AP Biology Summer Work
2013-2014
Welcome to AP Biology for the 2013-2014 school year! This is a very intensive
course that you can possibly earn college credit for after taking the AP Biology
Exam in May. This summer is going to be a little different as far as summer
work because you will not have access to an AP Biology book. The books have to
be replaced every 10 years as to stay current with the College Board Standards
and our time is now.
That being said, you need to use your resources. Use the power points to
complete your chapter packets (they are voiced over so they have the
information you need). Use Google – it’s okay. When you return in the fall,
hopefully, we will have brand new books for you to use for this course.
Make sure you work a little at a time throughout the summer so you are not
trying to cram all of it in when you get back to school in the fall and have other
classes you will be completing.
Have a great summer and email me (hhamrick@jackson.k12.ga.us) if you have any
questions!
Looking forward to next year, Mrs. Hamrick!

This unit will include the following Chapters:
Chapter 50: Introduction to Ecology
Chapter 51: Behavioral Ecology
Chapter 52: Population Ecology
Chapter 53: Community Ecology
Chapter 54: Ecosystems
Chapter 55: Conservation Biology
*Ecology Assignments –
1. Complete Chapter Packets Chapters 50-54
a. Completing the Chapter Packets is an active form of reading and you will
retain the information better this way. Do it as you read it.
b. Chapter 55 does not have a chapter packet
2. Complete the Biome Chart Worksheet
a. You can print this out or complete it on the computer. Just be ready to
turn it in when school starts.
3. Complete the Biogeochemical Cycles Worksheet
a. You can print this out or complete it on the computer. Just be ready to
turn it in when school starts.
4. Listen to the powerpoints and take notes.
a. The powerpoints have my audio over them. So, it will be like I am
teaching you without actually being there.
b. Print out the powerpoint slides as “Handouts” with 6 slides per page (to
save paper) and take notes on those! This way, you have the pictures and
what’s written already and do not have to write as much.
c. You might also want to highlight important things! This is another active
reading strategy.
* Due Date: Friday, August 16, 2013!
1. All of this stuff is due to me no later than August 16th!
2. What you physically have to turn in to me:

It is important to stay EXTREMELY organized during this class.
a. Keep a folder with all your information in it.
b. Make sure the folder is for AP Bio ONLY!
c. Keep outlines and notes in separate parts of the binder.
Keep a calendar with Due Dates on it.
a. Either buy an agenda from the store or use a calendar on your phone or online.
b. This will help you make sure that you are keeping track and that you do not get
behind.
Set up a schedule of when you are going to do stuff.
a. If you know you will be out of town for two weeks this summer, plan around that
and do not set it up so you have to do the work then.
b. DO NOT WAIT until the week before school starts back to do your work! Pace
yourself throughout the summer. There are tentative due dates for you to abide
by so you do not get too far behind.
This summer work is an easy as long as you do it. If you do not do it, your grade will
start out low and be hard to build back up!
AP Biology Study Guide books or AP Biology Flash-cards would be very helpful! You can
get them from used bookstores, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, etc
