2012 Report to the Community www.edalliance.org 212-780-2300 The Educational Alliance is a community-based organization that changes lives. Our wide range of programs includes early childhood and after school programs, an Art School, health & wellness programs, summer camps, senior centers, a program for mentally ill and homeless Jewish adults, drug treatment, counseling, the 14th Street Y and our brand new Manny Cantor Center which will open in Fall 2013. We are a Jewish organization, serving people of diverse ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds who live, work and learn in downtown Manhattan. In 2012, we helped more than 50,000 New Yorkers in our 41 programs at 22 locations. www.edalliance.org To make a contribution or volunteer, call our development office at 646.395.4086. A Message from our Chairman and our President Dear Friends, As The Educational Alliance approaches the end of its first 125 years, we are working hard to ensure that we will be able to continue serving everyone in our diverse community – babies, children, teens, adults, and seniors – for the next 125. To that end, we have been renovating our flagship building at 197 East Broadway and making changes to strengthen all of our nearly 40 programs. When 197 East Broadway reopens this coming fall as the Manny Cantor Center, the Lower East Side will gain a dynamic modern community center that will welcome people of all ages and backgrounds with light-filled early childhood classrooms, a state-of-the art fitness center, spacious art studios, and a beautiful, glass-walled community space on the new top floor for public events. Our commitment to the diversity of the Lower East Side will continue to be reflected in the facility’s programming: Head Start classrooms will sit alongside our private Early Childhood classrooms; the Whittaker Center for older adults will create community for seniors of all backgrounds and abilities; our fitness center will be utilized by neighborhood residents of all races, income levels, and ages. The Educational Alliance Art School will continue to forge connections between students and master teachers through the study and mastery of fine arts. Community and cultural programming will invite deep conversation and civic engagement. The Manny Cantor Center will be a living laboratory for the universal Jewish values of inclusion, diversity, and community. Programmatically, we are strengthening our focus on transforming our community through education, striving to make a college degree achievable for every person who walks through our doors. Through our College Access and Success Program, which takes a two generation approach, helping both parents and their preschool-age children prepare for academic success, and our College Prep program for teens, we are creating pathways to opportunity by showing it is possible to overcome the barriers to a college education. Through these programs, we hope to help families break the cycle of poverty for good. Meanwhile, we are working to improve the quality of life for two particularly vulnerable populations: older adults and those struggling with addiction. Our Center for Balanced Living program continues to grow, changing the way seniors – and especially baby boomers – think about aging. We are renovating our senior housing, upgrading kitchens and bathrooms in the Podell Apartments so that our resident older adults can live more comfortably in their homes. And we look forward to completing the construction of our new facility on Avenue D, which will allow us to strengthen and expand our drug treatment program. Finally, at the 14th Street Y, our community theme EAT has led us to sustainable snacks in all programs for kids and families, another season of a thriving CSA, building-wide composting underwritten by local philanthropic support, and a community conversation facilitated by our LABA team, senior program staff and 14th Street Y Preschool teachers about themes of humility as taught by the tradition of eating matzah instead of bread at Passover. In closing, we are deeply grateful to all of our financial supporters, who are listed in the Roll of Honor at the end of this report, and in particular for the ongoing and vital dedication, guidance and generosity of the Educational Alliance’s Board of Trustees. We would like to particularly acknowledge and welcome four trustees who joined our Board in FY 2012 - Mara Engel Wedeck, Adam Sokoloff, Lauren Wachtler, and Howard Zimmerman – and to thank those Trustees who stepped down this year - Edgar Eisner, Howard Ganek, and Deirdre Guice – for their years of service. Thank you all for your generosity, without which our work would not be possible. We look forward to partnering with you for years to come, as we continue to work to open doors