The key non-technical skills (i.e., teamwork and
group living, self-care and self-management, leadership
and followership, and cross-cultural skills) required for
astronaut success during lengthy training periods and
long expeditions will be discussed.

Since its launch, the Hubble Space Telescope has become
one of the most extraordinary and beloved space science
missions, and has provided some of the most memorable
images of the cosmos. But the telescope was not an
immediate success - without the work performed by the
STS-61 crew, including astronomer and NASA astronaut
Jeffrey Hoffman, the Hubble could have been a scientific
disaster. Dr. Hoffman will recall his shuttle missions and
his experience as a space telescope “repair man”, and
how those repairs have led to the telescope becoming
one of the greatest science instruments ever built.

The International Astronaut panel is a longstanding
highlight of the SSP sessions. ISU participants and the
public will have the opportunity to interact with this
outstanding group of spaceflight veterans who represent
over 40 years of international spaceflight experience on
most every vehicle that has taken humans into space.
Their experiences vary from 3-day sorties to the surface of
the moon to year-long expeditions aboard space stations.
Jack Schmitt was the Lunar Module pilot of 1972’s Apollo
17 mission, and was the only scientist to walk on the
moon. Sergei Krikalev holds the record for the most
days in space by a human - 803 days, including 8 EVAs
- accumulated during his 5 missions aboard Soyuz, Mir,
the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station
in a flight career spanning from 1988 to 2005. Italian
astronaut Paolo Nespoli is flew on Space Shuttle Mission
STS-120 in 2007, and flew on Soyuz to the International
Space Station to serve as flight engineer for Expedition
26/27 during 2010-11. Canadian Astronaut Bob Thirsk
flew aboard Space Shuttle for Spacelab mission STS-78 in
1996, and flew to the ISS aboard Soyuz as flight engineer
for Expedition 20/21 in 2009.
panel will also discuss a number of science missions and
technology demonstrations both proposed and in work
at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center that are being
developed using streamlined requirements and processes
to expedite development and reduce costs, and a more
lean and agile process being used at NASA’s Johnson
Space Center to relax many requirements associated
with flying payloads on the ISS to expeditiously provide
experimental flight hardware. The panelists will explain
how systems are conceived and selected through cost and
technical evaluation processes, how class C/D payload
requirements are being tailored so support lean and agile
project execution, as well as how commercial companies
are integrating into and capitalizing on these processes
to optimize flight opportunities. Panel attendees are
invited to engage the panelists throughout the session
through posing questions and adding their comments and

astronauts, spaceflight, and the Apollo program. Rick
Armstrong and Andy Aldrin will describe their lives as they
experienced growing as children of an astronaut family,
their emotions watching their fathers walk on the moon,
the family experiences that followed the mission and how
it shaped their careers, and their thoughts on the future
of human space exploration. This intimate event will
allow ISU participants, staff and faculty a personal look

The 1961 decision by U.S. President John Kennedy to
send astronauts to the moon “before this decade is out”
remains the most dramatic choice in space history, and
on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took ‘one small step for
a man, one giant leap for mankind.’ The success of the
Apollo 11 mission satisfied the goal that had been set
by the US president, but also raised the question ‘What
do you do next, after landing on the Moon?’ It fell to
President Richard M. Nixon to answer this question, and
his response has changed the course of the US space
program ever since. ISU faculty member John Logsdon,
author of the 2010 book “John F. Kennedy and the Race
to the Moon” and the 2015 book “After Apollo?: Richard
Nixon and the American Space Program” will discuss the
reasons for Kennedy’s decision and the steps the young
president took to turn the decision into a successful
Apollo program, and will discuss the deliberations by
President Richard Nixon to end the Apollo program and
put the US space program on a different course.

