INTRODUCTION
a student needs to be fully aware of their
interests, skills, attributes and capabilities
to be able to convey this on paper (job
application documents) and in person
(networking/interviewing/promotion).
The Curtin Careers Centre, working
closely with employers and the university
community, sources, develops and
delivers career development programs and
resources. The purpose of these professional
and personal development learning
opportunities is to facilitate successful
career transitions – especially study to
employment and/or further study – and
to enhance students’ ability to develop
lifelong skills in managing their careers.
The Careers Centre also provides accurate,
current authoritative labour market and
graduate recruitment information focusing
on society’s needs and aspirations.
The Careers Centre team has written a
series of occupation career booklets to
enable tertiary students to consider their
chosen field in more depth including
information on the current labour market,
associated professional associations,
pertinent job seeking avenues and samples
of relevant and related positions.
The purpose of this occupational booklet is,
therefore, twofold. It will assist students to
develop knowledge of trends in employment
and current opportunities and to identify
existing skills and attributes and the skills/
attributes required to successfully pursue a
career in this field.
A student may not be aware that whilst
using this resource that they are involved
in career development learning (CDL). CDL
assists students to develop Self Awareness,
to Identify Opportunities, to learn how to
Make Decisions and to Manage Transition
from university and incorporate lifelong
learning. Career Development Learning
involves Curtin students working with
the Curtin Careers Centre towards the
attainment of required skills and knowledge
at a tertiary level to successfully manage
the changing contexts of life; incorporating:
Whilst students are actively seeking
information about a particular field they
need also be aware of recruitment and
selection methods and the need to develop
strategies to be competitive in their field
at graduate entry level. Self -assessment is
an essential component of job seeking i.e.

A chosen career in
public relations
Job Outlook, an Australian government
initiative notes that the Public Relations
profession ‘may include associated
occupations with varying tasks’ (Job
Outlook, n.d.). They list some of the dayto-day activities of a Public Relations
professional to include:
According to James (2006, 2) ‘PR work
centres on managing communication and
public perception about organisations,
people, products or specific issues.’ With
communications technology constantly
updating; moving from traditional
communication channels to internet
communications, targeted audiences
becoming more complex, organisations
becoming more accountable and socially
responsible, PR professionals roles are also
adapting. Employment opportunities are
merging even further into marketing and
advertising. The Public Relations Institute of
Australia (PRIA), the national industry body
for PR and communications professionals
states that:
“A genuine public relations practitioner
• Planning and organising publicity
campaigns and communication strategies
• Advising executives on the public relations
implications of their policies, programs and
practices
• Preparing and controlling the issue of
news and press releases
• Undertaking and commissioning public
opinion research, analysing the findings and
planning public relations and promotional
campaigns
is usually tertiary qualified in public relations
or a related field, highly skilled and versatile,
with a good knowledge of fields like professional
writing and editing, strategic planning, and
creative thinking processes on a career path
increasingly respected for its contribution to
other aspects of business, government and organisational development”
• Organising special events, seminars,
entertainment, competitions and social
functions to promote goodwill and
favourable publicity
They go onto state that current definitions
of public relations have three key words in
common: communication, relationships
and reputation (Public Relations Institute of
Australia, n.d.).
• Representing organisations and arranging
executive interviews with publicity media
PR students and graduates; aside from
demonstrating excellent communications
skills (oral, written and interpersonal), will
also demonstrate initiative, be organised,
diplomatic and possess strong listening and
problem solving skills. An interest in current
affairs would be a given. PR is also a field
that can demand commitment outside of
the normal working hours, hard work and
tenacity.
• Commissioning and obtaining
photographs and other illustrative material
• Attending business, social and other
functions to promote the organisation
• Selecting, appraising and revising
material submitted by publicity writers,
Photographers, Illustrators and others to
create favourable publicity

Recent Graduates may start their job

As a Curtin University student you will be

GAUGING SALARIES
It is important for students and graduates
to keep an eye on the labour market for
trends in employment.
Do you know your worth? As students begin
to apply job search strategies they may
come across Public Relations positions
for the private sector with no salary
information attached to the advertisement.
An interview question may then arise asking
what is believed to be a suitable salary scale
for the position.
The Australian Government funds and
operates the Australian JobSearch website
and produces Job Outlook ‘which includes
information on workforce and occupational
characteristics including: future growth
prospects, average weekly earnings,
the skills needed to perform work tasks
and typical work activities’ (Australian
JobSearch n.d.). Undertake a search on

Students and graduates with little or no PR
experience beyond their discipline specific
knowledge would generally be suitable for
PGSA Level 2/3 positions. It is also a good
idea to look at more senior positions to view
the requirements and for future reference
but also be realistic; if only the more senior
level positions are selected it is unlikely that
a Public Relations graduate would have the
background to be competitive.

REVIEW JOB REQUIREMENTS
Review job advertisements and job
requirements. Pay particular attention
to the job description form (JDF) or job
requirements and to the selection criteria.
NOTE: Selection criteria may be included
in a JDF as for government jobs or may
be ‘hidden’ in the advertisement. If no set
selection criteria are asked to be addressed,
target your letter to the position. Don’t
just limit yourself to reviewing entry level
or graduate positions, look at the variety
of positions in your field at various levels
and view the requirements. This will let you
discover what will be expected of you at
higher levels and the type of experience that
you will hope to gain at earlier stages in
your career. Consider lifelong learning and
developing your career.
RECRUITMENT AGENCIES
When conducting a job search via job search
engines such as Seek.com you may see
a pattern to the agencies most recruiting
in the marketing field. Register with these
agencies or contact city branches directly.

what type of graduate and graduate skills/

prospective candidates. If a student believes

important for a student prior to graduation
to increase their employability prospects.

performing well academically, can also
demonstrate an interest in their chosen field
beyond their studies including:
Employment in any role to support studies,
such as:
• Administrative work – anything that
involves working in a professional setting
• Customer relations – retail, hospitality and
service roles where you are demonstrating
your ability to communicate with others.
Work experience around a particular field
of study. Students need to be proactive in
seeking out work experience placements
(either paid or unpaid) or related

who might benefit from some assistance
during busy times.

Involvement with university groups including marketing the group to other

even if the work is unrelated to your degree
it demonstrates you ability to offer your