of opportunity for every member of our community. Warmly, Russell Makowsky Chairman, Board of Directors Robin Bernstein President & CEO 3 Children and Families The Educational Alliance’s leadership in early childhood is historic. We were chosen to run one of the nation’s first pilot programs of Head Start in 1965 and Early Head Start in 1995. Today, our rapidly growing high quality programs include 2 Jewish preschools, a parenting center, child care, Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Fast Facts: • 2,250 children gained strong foundations to become successful and enthusiastic readers and learners in our early childhood programs last year. • Children in our Jewish preschool and older adults in our senior centers participated together in a wide range of intergenerational activities. It’s also one of the poorest, with some of the city’s lowest high school graduation rates. Our 7 Educational Alliance Boys & Girls Clubs ensure that neighborhood children are safe and supervised after school and that they get academic help, as well as sports and fitness and arts education. Fast Facts: • 1,364 youth are enrolled in our after school, arts, and sports programs. • 100% of the high school seniors who have completed our College Prep program have been accepted to college! Taking a holistic approach to our work, we provide meals, innovative health and wellness programs, and a broad range of stimulating educational, social, recreational and artistic activities. Fast Facts: • 17,520 kosher meals were served last year at Project ORE, our program for homeless or isolated Jewish older adults. • 3,845 seniors accessed subsidized housing, meals, classes, and community through our programs. Our modern fitness center, locker rooms and lobby attract an eclectic and rapidly growing cross-section of teens, adults, families and seniors. Programs like the Parenting, Family & Early Childhood Center, LABA, and greening and sustainability initiatives are supporting and building our East Village community. Fast Fact: • Over 100 families participated in the 14th Street Y’s New Family Fitness Initiatives to promote health & wellness. By incorporating visionary design and impressive space planning, the Manny Cantor Center will allow us to enhance the facilities for all of our existing programs; expand the number of early childhood classrooms; and launch new programs and services like a comprehensive health & wellness center and a beautiful community space to host neighborhood arts & culture events. The new community center will have three elevators and a kosher kitchen. Its outmoded systems will be entirely replaced with a modern and highly energy-efficient infrastructure. Most importantly, the new building will bring together people of all racial, religious and economic backgrounds to build community and create more opportunities for everyone. Volunteers - individuals, families, teens, as well as groups from corporations, synagogues, churches and schools, are vital to the success of the Educational Alliance. They engage in one time and ongoing activities, depending on their availability. Volunteers are needed in all of our programs, for activities including reading to children, serving meals to our older adults and mentoring our college-bound teens. Fast Fact: • Over 1,500 volunteers contributed 26,000 hours of their time to benefit the programs of the Educational Alliance. A teen volunteer wrote the following, “When you see a child master the ABCs, try a new food or come out of his shell, you are witnessing something special. This realization is what keeps me and other volunteers coming back to the Educational Alliance.“ For more information or to donate: 646-395-4086 or www.edaliance.org 9 THE EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE, INC. & AFFILIATES SUMMARY STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 2012 PUBLIC SUPPORT AND REVENUE $ in 000’s Fees and grants from governmental agencies 15,037 Program Service Fees 11,000 Contributions/Foundations* 13,765 UJA-Federation of New York 1,487 Annual Gala 842 Investment Income 69 Other Income 3,044 Total Public Support, Grants & Revenue $45,244 EXPENSES Program Services Children and Family Services Social Services Older Adult Services Jewish Community Center Services Total Program Expenses $9,658 6,146 3,841 10,290 $29,935 Supporting Services Management and general Fundraising Total Supporting Services $6,105 1,098 $7,203 Total Expenses $37,138 RESULT FROM OPERATIONS ENDING NET ASSETS: ANNUAL GALA 2% UJA- FEDERATION OF NY 3% INVESTMENT OTHER INCOME INCOME 0% 7% CONTRIBUTIONS/ FOUNDATIONS 31% * This includes contributions to the agency’s annual campaign for operating support, as well as to its capital campaign for the Manny Cantor Center, which will open in Fall 2013.
