skit which involved everyone in the excitement of kicking off the Annual Food Drive for Metropolitan Ministries.
Dance teacher Ms. Di Carlo showcased student dancers from the multi-age All Stars who gave their time to
rehearse a dance choreographed by fourth grader Amanda Lather.
Congratulations to Tony and Dina Muniz, parents of “Headmaster Ava” for winning this opportunity at the February 2014
Big Event. This year’s Big Event is February 21, 2015!
YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SERVE AND HELP THE CORBETT PREP STUDENT
COUNCIL REACH ITS GOAL OF COLLECTING 1,500 POUNDS OF FOOD FOR
METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES’ ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE IS SATURDAY!
We have extended the annual food drive collection to Saturday, November 22. Please know that in order to meet our
goal to support the Food Drive, we are encouraging everyone to bring a can or non-perishable food item to the Fall
Festival and/or Fun Run on…Saturday. So far, this week we have collected hundreds of pounds of food for our greater
community! FRIDAY, our food focus of the day is on collecting cans of fruit and yams; however, we will gladly accept
any and all last minute canned or boxed items to help the student council reach its huge goal!! Thank you for all of your
support this week!!! The Middle School Student Council states that “we owe our success to all because of our awesome
Corbett Prep community!!”
EARLY PRIMARY: Standing ovation:
Over the last two weeks, the Pre-K4 and K students were introduced
to a variety of fictional and non-fiction literature, including legends, to help them learn about the past and how storytelling
has changed and developed throughout history. Our students brought the story of Thanksgiving to life with our
reenactment of “The Living Thanksgiving”. After sailing on the Mayflower, the students began the chores of a Pilgrim
which include candle making, thatching a roof, washing clothes, making butter, woodworking, planting and harvesting.
They were fortunate that Squanto came to teach them how to use fish as fertilizer for our crops, and they, in turn, showed
him how to build shelter, make candles, and weave cloth. On Monday, our Pilgrims celebrated all of their hard work with
a feast, complete with the vegetables they “harvested” from their winter crop. Teachers, parents and students created lifetime memories from this perfectly planned unit and it’s stellar implementation. Another example of learning at its best…
LEARNING HITS THE ROAD AS STUDENTS GET THE
OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE WHAT THEY LEARN:
FIFTH GRADE in SAVANNAH, GEORGIA and CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA:
Over 90
Fifth Grade students, parents and teachers left bright and early Wednesday morning and will return Friday night with lots
of great stories! It’s an annual tradition to culminate their American History unit right in the spot where so much history
has taken place. Early reports from the trip are how exciting it is to be there!
BREAKING NEWS:
The drama class for 8th grade culminated their study of SHAKESPEARE on stage this morning
with an unbelievable performance of vignettes from classic Shakespeare. They honored his past works and showed how
they could also apply to today’s modern world. The performance was extraordinary! Read all about it in next week’s
Heads’ Letter! Congratulations to the eighth grade and to directors Emilia Sargent and Seth Travaglino!!!

Corbett Prep Pilgrims Immerse Themselves in the Lives of Early Settlers
and the First Thanksgiving
Early Primary Pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower for the
first part of their journey through history during the
interactive social studies unit “A Living Thanksgiving.”
Students learned about lives of early American settlers
as they made candles, washed clothes, planted crops
and performed other tasks.
Nov. 20, 2014 (TAMPA, Fla.) – The Early Primary Pilgrims prepared to board the Mayflower, clutching
tiny pouches containing their fare for the voyage, and debated what would happen if they lost their
pennies.
Would they have to swim to the New World? Stay at home? But then one student came up with a
thoroughly modern solution — they could download an app to pay the fee on their smartphones.
The world PreK4 and Kindergarten students experience today is far different from the one that children
knew in 1620. But students at Corbett Preparatory School of IDS have gained a better understanding of
history after immersing themselves in the interactive social studies and science unit “A Living
Thanksgiving.”
The lessons, spread over several days in November, bring the Thanksgiving story to life and are part of
a beloved tradition for students in Corbett Prep’s Early Primary Division. The experience has evolved to
incorporate an inquiry program that takes students on a journey through traditions and storytelling.
Teachers read and introduce students to a variety of fiction and nonfiction, including legends, to help
them learn about the past and how storytelling has changed and developed throughout history.
“Living Thanksgiving” is an interactive unit that challenges students in multiple ways and appeals to a
variety of intelligences. Books about Pilgrim life connect to verbal-linguistic intelligences, while time
outdoors working with wood, planting gardens, thatching roofs and washing clothes stimulate naturalist
and kinesthetic intelligences. Teachers also ask open-ended questions to prompt students to “see,
think and wonder” and encourage students to contrast their lifestyle with the Pilgrims.
Please turn over for the rest of the article.
Corbett Prep Pilgrims Immerse Themselves in the Lives of Early Settlers and the First Thanksgiving
The story is continued here.
“Do you think the life of a Pilgrim was easy?”
PreK4 teacher Teresa Krig asked her class.
Students would discover during their studies
how hard Pilgrims of all ages worked.
Corbett Prep students started their educational
journey through the 17th century by signing the
ship’s log and climbing aboard the Mayflower,
permanently docked near their classrooms.
“We sailed 66 days,” said kindergartner Eric
Walker Jr.
The trip was rough, students said, taking on
their roles with enthusiasm. They even had to
leave their toys in England.
Squanto visited the PreK4 and Kindergarten Pilgrims with
advice on how to use fish as fertilizer in their crops.
Once they landed in Massachusetts, they began the work of setting up a community and sustaining
themselves. Dressed in vests, aprons and bonnets, students made candles for light, assembled
scrubbers to clean vegetables and tied pine needles together for brooms. They stuffed pillowcases for
their beds, wove cloth and made butter. The famous Native American Squanto even surprised the
young Pilgrims with a visit and taught them how to use
fish as fertilizer, and the Early Primary Pilgrims
excitedly showed him what they had accomplished
since their arrival.
Pilgrims enjoyed the results of their hard work with
a feast that featured vegetables they had harvested
and cleaned.
Students, teachers and parent volunteers celebrated
their hard work with a feast featuring vegetables
“harvested” from their winter crop as well as turkey and
pumpkin pie. While the original Pilgrims endured many
struggles, the Corbett Prep Pilgrims enjoyed their time
in Plymouth.
“This is an awesome Pilgrimland,” PreK4 student
Aydan Shah said as he washed clothes one morning.
Corbett Prep teachers believe creating memorable experiences enables students to make real-life
connections to curriculum-based studies. Thanksgiving now will hold new meaning and significance to
the students who had the chance this year to learn about it by living it.
Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School - Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited,
nonsectarian private school in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood. The school serves over 500 students from pre-kindergarten
