This week we welcome four new students to our school Ellen and Vendela W and Andrea and Artem K.
Next week we will celebrate Education Week at Manly Village
Public School. Education Week is a major event on the NSW
public schools calendar.
2015's theme is 'Celebrating Local Heroes'. The celebrations
will take place on Thursday 30 July 2015. A selection of performance items will showcase the wonderful experiences
available for students at this school. A special guest ‘local
hero’ has been invited to address the students at 9.15am.
Please find a detailed timetable of the day’s activities within
this newsletter.
Classrooms will be opened for parents to visit with their children from 7.30am - 9.25am. This is a great opportunity for
families to view and encourage the work that their child has
been doing in class.
Parents are also invited to stay for the performances in the
hall and for morning tea with their children. Morning tea will be
provided by the canteen team.
Since beginning my new role as principal at MVPS, I am continually commenting on the dedication and commitment of the
teachers and the wonderful children and families at this
school, which is worth celebrating!
I look forward to celebrating public school education with everyone next week.

PLASTIC FREE JULY
The challenge is quite simple...attempt to refuse
single-use plastic during July.
Plastic Free July aims to
raise awareness of the
amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and
challenges people to do
something about it. You can
sign up for a day, a week or
the whole month and try to
refuse ALL single-use plastic or try the TOP 4:
plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cups
and straws.
Join thousands of people from over 70 countries
saying NO to single-use plastic this July.
SUPERHERO DAY
We will be holding our annual
Superhero Day for Bear Cottage
Thursday 23rd July.
Students are invited to dress up
as their favourite Superhero on the day and to
bring along a donation to Bear Cottage. Bear Cottage is a hospice for children suffering from a
number of life-limiting conditions.
Students are encouraged to earn some money
doing household chores to help someone less fortunate than themselves. We will look forward to
the usual amazing response from families at our
school.

‘Artist in Residence’ - 6/5J’s Watercolour Experience at Manly Village with Mrs Anne Scott!
6/5J was immersed in the world of watercolour in Week 10 last term. Anne Scott, a former student of
Manly Village and retired teacher; now artist, took 6/5J on a fascinating journey. Students first ventured to
the playground to find ‘the right stick’ to create outlines for their work in ink. Discussion about techniques
and playing around with watercolour soon followed.
Anne also shared her story with 6/5J students. Seven years ago, she had a benign tumour removed from
her brain. Her road to recovery was long and she has had to relearn many things. Anne lost all fine motor
on her right side, presenting major challenges for a right hander. Perseverance and determination have
seen her emerge as a beautiful artist using her left hand, and she certainly hasn’t lost her touch in the
classroom!
Our day with Anne Scott was inspirational and we thank her for giving of her time to work with our students. Please take a trip to the ‘top floor’ to see the stunning artworks created by 6/5J (on display outside
the classroom). Congratulations 6/5J!

Good luck to our Senior Girls Soccer team playing their second round of the NSW PSSA State Knockout Competition against Avalon on Thursday (replayed from a wet weather cancellation last Thursday). Avalon have won this
competition for the past 2 years and will be a tough match. However, we have a committed team of amazing girls
who have assured me they can take them on. Good luck girls.
Have a great week of sport everyone.