The panel will address the perspectives for human
spaceflight in the mid- and long-term, i.e., next 20 years
and beyond. The next destinations for human missions are
currently envisioned to be the Moon and its environment
(cis-lunar space), Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and Mars
(including its moons). An international group called ISECG
(International Space Exploration Coordination Group) and
composed of most major space agencies around the globe
is actively working on establishing a global exploration
roadmap to those destinations. Panelists will provide a
personal perspective with respect to the future of human
spaceflight and will discuss challenges and opportunities
for collaboration in realizing their individual and common
space exploration goals.
Most panelists are or have been members of the ISECG.
They will present the inter-agency work preparing for
global human exploration. In particular, issues like the
architecture of human exploration missions beyond Low
Earth Orbit, the science and technology contents of such
missions as well as their outreach will be addressed. In
addition, concepts of human/robotic partnership for
exploration will be discussed.
Distinguished Lecture - The Human Side of
the Columbia Disaster

Within minutes of the disintegration of the Space Shuttle
Columbia during its return to Earth on February 1, 2003,
NASA personnel, flight surgeons, and teams of rescue and
recovery personnel were sent to search a broad area of
Texas to recover Columbia’s crew, and to uncover clues
about the thee shuttle’s break-up.
ISU faculty members Doug Hamilton and John Connolly
were two of the early responders. Each had different
missions: to support the families of the crew, determine
how to keep a crew on the International Space Station
given its main source of supplies was grounded,
recover the crew, and to recover what remained of the
vehicle and to determine he root cause of the accident.
Eventually, 22,000 individuals would take part in the
search and recovery, which covered almost 3,000 square
kilometers of the Texas wilderness. The loss of the seven
crewmembers and the dedication of so many search and
rescue personnel made the Columbia recovery a truly
human story.

the Study

As a colleague and friend of Gerry Soffen for many years,
and as an eminent member of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, Dr. Marov’s distinguished career span space
science research from its earliest missions to Venus, the
moon and Mars. Currently, Mikhail has been studying
the Chelyabinsk meteorite, which exploded over the
Ural mountains in February 2013, and has made some
fascinating observations about the meteorite and the age
of our solar system.

head of NASA talk about his vision for the future of his
Agency and the future of space throughout the world,
including planetary science, Earth science, and future

Chirag Parikh is the Director of Space Policy at the
National Security Council where he is responsible for the
formulation, coordination, and implementation of national
space policies and assists the President and National
Security Advisor in developing and advancing U.S. policies
and objectives. He is responsible for the Interagency
Policy Committee on Space coordinating U.S. national

security and foreign policy positions on space-related
issues. Prior to his time at the White House, he served
as the Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Science
and Technology at the National Intelligence Council (NIC),
Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI),
and as an intelligence analyst at the National Air and
Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). He holds an aerospace
engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati.
The Alumni Conference brings an additional number of
space professionals to the SSP to extend personal network
and knowledge. During each SSP, ISU alumni and host
partners organize an Alumni Conference with reunion
events open to all ISU alumni and participants. It is a
wonderful occasion to meet and share the experiences
with the alumni who have graduated from ISU over the
past 27 years. Participants are welcome to join the alumni
conference activities including the Career Fair, Poster
Session and Space Masquerade.

Robotics Competition
Launch Directors:

Will the rocket attain the correct altitude? Will the fragile
payload be returned safely? Will the vehicle fly straight
and stable? Teams will design and launch model rockets
that must meet a certain set of design criteria. They will
design the airframes, select the motors, use computers to
simulate the flight, and construct the rocket in a limited
period of time. It is a real-world challenge and the team
with the best performance will be recognized for their
hard work. This is an event open to the public and visitors
of all ages are welcome!

Thanks to LEGO kits, talent, and a lot of imagination, ISU
participants assisted by robotics experts will design and
build autonomous robots following precise specifications
to simulate planetary exploration. Robots will have to
avoid obstacles and collect the most “gemstones” in the
shortest given time. Their performance will be evaluated
by a group of international experts. Visitors of all ages
are welcome to share an educational and fun experience.

Most weeks there will be a cultural night, in which
participants from different countries will introduce their
national background to everyone by offering special
dishes, drinks, music, dancing, singing, and presentations.
SSP15 Social Media
ISU and Ohio University will use social media to allow
all stakeholders in the program to follow our activities
online. The social media team will actively use online
tools such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
Flickr to share information about the program. Through
these online channels we will highlight key activities, such
as special events, competitions, professional visits and
special lectures, and ISU SSP life in general.
All SSP15 social media will use hashtag #SSP15. With this
hashtag, anyone interested in the program can follow
the activities, on any channel. We encourage all staff and
participants to use the #SSP15 hashtag and to participate

