This is a handson course. Most of the class time will be spent working on labs. You are also expected to study the material outside of class. I am here to give direction, answer questions, and get you motivated in learning to use the Linux Operating System.
Red Hat Academy
You will need a Red Hat Network account in order to access the online materials and tests on the Red Hat Academy website. If you don't already have one, you can register at the Create Red Hat Login (https://www.redhat.com/wapps/ugc/register.html) web page. Select the personal Red Hat Login and fill in the information requested. If you have any questions, please let me know. Grading
This course is organized into eleven different sections. Each section has a Workbook, Pretest, Lab Test, and Test (except for the eleventh section which only has a Workbook). Homework is the Workbooks which prepare you for both the MultipleChoice Tests and the Lab Tests. The Lab Tests and MultipleChoice Tests are each worth 100 points, for a total of 2000 points. Your grade will be based on the percentage of your overall score as follows:
A = 93%100%
B = 80%82.9%
D+ = 67%69.9%
A = 90%92.9%
C+ = 77%79.9%
D = 63%66.9%
B+ = 87%89.9%
C = 73%76.9%
D = 60%62.9%
B = 83%86.9%
C = 70%72.9%
F or UW = 0%59.9%
Test Rules
Every Test (including Lab tests) will be given through Red Hat Academy. Personal notes may be used during a Test but sharing notes and talking among other students while taking a Test will not be permitted. Please share notes and talk with each other before the Test begins. Before each Test I will try to review and answer as many questions as I can while still allowing ample time to finish the exam. Final Exam
This class is intended to prepare you for the next course: IS 320 Red Hat Linux System Administration. The better you learn the material in this class, the more prepared you will be for taking the RHCT certification exam at the end of IS320. The final exam will be on Wednesday, December 12 between 11:00am and 2:00pm and will consist of taking or retaking Tests you may not have done very well on to improve your overall grade in the class.
Late Work/Make Up Exams
The Workbook schedule is there to help you prepare for the tests. If you fall behind in the Workbooks, it will show on your Test and Lab Test scores. Be sure to keep up. Tests and Lab tests are given on specific days. Make sure you attend class on those days. If, for reasons beyond your control (some act of nature, for example), you happen to miss a Test day, don't think all is lost and give up. You should be able to take the missed Test during the Final Exam time (so don't miss too many).
Preventing Sexual Harassment
Title IX of the education amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination against any participant in an educational program or activity that receives federal funds, including Federal loans and grants. Title IX also covers studenttostudent sexual harassment. If you encounter unlawful sexual harassment or genderbased discrimination, please contact the Human Resource Service at 7808875 (24 hours).
Students with Disabilities
Brigham Young University Hawaii is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere, which reasonably accommodates qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability that may impair your ability to complete this course successfully, please contact the Students with Special Needs counselor Leilani Auna at 2933518. Reasonable academic accommodations are reviewed for all students who have qualified documented disabilities. If you need assistance or if you feel you have been unlawfully discriminated against on the basis of disability, you may seek resolution through established grievance policy and procedures. You should contact the Human Resource Services at 7808875.
Schedule
Caution, these dates are tentative and subject to change. Make sure your attendance is high so that you'll know if and when any changes occur. Also, get to know your classmates, ask for phone numbers, find a few other students who you can ask what happened when you didn't show up.