SSP English Programs
Space English Access Course
During the week prior to the opening ceremony, an
intensive Space English Access Course (SEAC) is offered
for participants who want to practice and improve their
English communication skills. The SEAC provides 36 hours
of individual and group activities focused on speaking,
listening, reading, and writing English to prepare the
participants for full engagement in all aspects of the
SSP. In addition to offering a low-key environment
where participants learn and use the vocabulary and
Key Concepts of the space-related disciplines, the SEAC
includes orientation to the SSP program, schedules, and
resources.
The SEAC is developed and led by the Director of English
Programs, with the assistance of other teachers who have
similar training and experience in Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), English for Special
Purposes (ESP), and/or English for Academic Purposes
(EAP).
There is an additional fee for SEAC enrollment. For

English Classes
The weekly SSP schedule includes English Classes. During
these classes, the English Team will be available to help
participants having difficulty with understanding and
communicating in English.
Help will be provided in the following areas:
• Weeks 1-4: Core Lecture vocabulary and Key
Concepts; Writing and Presentation Workshops
• Week 4: Exam preparation
• Weeks 5-6: Preparation for writing and presenting
departmental assignments
• Weeks 7-8: Writing and editing support for the Team
Projects
Each class will be organized and facilitated by the Director
of English Programs, with assistance from SSP staff and
faculty.
In addition, individual participants - or groups of
participants with similar goals - are encouraged to

arrange tutorial times with the English teachers, who will
then post a weekly calendar for any tutorials scheduled
outside of the regular English classes.
Team Project (TP) Editing Support
The English Team includes SSP or MSc graduates for
on-site assistance. Online assistance is available from
ISU Faculty with extensive TP experience, as well as
experience in writing and editing documents for educators
and professionals in a variety of space-related disciplines.
Editing support includes:
• Week 6: TP Editing Workshop – for TP Editors only
• Weeks 7-9: Online and in-house editing support for
each TP; assistance to individuals/groups in preparing
for TP Final Presentations

books to support the lectures and the work on Team
Projects. With the web service, you will have access to
many online resources, such as bibliographic databases,
past Team Project reports, online books, electronic
journals, and various pdf documents.

institution OHIO to provide you full access to the vast
resources of the OHIO University Libraries. These
resources include scientific and technical journals,
databases, and specialized materials, most of which are

Accommodation
Bicycles
At the Adams Hall residence, SSP participants will stay in
private rooms, with each two rooms sharing a common
bathroom.
Bicycling is a fun and affordable form of transportation
in and around Athens. Cyclists must comply with driving
regulations. It is essential that you lock your bicycle
whenever you leave it unattended.

Each room comes equipped with a bed, linens, towels,
desk, chairs, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a microwave,
and wifi.
Participants may purchase bicycles locally (consult the
ISU Logistics Coordinator or Participant Liaison for a list
of stores), or they may rent bikes from a local bike shop,
Athens Bicycle, for $230 per unit for the duration of the
SSP15 program. This price includes a lock, a helmet, and
service at the shop for any adjustments that need to be
made to the bike (there will be extra charges for damaged
parts). The bikes will be brand-new Trek hybrid bicycles
with 21 gears.

Travel
Laundry services
Adams Hall has one laundry room on ground floor and
provides pay-as-you-go services.
Housekeeping
A weekly housekeeping service will be provided.
Keys
The OHIO ID is the electronic exterior door slide key at
Adams Hall. Replacement fee for the OHIO ID is $10 USD.
A metal room key is used as the interior room key at
Adams Hall. Replacement fee for the Adams Hall interior
room key is $89 USD.
Visitors
Due to the intensity of the program, participants are
strongly discouraged from accepting any visitors (e.g.,
spouses, significant others, friends, or family).
Should you wish to host a visitor, please be advised that
you are responsible for arranging their accommodations;
and ISU will not be able to provide assistance in booking
for your visitors.
Arrival at Airport
The nearest airport is CMH - Port Columbus International
Airport.
A welcome station will be setup at the airport to greet
you and arrange your transportation by bus to the SSP15
Campus for your registration.
Meal Plan
For all meals during the SSP, except during field trips, a
swipe of your OHIO ID card will be required at the Shively
Dining Hall. You will be entitled to a maximum of 19
meals per week, as for 1 breakfast and 1 lunch per day
from Monday to Friday, 1 dinner per day from Monday to
Sunday, 1 brunch on Saturdays, and 1 brunch on Sundays.
Departure Information
Everyone must check-out on departure day that will be
for all participants on Saturday, August 8th, 2015. All
rooms must be vacated by 12:00 noon. Accommodation
will NOT be available past this date and time.
